A day by day account of the route Day 1: Arrival in Villabassa/Niederdorf or Toblach/Dobbiaco Starting point: the north-eastern Dolomites; Day 2: to Brixen/Bressanone (approx. 120/90 km) Valley Höhlensteintal, pass Falzarego, Alta Badia, Würzjoch; Day 3: to Bozen/Bolzano (approx. 125/70 km) Valley Grödner Tal, Castelrotto, Bolzano; Day 4: to Bozen/Bolzano - Bozen/Bolzano (approx. 125/75 km) Salorno, Nons valley, and the Mendel pass; Day 5: to Meran/Merano (approx. 95/60 km) Mediterranean climate with exotic plants in Merano; Day 6: to Stilfserjoch/Passo Stelvio (approx. 125 km) Breath-taking view of the Stilfser Joch National Park Day 7: to Jaufenpass - Brixen/Bressanone (approx. 90 km) Trough Passeier valley, over the Jaufen pass; Day 8: Departure Enjoy with a glass of wine under the arches of Brixen;
detailed routing Day 1: Arrival in Niederdorf/Villabassa or Toblach/Dobbiaco Individual arrival at the hotel in Hochpustertal. Free, unguarded public car park near the hotel. Day 2: Villabassa/Dobbiaco - Cortina d Ampezzo - Brixen/Bressanone (approx. 120 km and approx. 2,500 m in altitude or 90 km and approx. 1,800 m Today you cycle from Villabassa/Dobbiaco through the valley Höhlensteintal and the border between South Tyrol and the province Belluno further on to Cortina d Ampezzo. On your programme you find the first famous Dolomites pass: Falzarego. After reaching the highest point you cycle downhill to Alta Badia. Over the Würzjoch you reach the skiing mountain Plose and cycle on to Bressanone. In Bressanone enjoy a roundtrip through the well-kept historic city with the arches and the Dome. Day 3: Bressanone - Gröden/Val Gardena - Kastelruth/Castelrotto - Bozen/Bolzano (approx. 125 km and 2,450 m difference in altitude or approx. 70 km and 1,200 m You leave Bressanone through the valley Eisacktal and cycle to Chiusa. After a bit of warm up you get back to the Dolomites to Ortisei in the well-known valley Grödner Tal. It is famous for woodcarver and its lingual minority Ladin. Over the Panidersattel you reach Castelrotto, the main village under the mighty mountain massif Schlern. Comfortably you cycle downhill to the capital city of South Tyrol Bolzano. This city, where two different cultures meet one another, is expecting you offering various possibilities to spend your time: stroll through the arcades with numerous shops and cafes, visit the fragrant fruit-market or go and have a look at the oldest Tyrolean, the Ötzi in the museum of archaeology. Day 4: Bolzano - Bolzano (approx. 125 km and approx. 1,500 m difference in altitude or approx. 75 km and approx. 400 m This stage takes you to the biggest wine- and fruit growing area of South Tyrol the Etsch valley. From Bolzano you cycle along the river Etsch direction south and get over the province border at Salorno into the Italian speaking Trentino. Through the Nons valley, the home country of the former world champion Maurizio Fondriest, you cycle on the Mendel pass. Enjoy the gorgeous Dolomites panorama and the view on the Rosengarten massif before you cycle back to Bolzano. Day 5: Bolzano - Meran/Merano (approx. 95 km and approx. 1,800 m difference in altitude or approx. 60 km and approx. 1,200 m Today you leave Bolzano through the Etsch valley direction north. From Terlano you get on the Salten with its famous larch woods and on the saddle of the mountains to Merano. Let you spoil yourself with a gentle, Mediterranean climate like Empress Sissi Elisabeth of Austria once did. Blooming parks and promenades with exotic plants, the picturesque alleys and the various art nouveau buildings give this city charms and flair. Worth seeing are the gardens of Schloss Trauttmansdorff a bit above Merano. Day 6: Stilfserjoch/Passo Stelvio (approx. 125 km and approx. 2,000 m The train in Vinschgau the Vinschgerbahn takes you from Merano to Lasa, before you explore the National Park Stilfser Joch. Your way takes you to the highest of the mountain passes in Italy, the Stilfser Joch (2,775 m). The winding course in front of the breath-taking view of the Stilfser Joch National Park also attracts many biking enthusiasts and cyclists. From Stilfser Joch you get in a short downhill ride to Umbrail Pass (2,502 m) and into the Münster valley. Take it easy on your way back to Malles and the Etsch valley to Merano. Day 7: Meran/Merano - Jaufenpass/Passo di Monte Giovo - Brixen/Bressanone (approx. 90 km and approx. 1,800 m difference in altitude) Today you cycle through Passeier valley, over the Jaufen pass and finally reach the Alpine city Vipiteno. The way through the Eisack valley takes you back to the Bishop s city Bressanone. Enjoy the last evening of your road bike week with a glass of wine under the arches of Bressanone. Day 8: Departure Individual departure or extension of your stay.
