RSL Hellenic Sub-Branch RETURNED SOLDIER APOSTRATOS Memorial Hall, 14A Ferrars Place South Melbourne Vic 3205 Phone 9699 9844 October 2015 Dear Veterans, Members and Friends of the RSL Hellenic Sub-Branch Since the last Apostratos edition, our Sub-Branch has been busy with many commemorations and events. In particular, it was great to attend the unveiling of the Lemnos Gallipoli Statue on 8 th August 2015. I am very proud to say our Sub-Branch assisted with the many aspects of the planning and financially supported the project. I congratulate the greater Lemnos Gallipoli Commemorative Committee, for their outstanding work over the last four years in bringing this project to completion. I hope you enjoy this edition of the Returned Soldier Apostratos Newsletter. Steve Kyritsis OAM President Unveiling of The Lemnos Gallipoli Statue - 8 th August 2015 Continued on page 3 1

Three course meal, traditional Greek music by DJ George Dalaras, a great atmosphere not to be missed. Three brothers at war Con, Panos and Argus Livery This article was provided to Apostratos by Florence Livery, daughter of Panos Pino Livery. Panos features on page 693 of the book Greek-Australians in the Australian Armed Forces WW1 & WWII by S. Kyritsis. In 1923 George and Evangelia Livery, along with their two infant children, Con aged 2 and Panos (aka Pino) aged 3 months, migrated to Australia from the Greek Island of Kastellorizo and settled in the North Queensland sugarcane town of Ingham. The family soon expanded to include Argus, born in 1925 and the twins Mosca and Leffy born in 1927. Along came World War 2 and the three older boys could not wait to enlist as soon as they were old enough. Con joined the Militia in 1939, then transferred to the Army in 1941, Pino joined the Navy in 1942 and Argus the Airforce in 1943. This is the only photo we have of any of the brothers together in uniform. On the left is Pino and on the right is Argus. The photo was taken at the 1946 Ingham North Queensland Anzac Day Parade. 2

28 th October 2015 OHI Day As with every year, our Sub-Branch members will begin OHI Day by attending a Church service at the Greek Orthodox Church South Melbourne (9:30am start). There will be two wreath laying ceremonies, firstly 12:00noon at the Australian Hellenic Memorial (Birdwood Ave near the Shrine of Remembrance). At 1.00pm, we lay wreaths within the Melbourne Shrine of Remembrance. We conclude with a light complimentary lunch back at our club rooms. All members are welcome. Unveiling of The Lemnos Gallipoli Statue - Continued from page1 As part of the centenary of ANZAC commemorations, the memorial honouring nurses and soldiers who served on the Greek island of Lemnos during the World War I Gallipoli campaign was unveiled at Foote Street Reserve, Albert Park on Saturday 8 th August. The memorial statue depicts Matron Grace Wilson with an injured soldier on top of a sandstone plinth. The unveiling event included a re-enactment of the arrival of nurses and soldiers on Lemnos, a performance by the Royal Australian Navy Band and traditional Greek dancing performances. Lemnos was the main base for the Gallipoli campaign, with a military base and field hospitals established there in 1915. Over 130 nurses served on Lemnos during the Gallipoli campaign, with others serving on the ships ferrying the wounded from the Gallipoli battlefield. Hundreds of people attended the unveiling of the memorial, including family members of nurses and soldiers who served at Lemnos, including David Weedon, great nephew of Matron Grace Wilson, who oversaw the care for 900 patients in primitive conditions at the Lemnos 3rd Australian General Hospital. Sculptor Peter Corlett, OAM, created the memorial. Continued on page 5 3
