Campus 1. How to reach the campus? New /Old Railway Station: Option 1: Metro to Hauz Khas and then by Auto (Rs.40) Option 2: Direct Auto (Rs. 150-200), Prepaid Taxi (Rs. 200-250) Airport Take a prepaid cab Howrah Railway Station: Pre-paid Cab to Sector V Sealdah Railway Station Pre-paid Cab to Sector V Airport Pre-paid Cab to Sector V 2. When will the hostel allocation take place? The hostel allocation will take place 2-3 days before the commencement of your course. The allocation is done on certain criteria which is explained later in this document. You will be allowed to occupy your room as soon as the allotment is done. 3. Is accommodation available for parents? Not at the time of Orientation because there are a lot of parents coming down to the campus. During the 2 year course, however, you can avail the Guest Room facility about which you will be notified after you join.
Academics 1. When will the academic calendar for the coming year be given? What about the list of electives and courses taught? You will get a Student Handbook when you join. The handbook will contain the rules and regulations, academic calendar and the course structure. The list of electives and subjects that have been offered to the 2012-14 batch will be mentioned in the handbook. 2. Where do we get the text books for the courses? The institute will provide you with the textbooks for each course that you are taught. 3. Is it possible to register on a later date? In case of a genuine reason, the institute may allow you to join late. It is advisable to contact the GSD (Graduate Studies Division) and inform them of the same. The official timings are 9:15-6:30. Although several professors hold classes from 9-11 in the night too. One lecture is of 2 hours. 5. Will our batch be divided into sections? The batch will be divided into three sections of 50 students each. In there is only one section. 6. Will I need a laptop? If yes, should it be a high configuration one? Having a laptop is a necessity since all your projects, quizzes, and studies will require it. A laptop having decent processing power is more than sufficient. It is advisable that the battery life be good (>1 hour) as you won t get charging points in every classroom. 7. How strict is the attendance system at IIFT? Very strict. Attendance is taken more than once in every lecture. The attendance is taken by the professors using an online platform where the photograph of the candidate is visible against his/her name. 90% attendance is mandatory for each course. For every
10% fall in attendance, you lose one grade in that subject. In case of medical issues the institute may give waiver. 8. Is IIFT only about Trade? Absolutely not. Agreed, trade is what we are known for, and IIFTians are perceived to be giants in the world of Trading. But that does not mean we are any lesser a B-school for Finance/Marketing/Operations/Gen-Man enthusiasts. Come with an open mind and IIFT will offer you more than you can possibly learn. 9. Is IIFT only about studies? Again, the answer is NO. If you are wise enough, you will get ample opportunities to enjoy college life to its fullest. There will be loads of cultural and sports activities to keep you interested. 10. Do I have to study anything before joining IIFT? Well, here at IIFT, we all start from scratch, so no compulsion on anyone to prepare or read anything special. The dear old ET will be good enough for now. Moreover, we will also be sending study material for each domain a few weeks before the joining so that you can have some idea about the domains. Our advise would be to enjoy your pre IIFT days as much as you can. 11. Tell us something about the exchange program IIFT has signed MoUs with several foreign universities across Europe and students from IIFT spend their 3 rd Trimester at these Universities. In return, we have students from these universities coming to IIFT and pursuing their studies here. The program is once in a lifetime opportunity of getting the global exposure in your student life and learning different aspects of culture of countries that you visit during the program. The process for application for Student Exchange Program is very simple. You have to write a statement of purpose of your application for the exchange program. You also have to give preferences for the foreign universities that you intend to apply to. Then you will be interviewed by a panel of faculties. A final list is provided based on your preferences and interview. The tuition fee for the chosen university is borne by the institute but all other expenses have to be borne by the student concerned.
Campus Life 1. Apart from studies, what other activities take place at IIFT? At IIFT, we have a fully functional and active Cultural committee and some of the activities conducted are as follows: The Annual Management & Cultural Fest Quo Vadis ( Campus) and Advait ( Campus), the biggest of our calendar events. Previous performers at Quo Vadis include Lucky Ali, Shafqat Amanat Ali, Farhan (Jal) etc Regular 'official' parties in college, providing some welcome breaks from the MBA rigor Celebration of all festivals,national and regional The Quizzing club organizes regular Quiz nights The Sports Committee organizes Ultimate Warrior League ( Campus) and Titanomacy ( Campus), a mega sporting event based on the IPL format, with real time Team and player auctions. And yes, the money involved is real too Some talented music enthusiasts from our batch have also come together to form a band and we hope the incoming batch will contribute more in this regard There is also a photography cell 'PixCell' for all passionate photographers.
Mess and Food 1. Is mess fees compulsory? If yes how is it and what are the charges? Yes mess fees is compulsory. The food is decent and edible. But it is very difficult to comment as taste and preference vary from person to person. Breakfast, lunch, snacks and dinner are available. The current mess charges are Rs. 7500 per trimester. The figure may increase or decrease according to the market condition. A lot of students prefer to eat at one on the several dhabas present near the institute. ( Campus) 2. What are the drinking water facilities available? The mess has a water cooler. There is a water cooler on every floor in the old hostel (on campus) and on every floor in C-9 (off-campus). Every hostel in has refrigerators in each floor and also water filters in each block in every hostel. 3. What are the other facilities apart from mess? There is a Coffee Day Express kiosk on campus which is open throughout the night. You can get tea, coffee, sandwiches etc over here. A Lipton kiosk is also present which serves you tea, coffee and Maggi throughout the night. There is also an IRCTC canteen that is open during lunch hours. There are several dhabas near the institute which provide a wide range of snacks and food at reasonable prices. Lot of food joints around the campus and our hostels.
Infrastructure 1. How are the hostel facilities? IIFT has three hostels: OId Hostel (OH), New Hostel (NH) and C-9. OH and NH are located on campus where as C-9 is a 5 min walk away. You will be staying in OH and C-9. As OH has limited capacity, some boys of your batch will be putting up in C-9. All the girls stay in OH and the remaining rooms are allotted to the boys according to the final merit list. You will be informed about your hostel room number a couple of days before you join.food is served at both OH and C-9 Hostels. Hostel facilities are really good. Students stay in a 2 seater room with a refrigerator and a TV in every flat (2 rooms per flat). 2. Tell us more about OH and C-9 OH has rooms available on triple sharing basis with attached washrooms. C-9 has twin sharing rooms with common washrooms. Both the hostels have elevators. Hot water is available during winter. You are not allowed to have any high power electronic equipment like refrigerators in your room but desert coolers are allowed. There is a refrigerator in the mess which you can use to store perishable items. A common network printer and a common desktop computer is present in each hostel. 3. Is there any entry-exit time for the hostels? No. But there is a well-defined exit and entry time for the campus. Yes, the entry time for Boys is 11:00 PM and for girls it is 10:30 PM. Exit time is 5:00 AM. 4. Are boys allowed to go to girl s rooms and vice versa? No. 5. Is there a common room present? The basement of the old hostel serves as the common room. It has a TV, some chairs, a TT table and AC s installed. C-9 has a TV and TT table installed in the dining area
6. Does IIFT have a gym? Yes. There is gym in the NH and there are plans to make one in the OH as well. Yes. We have a gym at one of the hostel buildings. 7. How safe are the hostels? The hostels are very safe. Several inhabitants don t even believe in locking their rooms! Although no incident of stealing has occurred yet, it is advisable to lock your rooms. 8. How are the medical facilities on campus and nearby hospitals? / A doctor visits the campus daily from. You can approach him for minor problems. Also, there are 2 hospitals at walking distance from the campus. The Koshish club of IIFT keeps medicines for general health problems and you can always approach the coordinators for help. These medicines are provided to the students free of cost. 9. How is the internet facility at IIFT? / The entire campus is wifi enabled. Each student is allowed to register one device with the authorities on which the wifi will work. It is advisable that this device be your laptop as you will need it for all online quizzes. In, each student is provided with a dongle. 10. Is there a stationary shop present on campus? Yes. In addition to that, the nearest market i.e. Katwaria Sarai is a 10 min walk from IIFT. You will get everything you need in the market. No, but a lot shops are available nearby.
11. Is there any ATM on campus? How far is the nearest SBI branch? As of now there is no ATM. However talks are going on with SBI and we hope that it will materialize in the next few months. All the banks have ATMs in Katwaira Sarai. The nearest SBI branch (NCERT) is approximately 2kms away. ATM is not located inside the campus. But an AXIS bank ATM is available right outside the campus gate. SBI Electronic Complex branch is just 100 Meters from the campus. 12. How is the library facility? We have a library with a holding of around 84,000 volumes and subscriptions to 800 journals with complete online cataloguing. The Library has a unique collection of publications of FAO, IMF, OECD, UNCTAD, UNCTC, World Bank, and other international agencies. Students have access to database such as the NIC, CMIE, India Trades, World Bank Indicators and other audio-visual aids on management. A WTO Resource Centre in the Library to focus exclusively on WTO issues has also been set up. This Centre is the only one of its kind in India.
Miscellaneous 1. Which mobile connection is the best? Are there any campus plans available? Almost all mobile connections have decent connectivity in the campus. However we suggest Vodafone or Airtel as their network is slightly better and schemes are more student friendly. Campus plans are generally available once you join the institute. 2. Is there any dress code for classes? No. However you will need to be suitably dressed for guest lectures and other events. The dress code for these events will be told to you in advance. 3. What are the loan facilities available? Usually students prefer taking loans from SBI under the Scholar loan scheme as the rate of interest is the minimum. A few banks will be conducting sessions where they will tell you about their loan schemes.
