Landscaping Construction The landscaping construction students from TAFE NSW Padstow and TAFE NSW Yallah took part in the show garden display builds, these builds provide a valuable educational opportunity and real life on-site building scenario. It also offered the students with a valuable unique insight into the challenges that professional landscapers face when working on large projects to tight deadlines. Design skills, teamwork, networking with industry and suppliers, problem solving and project management are just some of the aspects that the students learnt from being involved with the build of the show gardens. The public viewed the amazing workmanship, construction complexity, innovative use of construction materials, innovation and planting. Page 1 of 5
Floristry Floristry students from TAFE NSW Ryde, TAFE NSW Ultimo and TAFE NSW Yallah showcased their creative talents and ideas in the major class competition the TAFE NSW Floral Displays. The creative displays were the centrepiece of the Southee Pavilion for the duration of the show with the visiting public admiring and taking in the student s creativity. This year s Flower and Garden Pavilion theme is Kaleidoscope of Colour with the TAFE NSW students using this same theme as their inspiration for the design and creative works. It was up to the student team s imagination to use this theme as a basis for their design, choice of flowers, arrangement techniques and overall compilation to wow the public. In addition to the TAFE NSW Floral Display competition, there was a number of other individual floristry competitions that TAFE NSW students will be taking part throughout the show period on offer from the RAS. These individual opportunities allows the student to showcase their individual talents, flair, inspiration and vision on a National stage. TAFE NSW Version 1.0 Page 2 of 5 Page 2 of 5
DEADLY SKILLS & HUNTER TRY A SKILL On Wednesday 10 May the Deadly Skills event was staged at TAFE NSW Newcastle in the Design Centre at the campus. The day was an opportunity for Aboriginal and Torres Strait students to attend and be involved with a wide range of activities and have a go at a range of Vocational trades and skills that were on offer. The visiting students also had the opportunity to: Participate in Aboriginal dance and other cultural activities, Meet past and present Aboriginal NRL players from the Newcastle Knights, Meet Australian Jillaroos player/ Indigenous Women s All Stars captain Rebecca Young, Meet prominent Aboriginal elders, artists, craftsman, story tellers and more. The following day was the Hunter Try a Skill at TAFE NSW Newcastle with students attending from the coastal areas, upper and lower hunter regions. The day provided opportunities to explore career options with TAFE NSW staff and industry partners in areas that included beauty therapy, children s services, electronics, health care, hairdressing, industrial design, joinery, painting & decorating, plastering, screen and media, sheetmetal work, signage, vehicle painting and welding. NORTHWEST REGIONAL CAREERS EXPO On Wednesday 17 May the annual Northwest Regional Careers Expo was held at the Tamworth Regional Entertainment and Conference Centre. The event is a major draw card for the surrounding schools from not only Tamworth but the greater New England region that attend the expo to discover what opportunities and careers currently on offer. With over eighty exhibitors in attendance at the expo, there was something on show for all that attended. TAFE NSW had a strong presence with course information, advisors and teaching representatives with hands on opportunities to draw in the large crowds of visiting school students. Opportunities through the WorldSkills Australia competition program was promoted to the students, careers advisors and parents with information and a wide range of regional and national competition projects on display. WESTERN SYDNEY TASTE OF TRADES & CAREERS EXPO The 2017 Western Sydney Taste of Trades and Careers Expo was held on Wednesday 24 and Thursday 25 May at the Penrith Valley Regional Sports Centre. The two day expo provided the opportunity for over 5000 attendees to discover, interact and learn about career options, training providers, course information and speak directly to teachers from a wide range of industries. TAFE NSW was the major exhibitor in the Taste of Trades component of the expo with representation from the animal care and the racing industry, the automotive sector, children s services, client services, construction, design, health, hospitality, metals and engineering and music and entertainment. With the wide mix of trades and skills on offer, all with a hands on component it made for plenty of interest and interaction for the visiting career seekers.
