Kenya and Tanzania Safari DAY BY DAY ITINERARY safari in style 888.658.7102 info@deeperafrica.com www.deeperafrica.com Asilia OVERVIEW: KENYA AND TANZANIA Just in case you come but once to this amazing continent, take the time to become acquainted with its traditional safari lands. This safari gives you an unhurried taste of the region that sprawls along the border between Tanzania and Kenya all one kingdom to the herds that migrate back and forth across it. This journey is beautifully balanced between observation and activity, luxury and adventure. All accommodations are upscale, allowing you to relax and enjoy your time in the wild. Begin your safari in some of the most exquisite natural locations in Tanzania s Northern Circuit. Experience the tree climbing lions of Lake Manyara, the Big Five in Ngorongoro Crater, and the elephant rich Tarangire. Cross the border and find yourself in the majestic Chyulu Hills, home to Campi ya Kanzi, a recognized leader in community development tourism. Conclude your journey on the sprawling savannas of the Maasai Mara where the migration takes center stage. Safaris in Style with Deeper Africa Safaris in Style are an African original. Camps set in remote and unique ecosystems where the wildlife is spectacular. Lodges where service standards are high, food is elegant, and the décor is unique. No humans for miles, just wilderness and wildlife. Learn by going, seeing, and doing, a bush guide at your elbow. Do it once; do it right. Be in the best camps. Have the best guides. Return transformed, having come face to face with nature.

DAY 1 MACHWEO ARUSHA Machweo Arrive at Kilimanjaro International Airport. A Deeper Africa driver will be waiting for you. Look for him holding a sign with your name on it after you clear customs. Enjoy the short drive to Arusha, Tanzania. If the weather is right, you may catch a glimpse of the legendary Mount Kilimanjaro on your way. You ll be overnighting at the gorgeous Machweo on the outskirts of Arusha. Machweo is renowned for its stylish accommodations and great food. In addition to serving top notch cuisine, the kitchen at Machweo serves as a training ground for local Tanzanian youth, many of whom lived on the streets before joining Chef Axel Jansen s program. Over years of guidance and training, students learn skills inside and out of the kitchen in order to survive and thrive as independent adults. After completing their training at Machweo, the students have the skills to earn and retain jobs as chefs at top establishments in the safari industry. Swimming Pool Wifi

DAY 2 THE HIGHLANDS NGORONGORO CONSERVATION AREA Depart the busy streets of Arusha for the mist covered vistas of the Ngorongoro Conservation Area. You ll climb up to an elevation of about 7,500 feet (2,286 meters) as you drive along the crater rim. If the skies are clear, you ll be able to stop at the scenic overlook for one of the most breathtaking views in East Africa the Ngorongoro caldera. As you move higher, you ll notice the lush vegetation turning into rolling hills that mirror a scene from the Scottish highlands. This area is the home of the Maasai people and the hills are dotted with their traditional homesteads. You ll likely catch a glimpse of young Maasai herders guiding their livestock along the dusty roads. Swimming Pool Wifi The Highlands redefines the Ngorongoro experience by focusing on authentic engagement with the local Maasai community. It s distinct domed tents mirror the design of Maasai homes and the camp itself is staffed entirely with locals. This afternoon, you will have the opportunity to go to a local village to meet with Maasai warriors and their families. Watch as the cattle and sheep come in to pasture for the evening and take a tour of a family home. The children you meet are often eager to play and take pictures with visitors. Asilia KENYA AND TANZANIA SAFARI 888.658.7102

DAY 3 THE HIGHLANDS NGORONGORO CONSERVATION AREA Enjoy breakfast on the Highlands outdoor deck which overlooks captivating views of old calderas. Afterwards, begin the descent into the Ngorongoro Crater. The Crater is an expansive environment inside an extinct volcano, and mornings here are a special time as dawn brings a wave of wildlife activity. Between 20,000 and 30,000 animals wander the Crater floor. The Crater ecosystem showcases an astonishing microcosm of East African wildlife environments: grasslands, wetlands, acacia forest, and soda lake environments. The Crater floor is mostly grasslands, providing excellent wildlife visibility and a wonderful opportunity for photography. Zebra, wildebeest, and gazelle mingle together, while herds of buffalo graze in the long grasses. Bull elephants and rhino are often seen feeding in green marshes, as are plentiful hyena. The lakes and marshes are home to exotic waterfowl. Hippos lounge in the water holes, and it is not uncommon to see lions. While wildlife viewing, you ll have a cooler in your Land Cruiser stocked with water, snacks, and your favorite sodas. Swimming Pool Wifi Enjoy a picnic lunch by the hippo pools. In the evening, head back to the lodge for dinner. For those who enjoy active exploration, consider arranging a scenic nature walk around the Highlands with your guide. Asilia KENYA AND TANZANIA SAFARI 888.658.7102

DAY 4 OLIVER S CAMP TARANGIRE NATIONAL PARK Asilia Africa Today you ll travel south to Oliver s Camp, which is located in a remote section of Tarangire National Park. This area of the park is an unspoiled wilderness zone far away from other lodges or camps. Off-road game driving, walking safaris, and night wildlife viewing are all allowed here. As water sources dry up in the park after the end of the rainy season, animals migrate to the only permanent water available: the nearby Tarangire River and the Silale Swamp system. Huge numbers of zebras make up the majority of the herds in Tarangire. Wildebeest, buffalo, and antelope are found as well. Tarangire boasts one of the largest and most conspicuous elephant populations in East Africa. The population continues to recover from the devastating effects of poaching in the nineteen-eighties. Spend several hours surrounded by the herds, and you cannot help but feel a little wiser. Alcohol & Beverages Tarangire is also known for its abundant baobab trees, most of which are over 600 years old. As you settle in for a sundowner, the dark silhouettes of towering baobabs come alive against the background of the fiery African sky.

DAY 5 OLIVER S CAMP TARANGIRE NATIONAL PARK Asilia Africa Oliver s Camp is located close to the stunning, rarely visited Silale Swamps. This area hosts lesser and greater kudu animals seldom seen in the rest of northern Tanzania. Southern Tarangire is also a birder s paradise due to the wide variety of habitats and food sources. More than 550 bird species have been recorded in Tarangire. Set your wildlife viewing schedule with your guide, with options for either a picnic in the bush or lunch at Oliver s Camp. Tarangire is more than just elephants and baobab trees. The park has a range of different habitats, from grassland and woods in the north to low hills, scrub and swamplands in the south. This mix of habitat is incredibly diverse and not found anywhere else along the northern safari circuit; therefore, you will find a wide variety of animals to view. It s not likely you will go long without seeing grazing herds of zebras and gazelle, giraffes picking at the leaves on the tree tops or baboons and vervet monkeys grooming in the bushes. Alcohol & Beverages Night wildlife viewing drives can be scheduled at this camp.

DAY 6 OLIVER S CAMP TARANGIRE NATIONAL PARK Asilia Africa Oliver s Camp offers the unique opportunity to leave the vehicle behind and share the earth with Tarangire s wildlife. Walking safaris are guided by experienced in-residence walking guides and are also accompanied by an armed ranger. While animals are usually spotted on walking safaris, the goal is not to get as close as possible to the wildlife, but rather to observe their undisturbed natural behavior. This is the only area in Tarangire where tracking and spotting skills can be learned on foot. Alcohol & Beverages

DAY 7 CAMPI YA KANZI CHYULU HILLS TRIBAL LAND After at Oliver s Camp, you ll take a morning drive from Tarangire National Park to the Kenyan border crossing at Namanga. Once you clear customs, your Tanzanian guide will be able to drive you over the Kenyan border to the Namanga bush strip. There you will meet up with the Campi ya Kanzi bush pilot. Enjoy the half hour bush flight from Namanga to the Chyulu Hills, or as Hemingway called them: the Green Hills of Africa. Transportation to Campi ya Kanzi lodge will be waiting for you upon your landing. The Italian owners of the lodge, Luca Belpietro and Antonella Bonomo, will meet with you soon after you arrive. Enjoy lunch as you work with them to craft your ideal safari activities. You ll spend three days in their capable hands. Alcohol & Beverages Campi ya Kanzi has a wide range of daily activities for you to choose from during your stay including morning or afternoon wildlife viewing in a Land Cruiser, walking safaris escorted by a guide, bird watching, and Chyulu National Park excursions. Unique activities to this location include horseback riding, visiting the home of your tracker to learn more about Maasai culture, star gazing with astronomers, and massages at the spa. Finally, enjoy the most wonderful Italian cuisine in the bush and views of Kilimanjaro from the deck of your Campi ya Kanzi tent. Campi Ya Kanzi

DAY 8 CAMPI YA KANZI CHYULU HILLS TRIBAL LAND Campi Ya Kanzi Campi ya Kanzi is part of a unique partnership with the Maasai tribal council of the Kuku Group Ranch, which is 280,000 acres of land in the Chyulu Hills. The Maasai have participated in all stages of the development of Campi ya Kanzi including building the lodge and guest houses, as well a managing the camp. All of the buildings have been built with local materials for the lowest environmental impact. Vegetables are grown organically, without the use of pesticides or chemical fertilizers. All water is recycled through lava filters and used to feed a waterhole and wildlife. There is also incredible biodiversity in the Chyulu Hills. Here, you will be able to experience most of the varied ecosystems of Kenya including mountain, forest, grasslands, green river woodlands, bush, and savanna. About 63 different mammals and 400 bird species are found on the ranch including: elephants, rhinos, leopards, lions, and buffalo. Alcohol & Beverages Ultimately, Campi ya Kanzi has two goals: treat you to the most memorable vacation of your life, while helping the Maasai preserve their wildlife and cultural heritages. Tourist dollars are used by the local community to support a primary school on the Group Ranch, a medical clinic for the local community, and to compensate tribal people who have incurred losses through damage by wildlife through the Simba Project.

DAY 9 CAMP YA KANZI CHYULU HILLS TRIBAL LAND Campi Ya Kanzi Campi ya Kanzi have been recognized within the ecotourism community as the winner of many ecotourism awards including the 2015 Positive Luxury Award, 2014 Global Ecosphere Retreat, 2008 Condé Nast World Savers Award, and many other honors. In the words of actor Edward Norton, board member of the Campi ya Kanzi Maasai Wilderness Conservation Trust, They are doing everything right, approaching conservation as an issue of addressing the needs of the people in a sustainable way. They have totally moved beyond the old idea that used to be the under pinning of the environmental movement put a line around the best places and protect them from the people. Alcohol & Beverages... Campi ya Kanzi were the only people saying These lions have been studied for 40 years but their populations are still crashing because nobody is focusing on the question of how do we make these lions more economically valuable to the Maasai alive than dead. I think this is where 21st conservation is heading... and I wanted to work with people thinking this way... so if you re interested in the global struggle for sustainability, this is right on the front lines and very cutting edge.

DAY 10 REKERO CAMP MAASAI MARA GAME RESERVE Asilia Africa Morning bush flight from Campi ya Kanzi to Ol Kiombo bush strip in the Maasai Mara. Rekero staff will be waiting for you at the bush strip. You ll begin wildlife viewing as soon as you enter the Mara, traveling the distance to Rekero Camp and arriving in the early afternoon for lunch. The Maasai Mara is the northern section of the Serengeti. In the Maasai language, the word Serengeti means endless plain. This vast savanna grassland extends southward into Tanzania for over five thousand square miles, forming one of the world s largest wildlife refuges. This is land as it was in the beginning: no fences, no settlements just a perennial migration of wildlife. In a journey that dates back through time, these herds of animals (currently estimated at 1.25 million) follow the seasonal rains, traveling north into the Mara from Tanzania and instinctually moving with the seasonal rainfalls. They sometimes migrate as much as 300 miles per year. Wildlife is allowed to roam freely across the Kenyan and Tanzanian borders. Alcohol and Beverages

DAY 11 REKERO CAMP MAASAI MARA GAME RESERVE The annual migration is what makes the Mara famous. The herds gather in the hundreds of thousands on the plains during July through early November. The herds are drawn into the northern Serengeti region by areas of greater rainfall, where the grasses grow taller and stay greener longer. The migration includes vast herds of wildebeest, but zebra and Thomson s gazelles are also sighted. The herds remain in the Mara for up to four months, trampling the grass, grunting, and stampeding across the Mara River in search of fresh land for grazing. It is this superabundance of prey that accounts for the Mara s big predator populations. Alcohol and Beverages

DAY 12 REKERO CAMP MAASAI MARA GAME RESERVE At Rekero Camp, you ll have the opportunity to learn about and observe human-wildlife conflicts and the greatest challenges facing the stability of the Serengeti migratory herds. In most other areas of Africa, major wildebeest herds have died out due to the ever-expanding human populations which demand water resources as well as land for agriculture and domestic livestock. Human need for land at the edges of the Serengeti and water resources threaten to reduce both the migration range and access to water for animals. The herd s population varies yearly depending on rainfall and availability of grassland. Alcohol & Beverages Asilia Africa

DAY 13 INTERNATIONAL TRAVEL INTERNATIONAL FLIGHT Asilia Africa at Rekero Camp. Enjoy your last morning in the bush with a final wildlife viewing before you move to the Ol Kiombo bush strip for your flight back to Nairobi. The pilot will assist you in getting checked in and getting your luggage boarded on the plane. Arrive early in the afternoon at Wilson Airport. A Deeper Africa driver will be waiting to transport you to a day room at House of Waine. There, you will be able to relax, swim, and enjoy any meals you d like before your international departure from Jomo Kenyatta International Airport.
