LECCE The biggest city of Salento is Lecce. This is a city full of testimonials of Roman age, Medieval age and Renaissance, but above all, Lecce is a Baroque city. The interesting presence of a great number of monuments gives to this city a nickname: The Florence of the South. Here the baroque is expressed in an unique way. The Lecce s Baroque is characterized by the pietra leccese (Lecce s stone) a particular soft and compact calcareous stone, with a peculiar white/gold colour. Having a walk in the streets of the centre of this city you could admire beautiful examples of the manufacturing of this stone on the monumental churches, balconies and terraces. Duomo of Lecce Bauxite caves OTRANTO The city of Otranto is known and appreciated everywhere for its natural and artistic beauty and also for its cultural heritage that makes Otranto one of the most precious destinations of the Salento peninsula. Large beaches of golden sand, a historic center telling old stories, the warmth and authenticity of its inhabitants, the quaint charm of the Mediterranean, make this city one of the most beautiful and famous in Italy. The name of Otranto is probably best known abroad for The Castle of Otranto, Horace Walpole s pioneering Gothic novel. However, the creepy castle of Walpole s imagination bears little resemblance to the more recent stolid fortress in the real Otranto.
OSTUNI Ostuni is one of the most stunning cities in southern Italy famous for the dazzling effect of its whitewashed houses. It is a genuine and charming example of Mediterranean architecture.the city of Ostuni is a series of levels, staircases, small roads, alleys, arches. Hints of the Middle Ages are at hand in every corner, in every view to the sea, in the portal of a palace, in the walls of a convent or the front of a church. The sea around Ostuni is considered one of the most beautiful in Puglia due to its combination of beaches, crystal clear water and excellent level of accommodation offered. The 17 kilometres of coastline in Ostuni alternates between beaches with dunes covered in Mediterranean maquis, sandy bays and rocky coasts. View of Ostuni MOTTOLA Mottola is a small Apulian town in the province of Taranto, also known as the spy of the Ionian Sea, the name comes from its strategic geographical position, from which you can see the entire Gulf of Taranto.
