The museum is located in the Vendue House, a landmark building from the 19th century. The Vendue House use to be an auction venue where all types of products were sold, including slaves. The museum is named after a slave called "Pompey" who revolted against slavery. It is one of five libraries in Nassau. The building it is located in is an old colonial jail, dating back to the 1797, when it became the first building on Parliament Square, Nassau. It was converted into a library in 1873.
