A bilingual guide will describe the events in history leading up to the eventual movement of the capital city to its present location. Casco Viejo is home for monuments of Ferdinand de Lesseps and other Frenchmen instrumental in the ill-fated attempt of the French to construct a canal through Panama. PM Lunch at local restaurant. We will visit the Koricancha or Temple of the Sun, where we can appreciate the incredible masonry of the Incas, the Plaza de Armas and the Cathedral with its carved woodworks, altars and paintings. Then we will be driven to the Inca fortress of Sacsahuaman, Kenko, Puca Pucara and finally to Tambomachay, known as the Baths of the Inca. Finally, we stop at the living art workshop called Inka s Expression. The visit will allow passengers to see local artists creating wonderful silver, paintings and wood carvings. AM Our first stop is Pisaq market where we can shop for handicrafts. Then we will continue along the Urubamba valley surrounded by farm lands and mountains. PM Lunch at local restaurant. PM Continue to Ollantaytambo. There we will tour the Inca fortress whose construction was halted by the arrival of the Spaniards. This is a great chance to learn about the architecture and building techniques used by the Incas. PM Take the Vistadome train to Aguas Calientes town out of Ollantaytambo. Upon arrival we will be escorted to our hotel where we will have dinner. El Mapi Hotel or similar Sun Aug 12 th DAY 7 MACHU PICCHU TOUR AM Check out of hotel and depart by bus (about 25 minute ride) for Machu Picchu the ancient Incan citadel that is one of the current 7 Wonders of the World and a UNESCO World Cultural Heritage site. After the morning s guided tour we will have lunch at the Sanctuary Lodge restaurant. After lunch you will have the option to hike up to the Sun s Gate (Intipunku) or return to Aguas Calientes for relaxation and shopping. You may want to bring insect repellant and a walking stick with you for the tour. There is one public toilet at the entrance near the cafeteria, and no others once we enter the park area. A small fee is collected though to keep it clean. In the past the fee was 1 Sol (Peruvian currency only). PM Lunch at the Sanctuary Lodge s restaurant. Today we will journey from Cusco to Puno on the shores of Lake Titicaca, the highest navigable lake in the world. These islands are built out of layers of Totora (endemic reed) by its inhabitants who also used this kind of reed for housing and to build rafts used as a mean of transportation, for fishing and trading. PM Lunch included on Amantani Island,13,300 feet above sea level and famous for its terraced hillsides where its people used to farm. Pre- Incan peoples claimed that this island was a sacred place, and that is why, if you allow it, you can feel its mystical energies flow around you. AM We will tour Lima s colonial downtown and its highlights like the Plaza de Armas, where the Presidential Palace is located, also the Cathedral and the City Hall. Then, we will get to know Santo Domingo church and monastery, a XVII century jewel, recognized as cultural heritage by UNESCO. The tour goes on to the modern district of San Isidro. Finally we will visit Larco Museum, a private collection with treasures of the Incas.
