WATERWAYS OF THE TSARS MOSCOW TO ST. PETERSBURG ABOARD VOLGA DREAM JUNE 15 TO 25, 2016

Dear National Trust Traveler: Join us for a midsummer voyage to discover the cultural treasures of Moscow and cruise the lakes and rivers of Russia to St. Petersburg. As we navigate the gentle waterways, the countryside will reveal peaceful villages and domed monasteries. Onboard lectures by Maryan Ainsworth, curator in the Department of European Paintings at The Metropolitan Museum of Art, and Russian cooking and language classes will add to the many pleasures of this trip. Spend three nights in Moscow to tour the Kremlin when it is closed to the public, go backstage at the legendary Bolshoi Theatre, and see the stellar collections of the Pushkin Museum and Tretyakov Galleries. Visit the newly opened Garage Museum of Contemporary Art; tour the stations of the Moscow Metro; or travel to the East District of the capital to see one of the first great estates of the Russian nobility. Admire the beautifully frescoed 15th-century Assumption and Annunciation Cathedrals, then board the elegant Volga Dream for a cruise of the Golden Ring cities. Call at Uglich, with its five-domed Church of the Transfiguration, and Yaroslavl, the oldest city on the Volga. Arrive in the village of Goritsy to view the magnificently frescoed monasteries before crossing Lake Beloye. Explore the picturesque island of Kizhy and cruise the Svir River toward Lake Ladoga to visit charming Mandrogi. Then, visit the newly opened Garage Museum of Contemporary Art in Gorky Park, designed by Rem Koolhaas. MOSCOW 1 VOLGA DREAM Sunday, June 19 Enter the Kremlin before public opening hours for a private visit to the Armory Museum, with its collection of tsarist thrones, ceremonial crowns, coaches, and gifts of state. Continue to the beautifully frescoed 15th-century Assumption and Annunciation Cathedrals. Lunch is at the colorful Artist Gallery, a restaurant in the Tsereteli Art Gallery. Travel north of the city to the river port and board the awaiting Volga Dream. Gather for the captain s welcome reception and dinner as we begin our cruise on this midsummer night. Fresco, Church of Elijah the Prophet, Yaroslavl GORITSY Wednesday, June 22 This morning arrive in the peaceful village of Goritsy to tour the Kirilov Belozersky Monastery, with its frescoed 13th-century Cathedral of the Assumption. Continue to the Ferapontov Monastery, a UNESCO World Heritage Site with magnificent frescoes by one of Russia s most renowned icon painters. Return to Volga Dream for lunch. In the afternoon the ship crosses Lake Beloye, or the White Lake, formerly known as the tsar s fishing grounds, and continues toward Lake Onega. M.S. Volga Dream UGLICH Monday, June 20 During a leisurely morning on board, attend a lecture and enjoy the amenities of our fine ship. We arrive this afternoon in Uglich, dating from the 10th century. A walking tour of this Golden Ring city includes the Chapel of Dimitry, a 17th-century architectural treasure built on the site where Ivan the Terrible s young son met his death. Visit the five-domed Church of the Transfiguration, noted for its beautiful iconostasis, and attend a concert of choral music. YAROSLAVL Tuesday, June 21 The oldest city on the Volga River, Yaroslavl was unharmed during World War II, and many religious buildings dating from the 13th to 17th centuries remain intact. In the Spassky Monastery, see the Transfiguration Cathedral, adorned with murals depicting St. John s apocalyptic visions, and then continue to the richly frescoed Church of Elijah the Prophet. There will be time to stroll the lively market before joining Volga Dream for lunch. As we cruise this afternoon, a Russian language class will be offered. KIZHY Thursday, June 23 This morning attend lectures and learn to prepare blinis and pelmenis during a Russian cooking class. In the afternoon explore the tiny, picturesque island of Kizhy, a UNESCO World Heritage Site on Lake Onega. The open-air Museum of Architecture includes the Church of the Transfiguration, an oniondomed masterpiece built without a single metal nail and resembling something out of a Russian fairytale. SVIR RIVER CRUISE Friday, June 24 Be on deck as we navigate the Svir River toward Lake Ladoga, Europe s largest freshwater lake, past a shoreline dotted with graceful willows, alder trees, and pines. Step ashore for a brief visit to the vacation village of Mandrogi and enjoy an informal talk by our lecturer. The captain hosts us for a caviar and blinis reception before dinner. ST. PETERSBURG 1 U.S.A. Saturday, June 25 Disembark this morning in St. Petersburg and transfer to the airport for the afternoon flights home.
