2nd Circular: Call for Registration Desorption 2012 Wissenschaft fängt eigentlich erst da an interessant zu werden, wo sie aufhört. Actually, science only starts to get interesting where it ends. (Justus Liebig 1803-1873) Desorption 2012, June 3-7, 2012 Rauischholzhausen, Germany 1. FOCUS OF THE CONFERENCE The conference targets the development of bioanalytical mass spectrometry technology. Mechanisms of ion and neutral desorption are investigated in order to define the most efficient ways of producing intact molecular ions and, at the same time, of inducing controlled fragmentation for structural analysis and substance identification. A significant part of the conference is devoted to fundamental research on desorption processes, also dealing with the necessary instrumentation to produce, detect, identify and topologically visualize molecular ions. Applications of these technologies in the fields of biology, medicine, plant research, surface analysis and others are targeted, both in bulk analytical strategies and in biomolecular mass spectrometry imaging.

Desorption 2012 is an interdisciplinary conference in the tradition of the IFOS (Ion Formation from Organic Solids) symposia of the 1980s. This conference series began 34 years ago as a workshop on desorption induced by high energy particles (MeV particles), in Marburg, Germany, in 1978. The interdisciplinary Conference DESORPTION started as a follow-up in 1992 (Burg Waldeck, Germany), expanding the topic from particle bombardment methods to other methods of ion formation, including laser desorption and the upcoming MALDI method. The current meeting, will continue the long and successful tradition of these meetings by bringing together scientists from all fields of science and from all over the world in a relaxed natural environment of an english-styled park to discuss most recent developments in the field. DESORPTION 2012 is to be held June 3-7, 2012 at the Rauischholzhausen Conference Centre of Justus Liebig University, very close to Marburg, where the story of the DESORPTION conferences began. The conference will host about 80 international participants from all over the world, including Brazil, Canada, Denmark, France, Germany, Russia, Sweden, Switzerland, the United Kingdom, and the USA. Participation of young researchers and students is highly encouraged. 2. TOPICS The sessions will tackle the subjects of the previous conferences with a particular focus on mass spectrometry imaging (MSI) and in situ mass spectrometry methods. One session will be devoted as a Special Feature especially to the latter field, presenting the results of the LOEWE research focus "AmbiProbe" funded by the Hessian Ministry of Science and Arts. Other subjects of the conference include: ESI & MALDI (Electrospray Ionization & Matrix Assisted Laser Desorption Ionisation) Cluster SIMS (Secondary Ionizaton Mass Spectrometry), Nano-SIMS, Massive Cluster Impact ECD & ETD (Electron Capture & Electron Transfer Dissociation) Instrumentation: MS imaging technology, ToF, ion traps, FT, orbital trapping and ion cyclotron resonance technology, ion mobility Mass spectrometry in the operating room & clinical applications of MS MS methods in lipidomics, proteomics, peptidomics, glycomics in animal and plant research Bioinformatics tools and strategies in Systems Biology and Molecular Biomedicine. 3. SOCIAL EVENTS Trips to Giessen are planned for visiting the Liebig Museum (original laboratory of Justus Liebig between 1824 and 1852), the oldest botanical garden of Germany being located at its original place, and the Mathematikum, the world s first mathematical museum and science center. The conference dinner will take place in the Mathematikum on Wednesday evening.

4. LOCATION Schloss Rauischholzhausen is located 30 km northeast of Giessen, 20 km south of Marburg and about 90 km north of Frankfurt airport. Transportation will be organized. Accommodation, lunch and lectures will all be in the castle building. Find more information about the conference venue on our web site. 5. TRAVEL INFORMATION The conference venue, the Castle of Rauischholzhausen is located halfway between the towns of Giessen and Marburg, north to Frankfurt. The closest international airport is Frankfurt International. The easiest way from Frankfurt to Rauischholzhausen is by train to the town of Marburg and then by taxi. Frankfurt International Airport The airport located closest to the venue is Frankfurt International Airport. This is the recommended and most convenient choice. The journey from Frankfurt Airport to Marburg takes just over one hour by train. A single ticket to Marburg currently costs about 20. There are two train stations at Frankfurt Airport. To travel to Marburg you can take a train from either station and change at Frankfurt Main Station ("Frankfurt Hauptbahnhof"). The journey to "Frankfurt Hauptbahnhof" takes 10-15 minutes, the onward journey to Marburg about 75 minutes. From Marburg you can get to the venue either by taxi (recommended) or by bus. Frankfurt/Hahn Airport Various low-cost-airlines (e.g. Ryanair) fly to Frankfurt/Hahn Airport, located about 200 km from Marburg - the name "Frankfurt"/Hahn is deliberately misleading! A bus service connects the airport with the main train station of Frankfurt (the bus leaves every one to two hours; the journey takes about 1:45h). Please check for bus schedules beforehand! The bus stop is directly in front of the airport terminal; the bus ends on the south side of Frankfurt main train station ("Hauptbahnhof"). A single bus ticket currently costs about 13. Once you arrive at the train station, take a train to Marburg (see information above). Cologne/Bonn Airport ("Köln-Bonn") Various scheduled as well as low-cost airlines fly to Airport Cologne/Bonn, located about 200 km from Marburg. From the airport, take the S-13 train (=Rapid Transit Train) to "Köln Hbf" (= Cologne Main Station). From there, take a train to Marburg, either via Troisdorf/Siegen or via Frankfurt (duration of journey: approx. 2:30h). For further information please consult the homepage of the Deutsche Bahn. Once in Marburg, we again recommend taking a taxi to the Castle of Rauischholzhausen.

6. LANGUAGE English is the official language of the meeting. 7. SCOPE The maximum number of participants is limited by space to about 85 participants, thus early registration is recommended. Participation cannot be guaranteed. 8. DEADLINES Registration: February 29, 2012 Payment: February 29, 2012 Abstracts due: March 31, 2012 9.
