Local News One of a kind black flamingo returns to Akrotiri Salt Lake A rare black flamingo thought to be the only one of its kind in the world has returned to the Akrotiri Salt Lake, within the Western Sovereign Base Area of Cyprus, just under a year after its last visit, the British bases said on Tuesday. Last March, the flamingo, which is believed to suffer from a condition known as melanism, a genetic irregularity which causes it to generate more melanin than usual, turning them a dark brown, or black, caused a media storm with its whereabouts being published in news all over the world. Its return is another coup for the Akrotiri Environmental and Education Centre and the Sovereign Base Areas environmental team, which has invested an enormous amount of time and resources to ensure the Ramsar protected salt lake remains a safe and healthy environment for migrating birds and other species, the bases said in a statement. Pantelis Charilaou, the SBAA Environmental Officer, said he was thrilled to see the flamingo return again this year: Very few people had ever been fortunate enough to lay eyes on it prior to last year so for it to return again is wonderful. Of course we are all very excited because we believe it could be the only Flamingo of its kind in the world and very little is known about it. He said the best possible viewpoint would be from the Akrotiri Environmental and Education Centre where they have a special area designed with views of the salt lake. But Charilaou warned: If people walk onto the salt lake itself it could disrupt the birds habitat and we absolutely do not want that. Every year the flamingos flock to the salt lake to feed off of brine shrimps, with many of them staying all year round if the conditions remain perfect, which according to Charilaou, they currently are: We have had a lot of rainfall recently and flamingos are opportunistic and will stay as long as there is food and water. At the last count we had 6,500 flamingos in Akrotiri and they usually stay between November and April but there is no way of telling how long the black flamingo will stay for. My advice would be to take the opportunity to see it now, because we cannot be sure it will be back again next year.. The Bases are exceptionally attractive for birds with more than three hundred bird species recorded to date and the cliff faces in Episkopi are home to the only nesting pairs of Griffin vultures found on the island, it concluded.
Big part of the Tombs of the Kings road to be completed in April. A big part of the works along the Tombs of the Kings road in Paphos will finally be completed in April after an 11- month delay, chairman of the House communications and works committee Antonis Antoniou said on Sunday. In a written statement, Antoniou said that following a number of problems and delays the section of the road from Tombs of the Kings Avenue to Potima would be finished by mid-april. He said the section to Potima had been accelerated to serve the residents of the affected communities and the large number of tourists visiting the region. This would also include the secondary road network and the connection of Lemba with the coastal road. The project, which has been going on for years, had been broken into eight parts and was essentially set to be completed by April 2015. But the company asked for an 11 month extension. The entire project is expected to cost around 14 million. Tourism sector to get 50m boost to extend season THE tourism industry is expected to receive some 50m in investments this year through a government scheme aimed at extending the island s tourism season, Tourism and Energy minister George Lakkotrypis said on Friday. Addressing the Hotel Managers Association annual general meeting, he hailed last year s tourism performance, calling it a strong end to 2015, stressing that efforts to boost the quality of service need to continue. Bearing in mind international events such as the closure of Russian airline Transaero, the fall in the rouble s exchange rate against the Euro and the increasing instability in the broader region, Lakkotrypis said, 2015 is rightfully ranked amongst our strongest years in tourism, with results close to those of 2001, our reference point for the best performance.
Detailing a funding scheme set to be implemented by the Cyprus Tourism Organisation (CTO), Lakkotrypis said it would be launched within the first few months of 2016 and is expected to contribute to 50m in investments.efforts are being undertaken to boost Cyprus air connectivity with as many countries as possible and a process is underway to simplify entrance procedures for countries such as China and boosting infrastructure, notably golf resorts, marinas and the casino. At the moment, he said his ministry is preparing a study to create a national strategy for tourism. CTO vice chairman Kostas Koumis expressed his certainty that upcoming statistics will reveal tourism arrivals exceeded the 2.6 million recorded in 2000 and 2001. These are attributed to increases from markets such as the UK which for the first time since 2011, hit the one million mark, and the German market that saw a 34 per cent increase. Although competition has skyrocketed, Cyprus Chamber of Commerce and Industry vice chairman Andreas Matsis said tension between Russia and Turkey, the political crisis in the Middle East, the fall of a Russian aircraft in Egypt and the devaluation of the sterling against the euro would factor in to help Cyprus tourism industry.
