CAMPOREE GUIDE Powahay District invites Boy Scouts to a weekend of STEM FUN. The program focus is earning STEM Awards, STEM Merit Badges, teaching online responsibilities, with camping and a first ever gaming party. Scouts are encouraged to bring their cell phones, laptops or tablets. Our mission Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics STEM, are vital to our future the future of our country, and the future of our children. STEM is everywhere; it shapes our everyday experiences. Making science and math fun and interesting might also plant the seed of interest that could grow into an exciting and rewarding STEM career. Located in Greenwich, The Ernest Thompson Seton Scout Reservation is a 249 acre property on Riversville Rd. The camp offer both lean-to s, camping sites, five miles of hike trails and a pond for fishing. Sign Up Deadline is Monday, May 2, 2016 or 150 paid participants whichever comes first. Powahay District Boy Scout STEM Camporee May 21-22, 2016 Seton Scout Reservation, 363 Riversville Rd, Greenwich, CT. Hosted By Troop 5 Stamford Program Overview as of April 2, 2016 Just like in the real world of ever changing technology, our STEM Camporee is still in development revolving and upgrading. And that will be our theme for the weekend power up, upgrade and if needed reboot. We wanted to present a scenario of what will happened over the weekend. FRIDAY May 20 Camp Opens 5 pm for individual campers and troops to arrive. Check in at the Neilson building and then proceed to set up your campsite. After that you can come down to the Pray Building. The canteen will be open at 6:30 serving pizza, hot dogs and other snacks for a small fee or bring your own bag dinner. Juice and water will be available. We have an open program for Friday night including a Cyberchip review and some preparations for Saturday Merit Badges and STEM Awards and a Star Party Astronomy Hike. Cyberrams 3104, from AITE Stamford will bring large robots for display and will assist with the Robotic Merit Badge National Chess Tournament (tentative) with ranking being organize for the Chess Merit Badge class Activities and demonstrations on Robotics, computer networking, gaming programming, Star Party and the Science behind BB Gun Shooting and Archery. After Dinner The Gaming Party 8:00 to?????: In place of a traditional camporee campfire, Scouts will have fun at a first ever Gaming Party. This is a firm deadline so that we may order t- shirts, food, patches and program supplies. 3. Only those that are paid in full by May 2 will be considered registered. 4. Please report all injuries. We will provide a cell phone to call in for emergencies at check in. As per BSA Guidelines All Scouts at the camporee must have a BSA Annual Health and Medical Record with a parent consent form or they cannot participate in the camporee. These forms should kept by the adult leader in charge but be readily available in case of emergency and shown if First Aid is required. Part A is an informed consent, release agreement, and authorization that needs to be signed by a parent and/or legal guardian for all youth under 18. Part B is general information and a health history. A Physician signed form is not required for this and activities less than 72 hours. Check-in Procedures, Camping Info, and our Menu CHECK IN will occur in at the Neilson Building right off of the parking area: We are encouraging Troops and Scout participants to come in Friday night. We are planning some Friday night activities to prepare for the Saturday events and it would help with parking. We are sharing camping, programs and parking with our Cub Scout Packs. Friday Arrivals: Bring your own bag dinner or for a small fee hot dogs and pizza slices will be available at the Pray Building starting at 6:30 PM. Saturday Arrivals: You must arrive by 8 AM, check-in, set up your campsite and be ready for the 9 AM Opening Ceremony. Again we encourage Friday night arrival as we may not be able to offer programs missed Friday night. At check-in we ll have t-shirts, updated schedules, and maps with program locations. To speed up the registration process and ensure that the activities begin on time - we ask that you please designate only one person from your unit to check in. Provisional Scouts (those attending on their own) should check in with a parent. After check-in you may proceed to the Boy Scout Camping area to set up your campsite. Troop Gear Bring only what you need. We are providing dining hall meals so that Scouts can fully participate in a very active program. This should also help with the amount of troop gear needed. Uniform for the Weekend is Class-B. Full uniform is not required and we ask all of our Boy Scouts to attend the opening ceremony wearing their STEM Camporee T-shirt. Scout Own Service: Not on the schedule yet, but we would like to offer a brief Scout Own Service (inter faith worship service). We need a troop willing to host this for us (great communication merit badge requirement). Camping and Camp Seton Located in Greenwich, The Ernest Thompson Seton Scout Reservation is a 249 acre property on Riversville Rd. The camp offer both lean-to s, camping sites, five miles of hike trails and a pond for fishing. Boy Scouts camping area is located in upper Seton. You will not be able to pull your car up to your campsite; so please be aware that whatever you plan on bringing; you must carry or cart it to the camping area. Cub Scout Packs and Troops: Cub Packs that have a special relations with a troop and the troop is agreeable, may camp with the troop. Cub Scouts and Webelos MUST register through the Cub Scout Registrations and are NOT permitted to participate in the Boy Scout Program. Cub Scouts and Webelos arrive Saturday morning (not Friday night). If a Troop is assisting with helping them set up a campsite then please make sure they are down at the Pray building Saturday at 10 AM for their opening ceremony. Camporee Menu (All part of the $30/fee No charges) Saturday, Breakfast: Scramble eggs, bacon, cold cereal, OJ and coffee Saturday, Lunch: Marconi and cheese, chicken nuggets, juice, ice tea, coffee Saturday, Dinner: Swedish meatballs, mashed potatoes, gravy, vegetable, salad, rolls, dessert, juice and coffee. Sunday, Breakfast: cold cereal, bagels, pastries, OJ and coffee. As a courtesy; we ll offer free coffee for adults only, juice and water throughout the day on Saturday for youth and adults. Think GREEN bring a water bottle to fill. We recommend participants keep these items in their possession at all times. Daypacks are recommended and Troops may want to provided a vehicle to lock up these items when not in use. Overview When we set up this event it was our intention to be able offer a Scout a chance to work on one merit badge and one Nova/STEM Award. We re still working on that goal but recognizing that some merit badges may require additional time. It will also depend on Scouts completing the prerequisites. COMING SOON We re still in the process of signing up Merit Badge Counselors, for them to set up their courses and come up with the prerequisites. Watch your email for: A final scheduling of Merit Badges at the STEM Camporee. List of prerequisites. A method for Scouts to sign up for merit badges. Scouts that are paid and registered through the online registration will be given first options for merit badges. We are limiting class size to 15 boys. STEM Camporee Merit Badge & STEM Awards Workshop Saturday, April 30, 10 to 12 Noon at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints 686 South Ave, New Canaan. This is an opportunity for Scouts to meet with the counselor for a review of the requirements and prerequisites needed. Page 5 We ll also have the STEM Awards Review This will take place during the District Cub Scout Pinewood Derby so please be courteous and mindful of that program taking place. Troop Preparations 1. Start getting your Scout registered and paid for online at http://www.ctyankee.org/districts/ powahay/stemcamp. PLEASE do not wait until May 2. 2. Start getting a list of what merit badges and STEM Award your Scouts are interested in taking. Merit Badge Guidelines 1. Scouts can select one merit badge. 2. Scouts must arrive with a blue card signed by their Scoutmaster. 3. Merit Badge Worksheet can be download at http://www.ctyankee.org/districts/powahay/ stemcamp and can be completed ahead of time. This is for note purposes only and does not fulfill the merit badge requirements. 4. Scouts are responsible for obtaining the merit badge book. NOTE: We have replaced Inventing with Signs, Signals, and Codes and Game Design with Astronomy.

STEM Awards being offered: Woosh Engineering Design to Crunch Math Start Your Engines Technology Shoot Fun with Science We are asking Troops to provided a unit held Nova/STEM Counselor. No special expertise needed for this position and we will provide quick training at the May 4 Roundtable. This will provide a resource for Scouts at the unit level if they need to complete STEM requirements after the camporee. Our plan right now is to offer STEM Awards in both the morning and the afternoon. If a Scout has already earned one of the required merit badges for the STEM Award he is not required to take additional merit badges. He can simply work on the STEM Award. SPL will finalize approved games to be played at the STEM Camporee. From Merritt Parkway Southbound: Take the CT-120A N/King St. exit, EXIT 27, toward Armonk, N.Y. (Crossing into New York).Turn slight right onto King St/CT-120A. Continue to follow King St (Passing through Connecticut and New York, then crossing into Connecticut 1.3mi.) Turn right onto Sherwood Ave. (1.0mi) Turn left onto Riversville Rd. (0.3mi) Camp Seton entrance is clearly marked on right. From I-95: Take the Arch St exit, EXIT 3. Northbound: Turn left off ramp. Southbound: Turn right off ramp. Take the 3rd left onto Sound View Dr. (0.2mi) Turn right onto Field Pt Rd.(0.3mi) Take the 3rd left onto W Putnam Ave/US-1. (0.2mi) Take the 1st right onto Brookside Dr.(0.5) Turn slight left onto Glenville Rd.(1.7mi) Turn right onto Riversville Rd. (2.2mi) Camp Seton entrance is clearly marked on right. Parking and Carpooling We have limited parking at Seton Scout Reservation and ask that your troop please make arrangements to car-pool. Troops should meet in a public parking area and consolidate boys and gear in as few cars as possible. This will assist greatly in parking and traffic concerns at the camp. All vehicles parking at Camp Seton must display a Parking Pass with contact information and to be seen from the windshield. Please make as many copies as needed to give to your families. PLEASE DISPLAY in your windshield as you approach camp. This will allow those coordinating TRAFFIC and PARKING to direct you to the appropriate parking area.
