Sydney Chinese Lions THE LIONS CLUB OF SYDNEY CHINESE INC. SPECIAL POINTS OF INTEREST: Changeover 2008 A Record Fundraising Effort Excellence in Year Round Membership Growth Annual Membership Fees Due Welcome to New Members INSIDE THIS ISSUE: Result of Humanitarian Scholarship 2008 Cheque Presentation Ceremony for the Royal Flying Doctor Service DG Carol s Communique Photos & emails with Twin Club Messages from International Director Rhako 2-3 4-7 8-9 10-11 12 V O L U M E V, I S S U E V I My fellow Lions I am pleased to report that at our Changeover 2008 on 4 June, the 2008-9 Board was inducted by DG Carol. For me, it is an honour and privilege to have the opportunity to SERVE the Club and community in the capacity of President for the fifth year running. Throughout the past four years, with the support of you and the community, our Club has made great strides, both in fundraising and membership growth. In the current Lions year alone, ie, 1 July 2007 to 30 June 2008, we have raised and donated a total sum of $80,500 - $57,000 for the Royal Flying Doctor Service of Australia, $15,000 for the Sichuan Earthquake Relief, $2,500 for the Myanmar Cyclone Relief, $2,000 for the Chinese Australian Services Society and awarded $4,000 to our Humanitarian Scholarship winners. These, together with the ambulance we handed over to St John President s Message Ambulance in October 2007, we have broken yet another record in our Club s 13 years history - a remarkable collective achievement indeed! Despite the worldwide trend of diminishing Lions membership, for 4 years in a row, we have met the LCI target of net membership growth. For the 3 Lions years 2004-7, we have been presented the LCI Year Round Growth Excellence Awards. Having reached the target this year, we are expecting a similar award to reach us soon. However, I would expect, like previous years, that there ll be a drop in membership from now to October and a steady recovery thereafter. Yes, could I remind you that our annual fee is now due. If you still haven t paid, please send your cheque for $150, addressed to the Lions Club of Sydney Chinese Inc, to PO Box K422, Haymarket NSW 2 3 J U N E 2 0 0 8 2000 soon. Members and Guests at Changeover 2008 with New Inductees This issue of the Bulletin is fairly substantial as much have happened during the month. You ll find details of winners of Humanitarian Scholarship 2008 on pages 2 and 3. There s good coverage of t h e Cheque Presentation Ceremony for the Royal Flying Doctor Service on pages 4 to 7. DG Carol s June Communique is featured on pages 8 and 9. Remember our Finnish twin? Recent photos and emails between them and us can be found on pages 10-11. International Director Tapani Rahko s encouraging and informative messages are published on page 12. Finally, a warm welcome to Lions Sonia Chuang, Henry Leung, Raymond Tong, Grace Tsang and Jasmine Wong. They were inducted on 4 June and we look forward to SERVING together with them. Yours in Lions Anthony

On top of this, the support given by political leaders, the Consulate General of the People s Republic of China, the Chinese media, fellow lions, sponsors and the community at large has been vital and is greatly appreciated. This donation has been made possible by the generous support of the Ball s many Sponsors and Donors. Remy Martin was its Principal Sponsor. PAGE 8 June Communique from District Governor Carol Alderson Hi everyone, Congratulations to our N5 State Youth of the Year Winner Edward Miller who was successful in being awarded both the Public Speaking and Overall Winner of the National YoY Quest in Darwin. Edward was sponsored by the Burwood Lions and is the second N5 State winner in the last 2 years. The Convention was again a wonderful experience of meeting old and new friends and learning more about where Lions are headed. We were privileged to have PIP J Frank Moore III attend and our ID Djoko Soeroso. There were many highlights to the Convention and many fun filled nights out. The opening ceremony was spectacular with the flags being carried in by school children, the 3 main flags being parachuted down, indigenous dancers and a welcome by the Chief Minister of the NT. The remembrance ceremony was at sunrise and a single white dove was released by each District Governor to remember Members of LC Järvenpää Ainot those Parading who at their had own passed Fashion on. We enjoyed Show many presentations and addresses by a host of interesting and inspirational guests. A District Governor Carol Alderson fond farewell and sincere thank you was extended to PDG Carlene King for her years of service and dedication to our youth as her term as the Youth and Community manager has expired. The Notices of Motion were presented and debated with the following result: CNM1 carried CNM2 carried CNM3 carried NM1 carried NM2 carried NM3 Lost NM4 withdrawn NM5 carried NM6 carried NM7 carried NM8 carried NM9 lost NM10 lost. The Convention Committee did a wonderful job of accommodating 1400 attendees and as always our SAA Bob Korotcoff ensured that all business, hospitality and general running rules were all conducted in a professional manner. Dean and I also took a few extra days in Darwin where we had a little bit of time to take in some extra sights. We did a wonderful 12 hour tour where we visited Litchfield Park, went on the jumping crocodiles tours, saw giant termite nests and swam in a billabong where they assumed there were no crocodiles. On Saturday 24th it was my privilege to attend the Centenarians Afternoon Tea organised by the Lions Club of Sydney in cooperation with the office of Her Excellency, the Governor of NSW, the

PAGE 9 District Governor s Communique (continued) Honourable Professor Marie Bashir. The afternoon was held at Government House and was attended by 35 centenarians and their carers or family members. This event has been hosted by this club for the past 27 years (except for 2007). President David Pell thanked the Governor for her support and assistance by her staff. This year I am encouraging all club Secretaries to complete the Club President Excellence Award for 2007-2008. Forms are to be completed by the Club Secretary and forwarded to me by 31st July 2008. The form for printing, which also outlines the requirements that must be met, can be found on the International web page under Club Resources. Please prepare now so that your club can reward your Club President for their work during the 2007/08 year. The Sydney 2010 Host Committee invites all Lions, Lioness, Leos and Partners who are inter- ested in making a valuable Members of LC Järvenpää Ainot contribution Parading at their to own our Fashion Convention in Show Sydney as a VOLUNTEER to lodge this Expression of Interest form. The Convention will be held from 28 June to 2 July 2010. Childhood blindness is only one part of the global vision crisis. If nothing is done, experts say that the world s blind population could double from 37 million to 74 million by 2020. Lions worldwide have so far donated and pledged $164,789,704 US dollars ($176,324,983 AUD) to CSFII, an achievement we can all be proud of! DGE Elvio and Gai will be leaving soon for the International Convention in Bangkok scheduled for 23 June and we wish them all the very best. As this will be my last Carol s Communiqué I would like to thank each and every one of you for your support, encouragement, patience and assistance throughout the year, and for putting up with my small newsletter each month. It has been a privilege to serve in the role of District Governor and I have learnt so very much, both about Lions and about our members. I wish each and every new board member and every Lion the very best of wishes for the incoming year. I would also like to thank my own club, Cambridge Park, for their understanding and support throughout the year, thanks guys. Thank you everyone and I hope to see you all at our District Changeover. Our District Changeover is being held on Friday 18 July at North Ryde RSL. Cost is $60.00pp which includes a 3-course meal, beer, wine, soft drink, tea, coffee and entertainment for you to dance to. There will be minimal formalities so please come along and join us in welcoming our new DG Elvio. Why not make this your clubs dinner meeting for the month of July and start 08/09 in a new way. Please RSVP by 4 th July. Carol Alderson District Governor

A Letter from our Finnish Twin Club Dear Anthony and all Lions friends in LC Sydney Chinese, It is almost summer time in Finland. Many trees are blooming and the nature is very beautiful. Everything is green and the days are long. Last week our club had a nice changeover meeting, The tail twister had organized for us a trainer in some orient relaxation methods; then we had sauna and gave some gifts to President Terhi. We dressed some funny clothes on her and gave her our traditional shoes. The costume reminds me of the main character in a Swedish movie for children. You can see in the picture how she looked like. During our summer months the clubs in Finland have only some informal meetings so in May we use to have some party before the summer. We organized our traditional 1st May Party for elderly people. We brought some soft drinks, party hats and balloons to the party. We also had some dancers, players and singers. It is wonderful to see how those elderly people enjoy to listen to the music and see the children dancing. To visit this house for the elderly people is my club's main and elderly service project. Campaign Sight First II will be over very soon. Almost every club in Finland has taken part in this big campaign, also our club. I suppose our donations will be more than USD 7000 by the end of June. We are very proud to reach the goal which LCIF has set, USD120 per lion in every club. I hope I will meet many of your club members at the Bangkok Convention. I am the only one coming from our club but I will certainly have many greetings to bring. Our incoming president is Sirkka Nieminen. Her email address is sirkka.nieminen@hotmail.com. She is very efficient and has nice ideas of new projects. Her dream is to make our relationship with you, our twin club, even closer than this year. Best greetings Helena Rahko Järvenpää Ainot Lions doing their relaxation exercises

A Reply from President Anthony Dear Helena Many thanks for sending us the latest update on your Club's activities. Congratulations to incoming President Sirkka Nieminen. It is jolly nice of her agreeing to take over the helms and we wish her a successful and meaningful Lions year ahead. President Terhi certainly looks rather funny in her outfit punctuated by her oversized shoes. We have just held our Changeover Ceremony and we managed to raise $15,000 for the Sichuan relief funds - not a huge amount but our members are doing our part. I don't think we'll be going to Bangkok for the International Lions Convention but we have entered a few things for the Lions international contests - web site, bulletin and photos - fingers crossed - hope we'll be able to win something. If you hear of something positive in Bangkok, do let me know! President Terhi in her special outfit complete with colour matching oversized shoes Wishing you and Tapani all the very best and hope you'll have a great time in Bangkok. I'm sure more fun will come your way as Tapani's International Directorship goes into the second year. Regards Anthony International Director Tapani, Helena & Minna with President Anthony at CNY Parade in 2007

Correspondence with International Director Tapani Rahko Dear Lion President Anthony, 25/5/08 Dear Tapani 25/5/08 Thank you for the link. You have very good programs and big donations. We have had sad catastrophes lately and many lions are helping in the relief. Thank you for your warm words. Yes, indeed, there are so many disasters lately. I trust most Lions are doing their best to help out one way or another. We just came from the MD Convention from Germany. Helena said she would write to you this week about their club s May meeting. Did you have a good time in Germany? I didn't know it's in Germany you had your MD Convention, I thought it was in Finland. We became grandparents two weeks ago. Minna, whom you and your Leos also met, had a wonderful baby girl. See you soon in Bangkok. Sincerely, Tapani Congratulations to Minna, her baby girl and yourselves! Is LCI going to start informal Clubs for baby Lions cubs, particularly when they belong to the third generation of Lions?? I look forward to hearing from Helena. Regards Anthony Dear Anthony, 26/5/08 Thank you for the answer. Yes, LCI has donated to China and Finnish lions as well both to China and Myanmar. Swedish Lions have a very good tent project with the Swedish government and they have sent big tents to China. We have attended lately MD Conventions in Sweden and Germany. Our own MD Convention in Finland will be in one and a half weeks. We have together 32 Multiple or Single Districts in 32 European countries. Outside those 32 countries some European countries have only few Lions Clubs and they don t have a District yet. In Germany they had about 400 attendants in their Lions Convention and as many Leos in their Leo Convention which was held at the same time. Many of the social events were held together. Leos were also drivers for the foreign guests. The convention was very well organized and 2. International Vice President Eberhard Wirfs was also present. In our National MD Convention in Finland we will have about 3000 participants. Minna is organizing an International Leo Weekend in Helsinki in July. So, their baby will get her first impression of Lionism then. Have a good week. Sincerely, Tapani

The Lions Club of Sydney Chinese Inc. P.O. Box K422 Haymarket NSW 2000 Australia email: We sydneychineselions@yahoo.com.au Serve The Lions Club of Sydney Chinese Inc. is a member of Lions Clubs International, an international non profit community service organization, upholding a common motto "WE SERVE". Today, there are Lions Clubs in 202 countries and geographical areas all over the world. In District 201N5, which covers the Sydney area and Norfolk Island, there are some 75 Clubs with around 1,700 members. Amongst these, there are around 7 Chinese-based Clubs. Sydney Chinese Lions is the first of these Chinese-based Clubs chartered in April 1995. Over the past thirteen years, under the leadership of President Dr. Anthony Cheung and other Past Presidents, in conjunction with the relentless effort of its members, and on top of all these, the generous donations and sponsorships received from the community, the Club has raised and donated over two hundred fifty thousand dollars to a number of charities including the Royal Flying Doctor Service of Australia, St John Ambulance, the Australian Red Cross, the Sir David Martin Foundation, the Fred Hollows Foundation, Westmead and Concord Hospitals, the Children's Mobility (Hart Walker) Foundation and the Elderly Australian Chinese Homes. Thousands had reaped the benefits. The Club is also mindful of encouraging young adults to participate in humanitarian services, hence, since 2003, it has been offering its humanitarian scholarships.
