The Jaivilas Palace GWALIOR

History of Gwalior An historic city founded by King Suraj Sen, Gwalior is a part of the state of Madhya Pradesh. It is famed for its outstanding palaces, sacred temples and glorious th monuments. Gwalior's history is as fascinating as its attractions. Its story can be traced back to the 8 century BC, when legend tells that King Suraj Sen was miraculously cured of leprosy by a sage named Gwalipa. In his gratitude, the king named Gwalior after him. With commanding structures like the sandstone mosque, rock temples and colossal statues, the city maintains these glorious reminders of its past. Its magnificent fort looks down from majestic hills, giving spectacular views to all who visit it. As well its monuments and museums, Gwalior also has spectacular cultural heritage. It was the birthplace of the great musician and favourite of Raja Man Singh Tomar, Mian Tansen and his memory is celebrated every year with a huge musical event. Gwalior is a sprawling city where tradition is entwined with modernity, offering an enthralling and a beguiling experience to all those who visit. Connectivity To Gwalior Railways. Gwalior lies 122 km south of Agra, 423 km North of Bhopal and 313 km of New Delhi. The city has a major commercial railway station on the North-Central railway. Gwalior is, perhaps, one of the only few places where there both narrow gauge and broad gauge railways tracks are still operational. A unique aspect about the Gwalior narrow gauge is that, the width of the track is smallest among all the narrow gauge tracks in India. Gwalior is well connected via train services to all parts of the country, including direct trains to Mumbai, Delhi, Kolkata (Howrah), and Chennai. Best Time To Visit Gwalior Gwalior has a sub- tropical climate with hot summers from late March to early July, a humid monsoon season from late June to early October and a cool dry winter from early November to late February. The best season to visit the city is between late October to early March. The monsoon paints the city green and the lakes and dams in surrounding of the city turns into a great escape for water sport.

Sight Seeing In Gwalior Gwalior Fort Standing on a steep mass of sandstone, Gwalior fort is an ever-present sight which overlooks the whole city. A steep road winds upwards to the fort, flanked by statues of Jain tirthankaras which have been carved into the rock face. The magnificent outer walls of the fort still stand, two miles in length and 35 feet high. This imposing structure inspired Mughal Emperor Babar to describe it as the pearl amongst the fortresses of Hind. Within the fort are further marvels of medieval architecture. Man Mandir Palace Built in the 16th century, Man Mandir Palace at Gwalior occupies a significant place in Indian history. Worn by the passage of time, the interior of the palace is now nearly empty. However, the charming tiles which adorn the exterior of the palace and the intricately carved stone walls of the chambers are features not to be missed. Saas Bahu Temple A 9th century shrine, Saas Bahu temple in the fort attracts not only devotees but also tourists with its artistic value. Although one might be tempted to think that these temples are named after saas (mother in law) and bahu (daughter in law), it is actually a shortened version of sahastra bahu, a name of Lord Vishnu. These temples are situated adjacent to each other, the larger of the two particularly notable for its beautiful carvings and sculptures. Teli Ka Mandir A lofty structure of about 100 feet, Teli Ka Mandir in Gwalior Fort distinguishes itself from the other compositions of its time because of its unique architecture. Though the roof of the temple holds a Dravidian look, the sculptures are typically north Indian. The temple architecture displays Indo-Aryan and Nagara influences and it is believed to be the oldest construction in the fort. Gurudwara Data Bandi Chhod Gurudwara Data Bandi Chhod is a memorial constructed in the memory of Guru Har Gobind Sahib, the 6th Sikh Guru. History states that Guru Hargobind Sahib was imprisoned in the premises by Jahangir for over two years. During the time of release of the Guru, he also wanted 52 Hindu kings, who were his fellow prisoners, to be released. The Gurudwara was constructed inside the fort in 1970. Made up of marble and colourful stained glass exteriors, the Gurudwara is a significant Sikh pilgrimage site and is visited by many tourists each year.

Other Tourist Attractions The Scindia Chhatri The Chhatris of the Scindias stand on Heritage road near Jaivilas Palace. The whole campus is serene, beautiful and refreshing. In the Chhatri complex there are also three temples made of sandstone. These temples are dedicated to Radha Krishna, Rama and Vishnu. The atmosphere here is one peace and tranquillity. Tomb of Mohammad Ghaus Sun Temple The Tomb of Mohammad Ghaus is a huge sandstone square structure made in the 16th century. Mohammad Ghaus was a Sufi saint and teacher who is said to have helped Barbar in the capture of Gwalior fort. The temple has been adorned with delicate craftsmanship and is mixture of Lodhi style architecture and Gujarati ornamentation. An added attraction of the palace is the assembly of musicians and singers singing semi- religious songs in the spirited style of ghazal singers. Surya Mandir, or Sun Temple, Gwalior is an important destination in the historic city of Gwalior and frequented by numerous pilgrims and tourists every year. Constructed in 1988 by G.D Birla, the famous industrialist of India, it is influenced by the famous Sun Temple at Konark in Orissa. The Surya Mandir in Gwalior is architecturally fascinating and has a beautiful sculpture of Lord Surya in the temple premises. It has captivating exteriors of red sandstone and spectacular interiors of white marble. Tomb of Tansen Mahraja Bada In the same campus as the Tomb of Mohammad Ghaus, one may also see the marble tomb of Mian Tansen. Tansen was a prominent Indian musician and great follower of Mohammad Ghaus, hence his internment near the tomb of the saint. Musicians from all over assemble here to take part in the Tansen music festival which is held every year during the Winter Season. Maharaj Bada or Jiwaji Chowk, with its large square, municipal market building and food and drink stands is an important and central area of Gwalior town. At its heart is a beautiful garden with a statue of Maharaja JayajiRao.
