The Motability Scheme enables disabled people to use their government-funded mobility allowance to lease a new car, scooter or powered wheelchair. The Motability Scheme is overseen by Motability, a national charity (Registered Charity No 299745) that raises money for charitable grants to provide financial help to customers who cannot afford the vehicle or adaptations they need to drive or travel comfortably and safely. The Motability Scheme delivered its first vehicles to customers in July 1978 and since then over three and a half million cars, scooters and powered wheelchairs have been provided to help disabled people with their mobility needs. Having easy access to a safe, reliable and affordable vehicle gives disabled people the freedom to do many everyday things like going to work, school or college, attend medical appointments, go shopping.
