AMAZON The world s green lungs have always enticed people to their alleged treasures. Explorers went in search of El Dorado, highland settlers in search of cultivable land, loggers come looking for wood and tourists want to explore its most valuable commodity-- the natural rainforests with their enormous variety of plants and wildlife. The Peruvian Amazon comprises a huge area of jungle reaching from the eastern slopes of the Andes to the borders with Ecuador, Colombia, Brazil and Bolivia. Tambopata National Reserve is one of the last relatively accessible, virgin tropical rainforests in the world. Remote and pristine, this region is only a 35-minute flight away from Cusco. The Reserve, a 274,690-hectare area (678,774-acre), offers a wealth of biodiversity, as well as magnificent natural landscapes. Considered to be a Global Mega Diversity Hotspot by Conservation International (ENGO), nature in this region has remained intact largely due to limited road access and construction, and the creation of several major National Parks with a total area of more than 3.6 million hectares (9 million acres) set aside for protection. This protected area is home to an enormous variety of plants and animals, including a large number of species that are only rarely found elsewhere in the Amazon due to poaching and deforestation. Examples include tapirs, spider monkeys, jaguars, white-lipped peccaries, different types of monkey and caimans.

EXCURSIONS Canopy walk Twilight River excursion Trail system Sandoval Lake Take a 15-minute walk along the trail towards the Canopy Walkway Interpretation Center. A short briefing will be given about the project s history, structure, and the highlights of this unforgettable adventure. You will ascend the first tower and walk through the treetops of the giant Amazon Basin, along hanging bridges. Views, virtually unimaginable from down below and possible only from the jungle s canopy, are revealed from the vantage point of this veritable network of towers, bridges, and platforms suspended in the midst of incredibly lush vegetation. Be on the lookout for different colorful birds and learn about the interaction between flora and fauna at various levels of the forest and their respective places in this unique ecosystem. During this guided afternoon motorized canoe ride, you will witness an incomparably enchanting jungle sunset. As the night starts setting in, you get to see a veritable transformation from daytime to nocturnal environment. Daytime animals and birds are replaced by species seen only at night. As you behold the sight of this changed paradise all around you, you will search for nightjars, owls, capybaras and caimans, and learn about their habits in the process. In addition, on a clear night the stars in the southern hemisphere skies shine especially brightly. Unforgettable! Take a walk to one of the trails that extends approximately 7,3 kilometers (4,5 miles) and you will discover the incredible realm of the Amazon rainforest. The trails offer an excellent introduction to the environment of the jungle, as you walk past exotic rainforest trees, such as the kapok tree (Ceiba pentandra) and the beautiful ficus. Look down and spot the tiny lizards that rustle the leaves as they dart about on the forest floor. Gaze at the treetops and be amazed with the arena for bird watching. Observe the insect life and learn about the interpretation of the primary and secondary rainforest components, as well as the human impact and the relevance of the rainforests of the world. A 30-minute ride on a motorized canoe takes you to Tambopata National Reserve. You will enjoy the one and a half hour walk along three kilometers of jungle trails to reach Lake Sandoval. A huge variety of birds, butterflies and other species can be observed along the way. Sit back in a dugout canoe, as it gently glides on this beautiful, mirror-like oxbow lake that is home to the endangered giant river otter, as well as red howler monkeys, macaws, prehistoric hoatzins, also called shanshos, pointtailed palm creepers and side-neck turtles. The lake provides one of the most beautiful backdrops for canoeing in Peru. 3

EXCURSIONS Gamitana creek A motorized canoe ride is followed by a long walk before reaching Gamitana creek. The sights, scents and sounds of the jungle will surround you as you walk for one and a half hours through endless rainforests along the banks of this winding, darkwater creek that is home to piranhas, caimans, turtles, and an abundance of brightly colored birds. When you arrive at the Sanipanga embarkation point, you board a dugout canoe that takes you downstream to the Gamitana Model Farm in about an hour. As always in the jungle, you appreciate the rich plant and animal life along the way. Enjoy a short guided walk to learn more about this Amazonian model farm and get the chance to make your own plantain flour used to make delicious bread for breakfast at the lodge. Rainforest by night There is nothing like bearing witness to the difference between day and night in Amazonia. Venture into the forest at night and experience the mystery of animal activity that awakens in the rainforest after dark. Listen to nocturnal forest sounds and spot species that only emerge at night, their daytime counterparts having disappeared, as if by magic, for a few short dark hours. Inkaterra Butterfly House The Inkaterra Butterfly House is located near Puerto Maldonado s Airport. Butterflies are raised in the laboratory, where the larvae of different species are grown; a large garden offers the opportunity for observing butterflies in a natural habitat. Peru boasts the greatest number of butterfly species in the world, with over 3,700 identified species accounting for 20 percent of the species found anywhere on earth. Additional activities available upon request. 4

HACIENDA CONCEPCIÓN BY INKATERRA Hacienda Concepción comprises 819 hectares of primary and secondary rainforests, including an oxbow lake. It is home to diverse ecosystems, tropical plants and wildlife. The lodge is located only 5.5 mi. downstream from the city of Puerto Maldonado and it acts as buffer zone between the Tambopata National Reserve and the shores of the vast Madre de Dios River, making the location of Hacienda Concepción a privileged site. To help you experience the wonders of this enchanting place, Hacienda Concepción offers you different excursions in three types of all-inclusive packages. RAINFOREST EXPEDITIONS Rainforest Expeditions is a Peruvian Ecotourism company established in 1989. It operates three comfortable lodges in the Tambopata National Reserve. Programs offer integration of nature and culture in the Amazon rainforest aimed at providing a good overview of life in the rainforest. Refugio Amazonas Located in a 200-hectare private reserve within the buffer zone of the Tambopata National Reserve, four hours from the Puerto Maldonado airport. It is ideal for science enthusiasts, soft adventurers and families. Refugio Amazonas Posada Amazonas Offers ample opportunities to see wildlife such as squirrel monkeys, howler monkeys, parrots and macaws. The lodge is also home to a family of giant river otters. Amazon Villa A private bungalow designed to provide you with privacy, creature comforts, and exclusive activities that enhance an already unforgettable Amazon jungle experience. It is ideal for romantic getaways or as an exclusive hideaway. Tambopata Research Center The most remote lodge in the Amazon. It is an excellent headquarters for in depth explorations of Amazonian nature and wildlife because of its remote location in uninhabited wilderness housing stable populations of endangered wildlife, the small scale of its infrastructure and operations and the presence of researchers and naturalist guides. 12
