Take advantage of the gentle, even terrain of the Low Countries as you travel along pastoral canals, passing storybook Flemish villages, fortified towns, and sophisticated lock systems. Visit Bruges, Ghent, and Antwerp to discover the outstanding art, architecture, and gastronomy of the region. Explore Kinderdijk, a UNESCO-listed series of iconic windmills,and the world-renowned cheese market in Gouda. Tour the beautifully restored rooms and gardens of the 17th-century Het Loo Palace, former summer residence of the Dutch royal family. Other highlights include a visit to a silversmith s workshop in Schoonhoven. Joining this voyage will be Jim Salzman, currently a visiting professor at Harvard University and the Donald Bren Distinguished Professor of Environmental Law with joint appointments at UCLA Law School and the University of California, Santa Barbara, School of Environment. Belgium & Holland by Barge Bruges to Amsterdam Aboard Magnifique II September 8 16, 2017 TUESDAY, SEPTEMBER 12: SINT-AMANDS / ANTWERP, BELGIUM From Sint-Amands, enjoy magnificent scenery this morning as we travel by bike, barge, or motorcoach along the winding Scheldt. In Antwerp, experience Belgium s celebrated beer culture on a tour of the recently reopened Antwerp City Brewery. Its iconic De Koninck brews have been made here for more than 180 years, with each variety served in its own special glass. Afterwards, explore Antwerp s Zurenborg neighborhood, home to countless Art Nouveau homes. Bruges FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 8: U.S. DEPARTURE Depart the U.S. on an overnight flight to Brussels. SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 9: BRUSSELS / BRUGES, BELGIUM Arrive in Brussels and transfer to Bruges. Enjoy some leisure time in this UNESCO-listed city brimming with sublime architecture and art. You may wish to view Michelangelo s Madonna & Child in the Church of Our Lady or the superb collection of Hans Memling paintings in the Hospital of St. John. Pending confirmation, the president of the College of Europe will meet with the group, and the Mayor of Bruges will greet us at the town hall. Transfer to Magnifique II and settle into your cabin. Tonight the captain hosts a welcome dinner. D SUNDAY, SEPTEMBER 10: BRUGES / GHENT, BELGIUM Cruise or cycle past canals and small villages to Ghent. Pause to watch the operation of the Eye, Belgium s giant lock system, and picnic alongside the River Lys. A guided walk through the center of Ghent will reveal the fascinating history of this lively city, which in the Middle Ages was one of the largest and wealthiest cities in Europe. WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 13: ANTWERP / DORDRECHT, THE NETHERLANDS Discover Antwerp s newly renovated Central Station one of the most beautiful in Europe and restored Harbour House, designed by Zaha Hadid. Alternatively, relax aboard Magnifique II as she crosses to the Netherlands through the Kreekrak lock system to Tholen, a former fishing village. You may choose to follow the path along the impressive Volkerak lock system and past Willemstad, whose historic old town is still surrounded by star-shaped fortifications. Magnifique II docks overnight in Dordrecht, one of the Netherlands oldest cities. THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 14: DORDRECHT / VIANEN, THE NETHERLANDS Drive to the Gouda cheese market for tastings and talks with local producers. You may wish to bike through the village of Kinderdijk, recognized by UNESCO for its 19 monumental windmills. Lunch is at a neighborhood farm featuring Dutch specialties. Visit Schoonhoven, a center for silversmiths since the 17th century, where there will be an opportunity to shop and to visit a local craftsman. Follow the Lek River to Vianen, once home to American Revolutionary hero, the Marquis de Lafayette. MONDAY, SEPTEMBER 11: GHENT / SINT-AMANDS, BELGIUM Follow the Scheldt River to Dendermonde, a small city known for its magnificent Flemish buildings. Continue your exploration via bicycle, or enjoy free time in Dendermonde, perhaps to visit the Church of Our Lady, home to two Van Dyck paintings and a 12th-century baptismal font of Tournai stone. FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 15: VIANEN / AMSTERDAM, THE NETHERLANDS From Vianen drive to Het Loo Palace to view the Dutch royal family s works of art and wander the Baroque gardens. Continue to Het Gooi, a collection of chic villages renowned for their striking contemporary architecture. Pending confirmation, we will be a guest in one of the Het Gooi homes.
