THE PURPOSE The purpose of Scout camp is to build strength through day-to-day activities of pure Scouting for patrols, troops and most importantly for the individual Scouts. It is the policy of the Sequoyah Council, Boy Scouts of America, to provide the best possible camping experience to all Scouts, regardless of race, creed, nationality or religious preference. CODE OF CONDUCT The Code of Conduct at camp is simply the Scout Oath and Scout Law. If we try to adhere to these guiding principles, everyone will have the maximum amount of fun while at camp. INFORMATION SUBJECT TO CHANGE We have made every effort to include the most up to date information in this guide. However, depending on camp enrollment, staffing, changes in the national BSA program, and / or circumstances beyond our control; the information in this guide may need to be changed. PREPARING FOR CAMP Winter Camp Dates and fees December 27-30, 2017 $125 for youth $60 for Adults Check-in will begin @ 1:00 PM on Wednesday, December 27, 2017. Camp ends on Saturday, December 30 and everyone will need to be out of camp by 9:30 AM. Refund Policy The following policy statement is applicable to all Council and District events where a fee is collected. Written refund requests will be considered only if received in the council office ten (10) days prior to the start of camp. Written refund requests submitted after the event will be considered only for personal illness or family emergencies. No refund requests will be accepted after ten (10) days following the close of camp. A service charge of twenty-five percent (25%) of the full activity fee will be assessed on all refunds. Refund checks will be issued within thirty (30) days following the close of camp. Fees are only transferable within the same activity to a Scout not currently registered for the event. If a refund is due, units will receive the refund as a council check mailed to the contact address on file. Please allow at least 4-6 weeks for delivery. Please note that we cannot offer refunds for Scouts who leave camp early and under no circumstances may any refunds be carried over to the following summer. 4

Class Outlines 1st Class First Aid / Knots Requirements Age Restriction: 11-17 Class Fee: None Max Class Size: None This class will cover the first aid and knots that are required for the First Class rank. This class will only be offered on Thursday evening. Animation Merit Badge Computer or traditional animation tasks that will test a Scout s creativity, artistic skills, and storytelling abilities. Art Merit Badge Age Restriction: 11-17 Class Fee: $5 Max Class Size: 8 Scouts will learn to tell a story using pictures as well as draw an object using a variety of mediums. Automotive Maintenance Merit Badge Enables Scouts to understand why maintenance is required to keep their vehicles in tip-top shape. This class will be offered. Thursday all day. Basketry Merit Badge Age Restriction: 11-17 Class Fee: $5 Max Class Size: 8 Scouts will learn about the glorious world of basketry, including different types of weaves and baskets. Class Outlines BSA Chainsaw Safety Certification Age Restriction: Adults Only Class Fee: None Max Class Size: 6 This program will incorporate safe chainsaw operation and tree felling procedures as outlined by the U.S. Forest Service and the Boy Scouts of America. Chess Merit Badge Teaches Scouts strategic planning, critical thinking, concentration and decision-making skills, as well as, good sportsmanship. This class will be offered once. Thursday afternoon. Thursday afternoon. cultures, channels and Crime Prevention Merit Badge Will learn about the different types of crimes and steps that you, and your family and neighbors, can take to help prevent crime. Cyber Chip Age Restriction: 11-17 Class Fee: None Max Class Size: None To help educate Scouts about being safer online and assist them in promoting community awareness of Internet safety issues. This class will be offered once. Friday morning. Electronics Merit Badge Electronics is the science that controls the behavior of electrons so that some type of useful function is performed. This class will be offered once. Friday morning. Emergency Preparedness Merit Badge Scouts will learn to take care of themselves, their families, and complete strangers in case of emergencies. This is an advanced merit badge, resulting in increased confidence in the event of catastrophic events. This Class will be offered once. All day class on Friday. 10
Fire Safety Merit Badge Class Outlines Scouts will learn to use fire safely and responsibly, how to prevent home fires, and how to handle fire safely, as well as burn prevention, and camping safety. This class will be offered once. Thursday morning. First Aid / CPR Age Restriction: Youth & Adults Class Fee: $25 Max Class Size: 10 This will be certification from the Emergency Care & Safety Institute. This class will be offered once. Thursday All Day. Game Design Merit Badge The Game Design merit badge teaches planning and critical-thinking skills, while introducing Scouts to an industry that s bigger than Hollywood. This class will be offered twice. Thursday morning or Friday afternoon. Geocaching Merit Badge Scouts will learn about GPS Units, geocaching in the US. They will learn how to hide and document a geocache as well as find geocaches. This Class will be offered once. All day class on Friday. Graphic Arts Merit Badge Gives Scouts a look into printing and publishing industries. This class will be offered once. Thursday afternoon. 11
Leave No Trace Workshop Class Outlines Age Restriction: None Class Fee: None Max Class Size: None Participants receive introductory training in the skills and ethics of Leave No Trace. This class will be offered once. Friday evening. NRA Range Safety Officer Certification Age Restriction: Adults Only (21+) Class Fee: $25 Max Class Size: 8 NRA Range Safety Officers are people who possess the knowledge, skills, and attitude essential to organizing, conducting, and supervising safe shooting activities and range operations. There will be an additional $50 fee paid to the NRA as a procession and Certification fee. This class will be offered once. Thursday All Day. Photography Merit Badge Using lighting, composition, depth, color and content to create a lasting memory. Participants will need to bring their own cameras. This Class will be offered twice. Thursday evening or Friday evening. Theater Merit Badge Scouts will learn to appreciate live performances as members of the audience as well as go behind the footlights to see the view from the other side. This Class will be offered twice. Thursday evening or Friday evening. Totin Chip / Firem n Chit Age Restriction: 11-17 Class Fee: None Max Class Size: None Totin Chip - This certification grants a Scout the right to carry and use wood tools. Firem n Chit - This certification grants a Scout the right to carry fire-lighting devices (matches, lighters, etc.) and build campfires. This Class will be offered once. Thursday evening. 12
Class Outlines Signs, Signals & Codes Merit Badge Age Restriction: None Class Fee: None Max Class Size: 8 Learn a number of nonverbal ways we communicate: emergency signaling, Morse code, American Sign Language, braille, trail signs, sports officiating hand signals, traffic signs, secret codes and more. This Class will be offered twice. Friday morning or Friday afternoon. Winchester / NRA Marksmanship Qualification Program - Rifle Age Restriction: None Class Fee: $10 Max Class Size: 12 This is a development program designed as a tool to develop shooting skills. Participants will shoot both rifle and shotgun working toward qualifying for different skill level awards. You can take this class either of the 2 times it is offered. Thursday morning or Thursday afternoon. Winchester / NRA Marksmanship Qualification Program - Shotgun Age Restriction: None Class Fee: $15 Max Class Size: 12 This is a development program designed as a tool to develop shooting skills. Participants will shoot 20 gauge shotguns working toward qualifying for different skill level awards. You can take this class either of the 2 times it is offered. Friday morning or Friday afternoon. Weather Merit Badge Age Restriction: None Class Fee: None Max Class Size: 8 Learn how everyday weather is predicted, about extreme weather such as thunderstorms, tornadoes, and hurricanes, and how to stay safe. This Class will be offered once. Friday Morning Youth Protection / Weather Hazards Training Age Restriction: Adults Only Class Fee: None Max Class Size: 10 This will cover the required Boy Scout Youth Protection Training and the Weather Smart training. How to sign up for Winter Camp and register for classes: Step 1: Go to http://www.tentaroo.com/sequoyah. Step 2: Under the Section on the right side of the screen you will see Create a New Account. Select 2016 Winter Camp from the drop down list. Step 3: Complete all of the information it asks for (you can write your user name and password below so you have it) User Name: Password: Step 4: Click on the Your Roster button at top. Step 5: Click on the +New button at the bottom beside either the Youth Registrations or the Adult Registrations. Step 6: Enter all the information on that page. Step 7: Click on the Save button at the bottom of page (Repeat steps 5-7 for each youth or adult that will be attending camp) Step 8: Click on the Event Registration button at top Step 9: Click on the +New Youth or Adult Registration button. Step 10: Click on the name you want to register in the Choose Participant List. Step 11: Click on the Create Registration button at bottom. Step 12: Fill in any missing information in the add event registration box. Step 13: Click on the Continue to Pick Classes button at the bottom of the page. Step 14: Drag classes from the right side list to the left side (if a class is not in the right side it is not available). Step 15: Click on the Save button at bottom. Step 16: If you are registering more participants (youth or adult) click on the Return to Event button and repeat steps 8-15. If you are finished registering click on the Checkout button at the bottom. Step 17: Enter your payment information then Click on Submit Order button. 14
Arriving At Camp Participants should plan to arrive at Davy Crockett between 1:00-2:45 p.m. on Wednesday, December 27. Arriving as close to 1:00 allows for enough time to get you checked in and assigned to your campsite. Upon arrival to camp, immediately park in the headquarters building parking lot (Do not block the road). Report to the Headquarters building with your medical forms. You will be assigned a campsite during the check-in process. After you have checked-in you can proceed to your campsite to set-up your tent and get settled in. Vehicles are not to be parked in the campsite during Winter Camp. Vehicles will be permitted into the campsites during check-in and check-out (weather permitting), for the purposes of loading and unloading of personal equipment. While driving in camp, please observe the camp speed limit of 5 miles per hour. Individuals with special needs should contact the Council office prior to arrival. For persons requiring mobility assistance, vehicle permits will be issued during check-in. The camp does not furnish transportation for special needs individuals. NO ONE IS ALLOWED TO RIDE IN THE BACK OF PICKUP TRUCKS. Checking out of Camp On Friday morning after breakfast, you will go back to your campsite to break down and pack up your personal equipment. Once you have had your area inspected and your transportation has arrived at camp, you may proceed to the HQ building to check-out (everyone will need to check-out before leaving). Please make arrangements to be picked up before 9:30 AM on Saturday. 15
Medical Forms All Scouts and leaders attending camp must have completed a official BSA Medical form parts A & B. These forms are available on our website www.campdavycrockett.org Please use the most current version of the form. The medical forms will be kept on file for the duration of Winter Camp with the camp s Health Officer. They will be returned upon check-out. Dietary Concerns If you have a special dietary need, you should notify camp personnel in writing of the specific concerns or needs. CPAP Machines Electricity is not available in campsites. CPAP machines MUST be battery operated. Arrangement will be made for recharging. Health and Safety A health facility is located in camp and staffed by persons trained to handle minor emergencies and illnesses. Camp Davy Crockett has made arrangements with area hospitals to take care of any serious injuries or accidents. The Health Officer should be contacted for any illness or injuries before anyone is taken to an off-site health facility. Payment for services at any medical facility is the responsibility of the camper or his unit. If any treatment is required, the Scout s parents will be notified if at all possible by telephone to determine their wishes for emergency treatment. Emergency and Safety Procedures In case of an emergency at camp (i.e. fire, lost camper, lost swimmer, etc.), notify the Camp Director, Program Director, Camp Ranger and/or the Camp Medical Office immediately. The medical office is located behind the headquarters building. In case of high wind, heavy snow or any other weather emergency, the Camp Director will sound the alarm and everyone will report to the nearest shelter until it is safe to return to your campsite. STAY PUT until the all clear sounds, even if the alarm stops sounding. This is the camp s business phone and parents will not be able to talk to their children. The staff member will take a message and deliver it to the camper. Of course, emergency messages, will be delivered as soon as possible. Rules are made for the safety of campers, protection of equipment and to provide fairness to all. If rules are broken, it MAY be grounds for expulsion from camp and the troop will be responsible for securing transportation home. No alcoholic beverages, illegal drugs or drug paraphernalia. No smoking in the buildings or tents. Smoking will take place out of the presence of Scouts. The Boy Scouts of America prohibits the use of alcoholic beverages and controlled substances at encampments or activities on property owned and/or operated by the Boy Scouts of America, or at any activity involving participation of youth members. Shoes must be worn in camp at all times. No fireworks are permitted on camp property. Anyone leaving camp must sign out at Headquarters and sign back in upon return. If scouts will be leaving with anyone other than their parent or guardian, they will need to have a completed Permission to Leave Camp Form. A picture ID must be presented by person picking the scout up. Medication for Scouts should be maintained in the Health Lodge and administered by the health officer. All medications should be in the original bottle. No defacing property. No running on trails, hills or roads Camp Davy Crockett uses the Scout buddy system General Rules The following rules or policies were established to provide additional security for adults and youth in the Scouting program. Incidents of abuse or allegations of abuse should not occur with adherence to these procedures. NO ONE-ON-ONE CONTACT - One-on-one contact between adult leaders and Scouts is not permitted except between parent and scout. Personal conferences should be conducted in view of other Scouts and adults. RESPECT FOR PRIVACY - Adult leaders must respect the privacy of youth members in situations such as changing into swimming trunks or taking showers, and only intrude to the extent that health and safety dictates. Those 18 years of age and older are considered to be adults. SEPARATE ACCOMMODATIONS - When camping, no youth is permitted to sleep in the tent of an adult other than his parent or guardian. Separate shower facilities are available for males, females and youth. WILDLIFE - All wildlife should be left alone for scouts well-being as well as the wildlife. FUELS AND FLAMMABLES - MUST be handled according to Guide to Safe Scouting - Stored in a ventilated, locked box a safe distance (minimum 20 ft.) from buildings and tents 17
Winter Camp Checklist Each participant should bring their own gear. We cannot stress the importance of having the proper gear for winter camping. The key to cold weather camping is to stay warm and dry. Bring both lightweight and heavy weight clothing in order to layer if the weather is cold. For underwear and socks, bring at least one change per day.
