Half Day Tour in HERCULANEUM (4 h) **FREE SALE** Our journey takes us along the gorgeous coastal road through Castellammare di Stabia and out along the highway to Herculaneum. Herculaneum was destroyed along with Pompeii in 79 AD, and rediscovered in 1709. It was a residential town without Pompeii's commercial importance, surrounded by the villas of the wealthy Romans. When the catastrophe of 79 AD occurred Herculaneum was submerged under a torrent of mud and lava that hardened into a soft tufa (a kind of coarse rock) that preserved many of the timber features and household objects which can be seen today. A large portion of the old Herculaneum is still buried under the modern town and to this day, excavations are still being carried out to discover what treasures lie buried under the rock, to the extent that some families are being rehoused so work can continue. The scenery is superb, looking out over the bay of Naples and Salerno and along the coastline as the road twists and turns its way towards Positano, which is approx. 20 minutes drive from Sorrento. Built on different levels, from the main road all the way down to sea level, the town of Positano is like a waterfall cascading down the rocks to the sea. The coach stops momentarily here so you can enjoy the view and take photos (from inside the coach when possible). This spectacular journey continues with fabulous views all the way to Amalfi and it should take approximately 1 hour, arriving in Amalfi at around 11am, depending on traffic. Prestige Full Day POMPEII & HERCULANEUM SELECT Tour (8 h 30 m) Travel from Sorrento, along the scenic route out of the Sorrentine Peninsula, and onto the motorway until the exit for Herculaneum. Herculaneum was a residential coastal town which has been superbly preserved after the eruption of Vesuvius in 79 AD. On arrival at the entrance of the site, your guide will wait for you to pay your entrance fees and you will then have the chance to view the town from above, before heading down and for the guided tour, which lasts about an hour. It is incredible to see that there are still original timbers showing in the buildings and clay pots stored as they would have been at the time of the eruption. It was believed that many of the inhabitants tried to flee unsuccessfully towards the sea to escape the lava, unlike those in Pompeii who did not have a chance to move before being overcome by the lava. After a visit lasting 1 hour and a half, proceed to Pompeii, stopping first for a light lunch, a 3 course menu included in tour price. After lunch the guided tour inside Pompeii's ruins will take you to the House of the Argus, a grand place judging by its courtyard, but which is dwarfed by the Casa dell'albergo across the street, which covers a huge area. - GENERAL TERMS & CONDITIONS AGREEMENT BOOKING - CONFIRMATION All tours have to be booked with Gartour by e-mail (gartour@gartour.net or through our web site www.gartour.it). Some tours/excursions are on Free Sale basis (with automatic confirmation), while other tours/excursion are On Request and can be considered valid only after our booking confirmation. Upon confirmation we will advise whether free pick-up service from hotel is possible (if so, we will advise pick-up time) or if clients will have to make their own way to meeting point to join the tour. All the rates indicated are in and intended per person. PICK-UP IN HOTEL / PRESENTATION AT MEETING POINT For those tours including pick-up from hotel, clients have to be in the lobby of hotel waiting for tour representative on time. Then clients will be accompanied to the meeting point and shown the particular bus or guide for their specific tour in their language (please note that all tours may be performed in more than one language). IMPORTANT: At certain times there may be unforseen delays in the arranged pick-up times but we kindly request clients to wait in the hotel lobby. For those tours not including pick-up from hotel, we ask to all clients to be at the designated meeting points at the advised time in order participate (usually meeting time is 10-15 minutes prior departure). No reimbursement wil be granted to clients who is not at the indicated place of pick-up/departure at the time established. Tour companies reserve the right to cancel a tour without prior notice due to reasons beyond their control with the only obligation of reimbursing the cost of the tour. In this case, clients may claim reimbursement only of the amount paid. In the event of unforessen schedule or itinerary changes beyond control, tour companies reserve the right to provide no reimbursement. LIABILITY Gartour and partnering tour companies are not responsible for any loss of personal valuables, luggage or objects during excursions, or for any loss of personal items which are left on tour coaches, or for any damage casued by third parties to personal items during the tour. We are not also responsible for partial or total closures of museums, monuments and churches, delays or irregularities caused by third parties. Then an alternative itinerary and visits to other museums wil be proposed, without any variation to the established tariff, and clients will be informed prior to departure. In the event of unforeseen schedule or itinerary changes beyond control, tour companies reserve the right to not grant any reimbursements. COMPLAINTS Any client complaint must be communicated to Gartour in writing within and no later than 10 working days after the date of the tour.
