NORTH GEORGIA MOUNTAINS, USA Knights Mill Farm
Knights Mill Farm NORTH GEORGIA MOUNTAINS, USA Introduction: This historically significant property is perfect for development into a family compound with many choice lodge sites on one of the cascading streams or gentle ridges with long distance mountain and sweeping pasture views. Located in southwest Gilmer County within an easy 60 minute drive from Atlanta s I-285, the property consists of 1+ miles of rushing stream, +/-10 acres of lush pasture and +/-340 additional acres of mostly very mature valuable timber. This property has a very bucolic and authentic country feel yet is only minutes from major shopping, restaurants, bars, organic farms, wineries, white water rafting, and many other attractions in and around the Southern Dream Town (GARDEN & GUN July 15 ) of Ellijay, Ga. Still in the Knight family, the property was assembled beginning in 1943 by prominent local business man C. C. Knight and his family who lived on and enjoyed the property, using it for gardening, cattle and hay farming, hunting and general recreation. The Knights have been excellent stewards, timbering the land only sparingly and meticulously maintaining the pasture.
The Land: The property features an interesting variety of topographical features from rock walls carved over the millenniums by falling water, to plentiful, gently sloping land and long high ridges with panoramic views of The Cohutta Wilderness, the Appalachian Trail, and Rich and Burnt mountains. Very valuable, mature stands of white and red oak, poplar, white and yellow pine, persimmon, and many other species grace the rich forest land, much of which has not been timbered since at least 1943. The lush pastures serve as a gateway to the main, scenic stream and old mill ruins located in the dense mature woodland. The abundance of streams springs and natural food sources create ideal conditions for large populations of turkey and deer. Mature stands of highly merchantable White Oak, White Pine, Mixed Hardwood, and Loblolly Pine combine with excellent topography to create an economical opportunity for conversion to more lush pasture land if desired.
The Water: Land with clean rapidly flowing water has always been the most sought after for its natural beauty and practical uses. Ruins of a 19th century water powered grist mill add an interesting historic element confirming the land s intrinsic value. Well over 1 mile of bold rushing stream with large steep rapids, cascades, shoals and pools and over.5 miles of substantial secondary feeder stream water rich valleys nurturing timber and wildlife. For many years, a gravity fed pure, clear spring provided the family with excellent water for drinking and all household uses. With an average annual rainfall of 60 inches +, the streams and springs flow abundantly in all seasons. White pine, beech and other hardwoods along with blooming mountain laurel, dog woods, sourwood and other species, especially around the streams, produce a riot of bright color every spring and keep the water shaded and cool in the spring and summer.
