Sustainable Tourism in Europe As the third largest socio-economic activity in the EU, tourism is important for growth and employment. Despite the depth of the economic crisis, the tourist industry in the EU has proved resilient with numbers of tourist trips remaining high.

Costal and marine Tourism in Europe (a) Coastal and maritime tourism has been identified as one of the five Blue Growth priority areas that could deliver sustainable growth and jobs and contribute to the emergence of European and Mediterranean countries from the economic crisis. The coastal tourism industry is by far the largest employer in the blue economy. Costal & marine Tourism in EU: funding opportunities The European Structural and Investment Funds can co-finance sustainable tourism investments linked to ICT, entrepreneurship, SME s competitiveness, energy efficiency, employment and labour mobility, exchange of good practices, transnational networks The Creative Europe programme supports synergies between cultural and nature tourism, including coastal and maritime heritage. The Erasmus+ programme helps in terms of employability, new sector curricula and innovative forms of vocational teaching and training. The LIFE+ programme can co-finance innovative projects affecting coastal and maritime tourism and resource efficiency. The European Investment Bank provides SMEs with financing for investments in tourism and/or in convergence regions. The COSME framework programme aims to enhance SME competitiveness, increase tourism demand, diversify offer and products, and enhance quality, sustainability, accessibility, skills and innovation. Horizon 2020 is the financial instrument for the EU s research and innovation strategy, with Blue Growth as one of its focus areas.

The BLUEMED initiative RESEARCH AND INNOVATION INITIATIVE FOR BLUE JOBS AND GROWTH IN THE MEDITERRANEAN AREA (THE BLUEMED INITIATIVE)

The BLUEMED initiative The BLUEMED Initiative fosters integration of knowledge and efforts of EU member states of the Mediterranean Basin to jointly create new blue jobs and a sustainable industrial growth in the marine and maritime sectors of the area. It was a priority of the Programme of the Italian Presidency of the Council of the European Union:., the Presidency will organise specific events and work with the Commission and Member States to define a Blue Growth flagship initiative for the Mediterranean. Work goes on under the Italian coordination with 9 other EU Member States (except Portugal and Belgium, all bordering the Mediterranean): Cyprus, Croatia, France, Greece, Malta, Slovenia, Spain and - since July 2014 Portugal and, since May 2015, Belgium. The process is supported and facilitated by the European Commission (DG RTD, DG MARE).

Pillar 4: Sustainable Tourism SO 2.1: Promote the sustainable valorisation of natural and cultural assets as growth assets in the Adriatic-Ionian area Creation of transnational networks and working groups for the definition of the principles of sustainable cultural/natural and tourism valorisation. Pillar 4: Sustainable Tourism Croatia & Albania Diversified tourism offer (products & services); Sustainable & responsible tourism management (innovation & quality) Support to the exchange of best practices for the identification of challenges and trends in the tourism sector including marketing, management of increased tourism flows, including joint analysis of tourism, trends and their potential impact, joint access to new tourism markets, business opportunities and dissemination of new technologies and knowhow. Development of sustainable tourism models focusing on low carbon, on air quality improvement and decreasing PM and NO2 emissions, low ecological footprint, slow food, involvement of young people and volunteers and other alternative offerings in line with the natural and cultural heritage. Development of an integrated and coordinated approach to heritage and cultural tourism. 14 Etc..

Towards a Sustainable Blue Economy Initiative for the Western Mediterranean(WEST MED)(DG MARE) www.westmed-initiative.eu/ 2.4. Sustainable consumption and production (maritime transport, ports, maritime and coastal tourism, marine aquaculture)...i) develop new theme-based tourist products and services including: natural, cultural and historical itineraries (including underwater), nautical and cruise tourism, sustainable marinas, pesca-tourism, fisheries, cultural heritage and recreational fishing; ii) building eco-friendly artificial reefs; iii) protecting and restoring coastal ecosystems (beaches and dunes) on the islands, iv) linking up sea and inland attractors (eno-gastronomy, culture, sports, etc.), and v) recognising skipper licences.
