GOOD LIFE NEWS From Our President Mary and I pray that all of our Escanaba, MI Report Airstream family are safe and your property sustained no damage. The eye of the storm passed WBCCI International Rally, July 22 29, 2017 just a few miles to the east of us, but we had nothing more than a few branches to clean-up. Lost power for three days, but our generator kept the well and refrigerator going and we had hot showers in the Airstream. Unfortunately the Rock Crusher Canyon Rally had to be canceled. Hopefully this can be rescheduled. The Clerbrook October rally is still a go. Hope to see all of you there. CRACKER CHRISTMAS VOLUNTEER RALLY; NOVEMBER 29 TO DECEMBER 3 Our annual volunteer event to help the Orange County Parks Department set up for and stage Cracker Christmas is a great opportunity for our club to give back to the community. This will be the 18th year for this partnership. During the week club members help prepare and decorate the vintage houses, set up tents and chair for event staff and volunteer areas, and anything the park needs help with. Saturday and Sunday we handle vendor parking, docent the house, act as greeters and assist the park staff as needed. BUT, it s not all work: happy hours, meals (many provided by the park), free time to explore this unique park, and our annual installation banquet. There is no charge for this event. Email Jeff Krabel at jk62gt@gmail.com or phone or text to (352) 573-0489 to make your reservations. MY TRAVELS THROUGH CANADA AND MAINE, SUMMER 2017 Alumapalooza I made plans to go to Alumapalooza at Jackson Center at the end of May. Since I was going that far North, why not just keep on going, so I did. First stop after Alumapalooza was to Can-Am RV in Ontario. Andy Thomson installed sway bars, a braking system, and a new hitch on my Bambi. I didn t think I really needed them but after watching his presentation on the benefits of such, I decided it was a good life insurance policy Next, after making it through Toronto traffic, I headed east to the capital, Ottawa, where I spent a few days in a provincial park in Gatineau being eaten alive by black flies and mosquitos. They had just finished up a very rainy season. The park was beautiful regardless and Ottawa was busy preparing for both Canada Day July 1 and the 150th year anniversary of Canada, so lots of history and excitement there. And of course, being the beginning of summer, everything was being repaired. Ahh those blue tarps and scaffolding. On then to Montreal to enjoy the old French city and all of its beautiful buildings and streets. My campground, Amerique Montreal, was comfortably nice and the owner, of course, was from Florida too. Many Canadians I met in this area come to Florida, especially Dunedin, for the winter and Spring training with the Blue Jays. From there I went to Quebec City. Oh my! What a fabulous city. The French history and ambiance is even more significant there. The streets make you feel as if you are in a little French town. The food, flower-lined streets, smells, beverages, music, etc. and the miles I walked exploring the city made it my favorite Canadian city. I saw a major bicycle race, climbed numerous steps, explored forts and city walls. I almost got my truck locked into an underground garage for the night until I pushed the right buttons at the gate and got someone to answer me, albeit in French, and let me in to get it out. Next day I parked in an outside lot! My campground, Camping de La Joie, was a bit out of town but it also looked over the city from atop the mountain where it was located. Final tourist stop was Parc de la Chute- Montmorency. These falls are taller than Niagara and you can walk to them. I had underestimated the length of time I needed to spend in each area as I planned my trip. Luckily, it was not a busy time yet so I was able to extend and rebook campgrounds all through Canada without penalty! Montmorency Falls From Quebec I headed to the coast through New Brunswick to the remarkable Bay of Fundy. I stayed in the National Park campground there and got to explore the amazing tides at Hopewell PAGE 4

got to explore the amazing tides at Hopewell Rocks. Then on to Prince Edward Island. Loved it! Drove the entire coastline north, south and west. The drive had a different view at every turn. The fishing villages were colorful. Lighthouses abounded. Harbors were spectacular, and camping well look! And the seafood was plentiful and tasty. Sunset Point Campground Cabot Beach Provincial Park, PEI From there I took the ferry to Nova Scotia, then up to Cape Breton and the breathtaking Cabot Trail drive around the headlands. Stayed in Cape Breton Highlands Baddeck, met new folks, and lots of eating, drinking, and hiking to make up for it all. The weather was perfect. Cool nights & warm days. Went to the usual must-see spots: Lunenburg and Peggy s Cove in the south (which was fogged in all three days there) and Fortress of Louisburg near Baddeck. July 1st in Halifax was Canada Day which made the city feel like one gigantic fair or party festival. A great time was had by all. Now it was time to head back into the good ol USA in time for 4th of July. Got to Lubec, Maine for that celebration. Sunset Point Campground was befitting for its name. Wonderful small town parade with a typical NE feel to it. Floats were anything goes. What fun! And just outside of Lubec, and back into Canada, is Campbello Island and the Roosevelt compound there. Such history. Another must see if you re ever up there. Especially Tea with Eleanor. After Lubec I headed to Castine, Maine. A small town on Penobscot Bay, it is one of the oldest towns in America, founded in 1613. It has the oldest continuously running post office. The towns streets are lined with massive elms, most of the houses date back to the 1700 s, and the people are so friendly. I stayed there 3 weeks with some folks I had met a few years ago in the Keys, and they said if you re ever up this way, you re welcome to stay as long as you want in our trailer park, full hookups. (Never make me an offer I can t refuse.) From there I was able to explore the Maine coast at my leisure. Acadia National Park and all the surrounding areas, Moosehead Lake region, summer festivals, lobster boat races, and all sorts of things Maine. Finally, sadly, leaving there, headed home via Ogunquit, through New Hampshire, Vermont, New York, to get to I-81 and south. I was gone 70 nights, traveled 9,980 miles in the truck and put 6,800 miles on Rosie. It was an experience I wasn t sure I d be able to do alone for that length of time, but I did it, and safely. Now I m ready for the West and north to Alaska! -Judy Barrett PAGE 5

REEDS CELEBRATE A MILESTONE Gerald & Meriam Reed celebrated their 50th Wedding Anniversary, June 9 with a sit down dinner at the Indigo Lakes Club House with family and friends. There were power point presentations, toasts, speeches, and music to dance by. They then traveled in the Airstream Land Yacht to Madera Beach KOA for their 50th Anniversary Honeymoon. They spent time on the beach, fished, went to the In July the Reed s went on a cruise on the Norwegian Escape with their grandchildren and their daughter Michelle. It s not like traveling in the Airstream but they had a wonderful time. Art District Museum for Glass Art and just relaxed. Such a wonderful life Airstreaming is. GIGI FEELS THE WIND IN HER HAIR I recently posted this pic of our dachshund Gigi on social media and it made quite the stir. Hundreds of likes and counting. It was taken recently as we drove the winding, twisty roads to Virginia Highland Haven, where we have recently become shareholders. The photo seems to speak volumes about the thrill of the open road, wind in your hair, exploring the beauty of our countryside. As summer winds down, we are counting 7,000 miles since leaving Mystic Springs in May at our last rally. Our New England tour for three months was superb. And now we are loving the mountains and music of the Blue Ridge. Next stop after VHH is Fort Clinch in September. Excited! Not been yet. But we are really excited for this years line up of our Florida Club s rallies. Our goal for this year is to attend every one. Sure hope to see y all there too. We just have too much fun. -Mary Anne Swegles PAGE 6

2018 RALLY SCHEDULE Attention Florida Airstream Club Members. We are in the process of setting up our 2018 Rally Schedule. We are looking for some volunteers who would like to share their favorite campground with their fellow club members by hosting a rally next year. Our club is only as good as the people in it. I believe we have a great club full of wonderful people that like to have fun in the great outdoors. For those who are apprehensive about hosting a rally, don t give it a thought. We have plenty of members who have put on rallies in the past that are willing to help others put one on too. We also have a basic checklist to help get you started. Most importantly, when you volunteer to host a rally, select a date that works best with your calendar. The hosts are the go to folks for the attendees and the campground. The hosts help ensures a smooth running rally, but they don t do all the work. Other members are willing to step-up and host a dinner, activity, tour, etc. and are just waiting to be asked. To date we have the following rallies penciled in on our 2018 Rally Schedule. There are no rules that say we can t have more than one rally per month, so don t let that stop you from hosting. As in the past, we will present the Rally Schedule for approval at our October Members meeting. Month Dates Location Activity Hosts January February March TBA Ft. Please send all your rally dates, location, etc. to Ron Allen (email: ronchrisallen@bellsouth.net, phone: 904-534-9896) by October 1, 2017. We will need this information compiled for our Annual Meeting and to submit to be published in the Blue Beret to help everyone plan their travels for next year. -Ron Allen PAGE 8

SUNSHINE LIST Frank Carson writes to say, After 6 weeks of being in a sling, I finally get to start therapy which could last up to 26 weeks. Still living in a recliner most of the day and night. Had to buy an electric operated La-Z-Boy since my arm is not able to operate the slde handle on our chairs. The only problem was that Joan fell in love with the matching sofa. It comes tomorrow. Joan will be happy not to get up all hours of the day and night to let me out of the chair. The doctor thinks the cadaver tendons seem to be holding my shoulder in place. The rotator cuff is repaired and hopefully in working order. With all this, they also found that I might need a pacemaker since my heart rate has dropped. We have members who are ill, on chemotherapy, undergoing radiation treatments, awaiting medical procedures, and all trying hard to recover. Keep them in your prayers, and everyone travel safe, enjoy the good life, and stay healthy in the days ahead. There were no other cares and concerns reported to your editor for this edition. Please let our Sunshine Committee Chair, Joan Carson (321) 704-2568 or fc23343@aol.com, know of anything that you would like to be to be printed here.
