We made it. The Polar Vortex has gone back home. The grass has sprouts of green, the tulips are peeking through. This means that out first After Chapter Meeting Ride is just around the corner in fact, it is this Sunday. Is your bike ready? Most importantly, are you ready? We hosted a couple of important GWRRA Seminars in March and the last one was followed by a Crock Pot - Pot Luck. It was very informative. Along with the three seminars I arranged, Illinois State Trooper Master Sergeant Rich Kozik was on hand to present and answer questions. Trooper Kozik made some very good points as well as reinforcing the information that Earl Hobbs covered in the training seminars earlier. A couple things he mentioned, Are you ready to ride, Is Your Head in the Game? Not just being physically ready to ride, but being mentally ready to ride. Not being tired, not being mad, not being stressed, being well rested and of sound mind to go out and enjoy the ride. Are you ready? If you are not ready mentally, don t get on the motorcycle. Would you get on your bike and ride it knowing that you have a braking issue that would imminently cause harm to you and your co-rider? Riding without a clear head is just as bad, if not worse, than riding under the influence. Focus is the most important factor. Another point that he brought up is that most of us have not ridden in three to four months. Before you go out to ride, you should find a parking lot and practice your riding skills, and your braking skills. All of the State Trooper Motorcycle officers have to re-certify their riding skills after the winter. They go out and practice to pass to re-certify. Have you gone out into a parking lot to practice your skills? Why not? What is preventing you? The main point to take away from all of this is that you need to be a better rider. Seek out instruction; sign up for an MSF Advanced class. Take a Seminar. Preparing your bike for the riding season also includes preparing the rider and co-rider for the riding season. Page 2 Chapter Meeting Location (Continued from page 1) How is your safety equipment, your helmet and your riding gear? How old is your helmet? Has that helmet dropped to the ground? You may want to considering replacing it if it is over three years old or if you had accidently dropped it. Does that coat still fit? We all lost 50 or so pounds in the last 3 months not riding and being on a vigorous exercise program so we may need to buy a new jacket and possibly riding pants for this year. All things we should consider, as well as, the mechanical condition of your bike. Take a close look over your bike this week T-CLOCS (Tires, Chassis, Linkage, Oil, Controls, and Stands). Here is a link for the T-CLOCS Checklist. GWRRA Chapter IL-Z2 Meets at the Denny s restaurant at 17 W 660 22nd Street in Oakbrook Terrace, IL on the second Sunday of every month. Breakfast at 8:00 AM, meeting at 9:00 AM. We ride after the meeting!! (weather permitting) For additional updated information, go to our website at www.ilz2.com BREAKFAST CLUB Are you free on Wednesday mornings? Come and join our Breakfast Club it meets every Wednesday at 9am at the Sunmist Restaurant & Café located at 501 E. Lake Street in Addison. Weather permitting we will schedule an ABR (after breakfast ride.) Do you want to ride with a State Trooper? This is a program that was taken from Europe and used in England and had a huge impact in reducing Motorcycle accidents. See the Flyer in the Newsletter on page 19 for more information. I would like to thank our presenters, Earl Hobbs and Trooper Master Sergeant Rich Kozik, for taking time out of their day to make us better Riders. Our Chapter Educator has been at it again and has put together a nice article from MSF on Quick Tips on riding like you are invisible. He also brings up the pothole issue that we all experience this time of year. So please be careful when riding or even when driving your car. The State of Illinois is broke so pothole season might be a little longer than usual. My father-in-law always said, you need to Keep your eyes peeled out for the poor road conditions. See our Observation Ride and Picnic flyers on pages 20 & 21. Register early and save some money. We look forward to having some great riding weather and some FUN at the picnic. Our Riding Schedule is up to date and posted on page 6. John has done a great job keeping it up to date and adding rides for all of us. He has also posted the more Adventure Ride information for the Three Rivers Overnight Ride, as well as, announcing the Lake Superior Ride that it looks like Al Nurczyk will be leading. We have made it to 2014 s Riding Season. Let s all keep in mind the conditions of our motorcycles, the road conditions, our physical as well as our mental condition. Keep your head in the game as we ride safely in 2014 and beyond. Tony and Sharon Sundt Chapter Director

Page 12 CHAPTER EDUCATOR If you are like me, each spring your desire to get out on your bike is overwhelming. Spending the winter reading the motorcycle magazines, hearing about your friends "new ride" and pouring over the maps planning some of the routes for next summer's rides always gets us drooling over a much anticipated launch into the new riding season. We ache for the official start of the new riding season but did you know that the Illinois riding season is actually broken into a number of smaller, sub seasons? It's true my friends! It's far more convoluted that just jumping onto your bike when the first clear. semi-warm day presents itself. Contrary to popular belief, we experience more than the two seasons of Winter and Under-Construction. Our riding season really begins something like this: 1. "I Want To Ride But I Have to Wait Until All the Salt Washes Off the Road Season" This is the one that can drive any sane motorcyclist bananas. It's only salt dust, and you can hose it off in your driveway immediately after your first ride and you'll be fine but this item always breeds a goodly amount of cerebral concern. You know the allure of the "First Ride" vs. the torment that your quick clean-up will not remove all the salt. 2. "Pot Hole Season" Just the mention of these three words brings a shudder to most motorcyclists. Our survival out there requires a heightened awareness of Illinois' annual spring crop of this highly infectious road way scourge. A very serious extension to "Pot Hole Season" is "Disaster Avoidance Season." Disaster Avoidance Season manifests itself not only in a straight line, but even more dangerously, around cor ners. This "Lane Dance" we perform while dodging the roadway craters can be a quite dangerous season for us and our bikes. If not approached carefully, i.e., slowly and straight on, a pot hole has the potential to twist the front wheel and spit you off in an instant. 3. "I Need to Repair My Front Tire and Wheel Season" "Pot Hole Season" is followed immediately by "I Need to Repair My Front Tire and Wheel Season." If you've managed to bounce into one of many Illinois' winter canyon sized potholes and remained vertical you should count your blessings my friend. Skin takes a lot longer to heal than metal so even if the roadway crater has managed to mangle your front wheel you should still count yourself lucky that you did not succumb to some more insidious injury. 4. "Local Road Commission Employees (IDOT) Celebrate Overtime to Patch Potholes Season" What the hell is that mystery matter shoveled into a pothole and left to pack itself down by our tires? I have done some substantive research and discovered that the name of this substance is known as Crevice Reaching Asphalt Particulates, known mostly by the popular acronym CRAP. I don't know about you but I seem to find myself picking tenacious little pebbles of this stuff out of the bowels of my bike all season long. Stubborn little buggers aren't they? I hope the above information will serve to dispel the rumors that Illinois only has the two seasons of "Winter" and "Under-Construction." Remember folks, be careful out there. If you can't ride it safely, park it and walk! As usual, drive safe, be safe, watch out for those cagers, politicians, and avoid those nasty Illinois potholes...
