1 MOST SUITABLE AREAS AND TYPES OF ACCOMMODATION The most suitable living areas are Sengiggi and Kuta Lombok (the campus is located in Mataram). These areas are right next to beautiful beaches, and offer different accommodation options from luxurious villas to more affordable hotel accommodation. Staying in Mataram is also an option, especially if you prefer living in the busy capital of Lombok and getting to really know the local way of living. The driving distances in Lombok are so short, that even though the campus is in Mataram, you can choose to stay in almost any part of the island. Depending on the area where you choose to be staying and the level of luxury you expect from your accommodation, be ready to spend anywhere between 100 and 600 euros per month on your accommodation costs. While the cheaper homestays offer monthly deals starting from even less than 100 euros (standard room with a fan and toilet) a nicer homestay or apartment building with a pool, and a fully-furnished and air-conditioned room will likely to cost about 250 to 500 euros per month depending on the area. The total rental price will be the same whether you are one or two people staying, so if you share a room, you can cut the costs down to half. Local houses or nicer villas are also an option, and if you find a nice one to share with your friends, the price per person can often be quite low compared to the nice living standard you will be getting. Rooms/Studios/Apartments Kost/Kos/Terima Kos(t) Finding a room or a studio is one possibility. They are widely available. Most of them do not have webpages so it s not possible to book them in advance. It s easiest to make the rental agreement after arriving in Lombok. The majority of this category of accommodation is usually referred locally as Kost, Kos, or Terima Kos(t). There is a broad range of quality and prices but for ones with A/C and Wifi and sometimes a pool they typically are 100-200 EUR per month. Especially Senggigi, Mataram, and along the beach front road from Mataram to Senggigi there are many options. Homestays Homestay is also a wonderful option as it makes it easier to learn the language and really adapt to the Sasak way of life as part of a family. Homestay options provide you with a separate room or a hut in a Sasak family. Don t expect luxury! But the experience you will get from living with a local family will certainly be unforgettable. 2
1.1.1 How to find accommodation Good sources for finding accommodation are the university staff, local real estate agents, other students, blogs, newspaper ads, websites, and bulletin boards in restaurants. Cafés and shops such as Temptations bakery in Senggigi have bulletin boards. It s important to be active and many students find the accommodation of their dreams by driving around in interesting areas and looking for possible housing. Many students find also local agents very helpful. 1.1.2 Local real estate agents Local real estate agents know of many accommodation options. You can contact the agency and they will help you to find the right place to stay. They have a few different options, which would suit you. 1.1.3 Websites You can find many websites, which advertise available villas and apartments in Lombok. Keep in mind that most of the time the prices can be negotiated. It s easiest to agree on the final price face-to-face. The websites of recommended agents: Facebook Groups o Lombok Villas o Lombok Community o Airbnb Several other agents notify of their services on the Facebook group created for your batch so check it regularly. 1.1.4 Newspaper ads Some restaurants distribute the free Lombok Guide newspaper, which has announcements for available villas around Lombok. The prices are often quite expensive, but the ads may be of use for larger groups of students who are looking for accommodation together. 1.1.5 Restaurants and bulletin boards Some restaurants have bulletin boards where you can find announcements for available accommodation. Restaurant owners may have some valuable tips to share. Check for example Temptations Bakery in Green Valley, Senggigi. This is a popular place to hang out especially among expats and exchange students. 1.1.6 Other students or driving around You can get good tips from other international or local students, both from those who have been to Lombok before as well as those who are looking for accommodation at the same time with you. Ask around for helpful hints and roommates! Our student blogs will also provide helpful guidance for finding accommodation. You can find villas, houses or rooms for rent by driving around in the areas and looking around. Everywhere on the road you can find signs such as Villa for rent, House for rent or Room for rent (Kost in Indonesian). Sometimes the ads are also for studios or guesthouses offering rooms on monthly rates. 3
2 GENERAL INFORMATION ABOUT FINDING ACCOMMODATION In Asian cultures, it is common to do business face-to-face. For example, taking care of accommodation arrangements in advance by email may be difficult. This is not something worth worrying about, however. You can settle your housing, the details of the lease and the final price after arriving in Lombok. Remember to check the safety of the area (e.g. security, fenced area, surveillance cameras) and the comfort of the neighbourhood. You ll have a chance to find suitable accommodation in your preferred area during the first few days. Don t forget to make a written agreement about the amount of rent, what it includes and the duration of the lease. It s also a good idea to check the apartment before moving in, write a list of possible faults and take pictures. This list can then be added to your lease as an appendix. Don t forget that it s easiest to sign a lease during office hours, although some exceptions have been made during evenings and weekends. You can contact property owners or real estate agents beforehand by email, but it may take a while to receive an answer and the prices will most likely be higher than when doing business face-to-fac If it s possible to sign the lease on a monthly basis, it s worth looking into as you may be entitled to some discounts. Please take into account that if you sign a lease for the full length of your stay, but wish to change accommodation earlier for some reason, it will be difficult to get your security deposit back. It will be very difficult to end the rental agreement early without losing money. Therefore some students first rent a villa only for e.g. 2 months and then either continue the lease or move to another villa or try out a homestay. Time-limited rent lease is really hard to cancel everywhere in the world. This is the case also in Lombok. Students should carefully consider their accommodation before they want to terminate their lease. While you re checking out future accommodation and latest when signing your lease, remember to find out the policy for incomplete months (for example, if you want to move out before the end of a month). There may be daily or weekly rates or you may be able to make special arrangements with your landlord. However, sometimes paying for a full month can be cheaper than paying for two weeks on a daily basis Most of the students decide to live in luxurious villas. When renting a big villa, students usually need to share a room to get the monthly rate per person low enough for a student budget. The apartments and rooms may be differently equipped even at the same location. Not all the locations offer basic household amenities, e.g. cutlery and cookware. You can ask about them at the reception, but in most cases you will have to buy them at your own expense. Luckily, however, the prices for such products are affordable in Lombok at any larger convenience store or local shop. 4
Electricity, water and Internet might need to be paid for separately on a monthly basis. Extensive use of air conditioner increases your electricity bill, so pay attention to its use from the very beginning. Using AC moderately can substantially reduce your electricity bill. For ecological and economic reasons, AC should be turned off when the apartment is empty and possibly also during the nights. To avoid catching a cold, don t turn the air conditioning too high. 25 28 degrees Celsius is a suitable temperature for nights. A little hassle is a normal part of finding your accommodation. This is mainly due to cultural differences and different ways of doing business in another country. A good sense of humor, a smile, a little patience and trying to understand a different culture will help sort things out. Sometimes it might take up to a week to find long-term accommodation, but that s not uncommon at other exchange locations in other parts of the world either. Short-term accommodation is quite easy to find even without a reservation, e.g. in the area of Mataram. Below we have listed a few options in different areas, both for short-term stay and long-term stay. The long-term rental price for the places with only daily rates mentioned can be negotiated in person. 5
