Interlaken Welcome to Interlaken and enjoy some of the most beautiful Swiss sights! By the way, do you know what Interlaken means? Interlaken means between lakes and its name originates from a convent founded in the XII century, called Inter Lacus in Latin. Did you know that -Interlaken is the so-called gateway to the Jungfrau ; -Interlaken is the perfect place for those who love adventure sports, thus being the major centre for adventure sports in Switzerland; -One hundred years later, the Jungfrau Railway is still active after Adolf Gruyer Zeller sketched the idea on a page of his diary. How to go to Interlaken? Catch the train to Spiez which leaves hourly from Kandersteg train station and then catch the train to Interlaken Ost. Although Interlaken has two train stations (Interlaken West and Interlaken Ost), we suggest you to start from Interlaken Ost train station. Once you get off the train, at Interlaken Ost station, you begin your journey by walking towards the English Garden where you can find exotic trees and a monument in homage to Adolf Guyer Zeller. How to explore Interlaken? If you stay close to the river Aare s bank, you ll find a bridge that leads you to the aerial cable car which takes you on top of Interlaken s very own mountain, Harder Klum. The return trip costs 27 CHF but you are free to buy a one way only ticket if you feel you want to go up or down by walking. In case you are one of these adventurous people, you can also reach Harder Klum s top by hiking. For this, the Brúckwald-Promenaden is the perfect path as it is well signposted, with plenty of beautiful trees and other pretty plants.
Once you arrive at Harder Klum, enjoy the magnificent panorama! Are you able to figure out which lakes are the Brienzersee and the Thunersee? We bet you are... We re sure that the beauty of both lakes will make you feel you want to explore them more deeply. So don t hesitate to have a boat trip in one of the lakes at least. Very close to the Interlaken Ost train station, you can buy your ticket (48 CHF) for an almost 3 hour boat trip through the Brienzersee lake. As the boat makes several stops at the lake s surrounding areas, you can get off the boat as many times as you wish and catch the next boat (don t forget to check the boat timetables though). Are you adventurous? If it s adventure you are looking for, then you ll find it in Interlaken. As you might have noticed when you were at Harder Klum, paragliding is one of the most common adventure sports and probably the most delightful one, since it will enable you to enjoy Interlaken s panorama in a unique way. What a breath taking view of the Alpine mountains you ll have! You ll land in the paragliding landing park in the heart of Interlaken, surrounded by two beautiful churches, typical hotels and shops. Besides paragliding, you can also go skydiving, river rafting, and bungee jumping. Along the Interlaken streets, you ll find lots of little offices from several companies that offer these kinds of experiences. For a calm visit through Interlaken If you wish to do a relaxed less adventurer-like trip, Interlaken offers you a wide range of activities. Go for a bike ride by renting one in a Bike Rental Office or go on a horse drawn carriage ride. As Interlaken is a well known tourist centre, it also has a tourist train.
