Following lunch at the celebrated Café Pushkin on Tverskaya Street, discover the newly restored Bolshoi Theatre during a backstage tour and meet with a dancer from the prestigious company. This evening return to the historic Bolshoi for a performance. Dinner is at leisure. After lunch continue to the New Tretyakov Picture Gallery, with works by artists including Malevich, Kandinsky, and Chagall. Then, visit the newly opened Garage Museum of Contemporary Art in Gorky Park, designed by Rem Koolhaas. Alternatively, travel to the East District of the capital to see Kuskovo, one of the first great summer country estates of the Russian nobility, or tour the beautiful stations of the Moscow Metro, The People s Palaces. After lunch at leisure, enjoy a walking tour of Red Square with its landmark St. Basil s Cathedral, Lenin s Tomb, and GUM department store facing the red brick towers and golden cupolas of the Kremlin. MOSCOW 1 VOLGA DREAM Sunday, June 19 Enter the Kremlin before public opening hours for a private visit to the Armory Museum, with its collection of tsarist thrones, ceremonial crowns, coaches, and gifts of state. Continue to the beautifully frescoed 15th-century Assumption and Annunciation Cathedrals. Lunch is at the colorful Artist Gallery, a restaurant in the Tsereteli Art Gallery. Travel north of the city to the river port and board the awaiting Volga Dream. Gather for the captain s welcome reception and dinner as we begin our cruise on this midsummer night. Fresco, Church of Elijah the Prophet, Yaroslavl GORITSY Wednesday, June 22 This morning arrive in the peaceful village of Goritsy to tour the Kirilov Belozersky Monastery, with its frescoed 13th-century Cathedral of the Assumption. Continue to the Ferapontov Monastery, a UNESCO World Heritage Site with magnificent frescoes by one of Russia s most renowned icon painters. Return to Volga Dream for lunch. In the afternoon the ship crosses Lake Beloye, or the White Lake, formerly known as the tsar s fishing grounds, and continues toward Lake Onega. M.S. Volga Dream UGLICH Monday, June 20 During a leisurely morning on board, attend a lecture and enjoy the amenities of our fine ship. We arrive this afternoon in Uglich, dating from the 10th century. A walking tour of this Golden Ring city includes the Chapel of Dimitry, a 17th-century architectural treasure built on the site where Ivan the Terrible s young son met his death. Visit the five-domed Church of the Transfiguration, noted for its beautiful iconostasis, and attend a concert of choral music. YAROSLAVL Tuesday, June 21 The oldest city on the Volga River, Yaroslavl was unharmed during World War II, and many religious buildings dating from the 13th to 17th centuries remain intact. In the Spassky Monastery, see the Transfiguration Cathedral, adorned with murals depicting St. John s apocalyptic visions, and then continue to the richly frescoed Church of Elijah the Prophet. There will be time to stroll the lively market before joining Volga Dream for lunch. As we cruise this afternoon, a Russian language class will be offered. KIZHY Thursday, June 23 This morning attend lectures and learn to prepare blinis and pelmenis during a Russian cooking class. In the afternoon explore the tiny, picturesque island of Kizhy, a UNESCO World Heritage Site on Lake Onega. The open-air Museum of Architecture includes the Church of the Transfiguration, an oniondomed masterpiece built without a single metal nail and resembling something out of a Russian fairytale. SVIR RIVER CRUISE Friday, June 24 Be on deck as we navigate the Svir River toward Lake Ladoga, Europe s largest freshwater lake, past a shoreline dotted with graceful willows, alder trees, and pines. Step ashore for a brief visit to the vacation village of Mandrogi and enjoy an informal talk by our lecturer. The captain hosts us for a caviar and blinis reception before dinner. ST. PAYMENT SCHEDULE $2,500 per person, payable to National Trust Tours, of which $350 is non-refundable for administrative fees, is required with the reservation application. CHANGES IN ITINERARY & COSTS The itinerary is subject to change at the discretion of the National Trust for Historic Preservation and AAA. CANCELLATIONS & REFUNDS All cancellations must be in writing and are subject to a $350 non-refundable processing fee. At the time AAA receives written notification of cancellation, the following cancellation charges will apply: cancellations received between 150 and 121 days prior to departure, 20 percent of the program cost per person; 120 and 90 days prior to departure, 50 percent of the program cost per person. No refunds will be given for cancellations received within 90 days of departure. No refunds are given for cancellation on day of departure or after, or for unused portions of tour. Trip cancellation insurance is strongly recommended. Air cancellation penalties will be assessed in accordance with airline regulations.
