3 THINGS TO KNOW about Guimarães Guimarães is a city filled with creative energy, but also living historical archive. Guimarães is where Portugal was born as independent country in 1143. It was the first capital of the nation of Portugal. One of the best-preserved cities in Portugal, many of the 15th century buildings are still in use. The city has one of the youngest populations in Europe; half of its inhabitants are under age 30 years old. It is the birthplace of Afonso Henrigues, the first King of Portugal. Don't sing the praise of nearby Braga, or its football team, as rivalry between the two cities is fierce. On Friday and Saturday nights, the old town is filled with students partying until dawn. Starters are almost the same size as main courses: enormous. Almost all of the old town's public spaces have free Wi-Fi.
4 Guimarães Guimarães is in the district of Braga, just 55 kilometres from Porto. Guimarães is known as a birthplace of Portugal, since it was a birthplace of the first king of Portugal and was the first capital city of the country. It is one of the most historic cities in Portugal, due to the role it played in the foundation of nation. The city has a harmonious and wellpreserved historic centre which is the evident in the graceful iron verandas, granite balconies and porticos, mansions, arches, tower and cloisters. Guimarães has about 50.000 inhabitants.
5 Currency General Information Nowadays, currency of Portugal is Euro( ) just like other countries in Eurozone, which is very convenient for the European tourists to spend their money in Portugal. Portugal used Escudo as its national currency, before Euro was introduced to Portugal. There are many 24 hours ATM, which is called multibanco, around Portugal. The maximum daily withdrawal is 400 with the most being 200 at a time. The ATM machine s instruction is in Portuguese, but English and other languages are also available. Tourists from outside the Eurozone can exchange money at banks. The exchange fee is around 3 to 5 per transaction. Debit and credit cards, especially Visa and MasterCard are widely accepted. Travel Card If you plan to travel by public transportation, it is recommended to purchase a tourist travel card offering by CP services. This card allows you unlimited travel within your purchase route. There are 3 different routes including Lisbon urban trains, Oporto urban trains and Regional trains-algarve line, are available. For Oporto urban trains card, you can travel on the Aveiro, Braga, Guimarães and Marco lines. CP provides unlimited travel for 1 day or 3 days (24 or 72 hours in a row). The price is 7 a day or 15 for 3 days. The tickets are on sale from ticket offices and external partners, which are Side-Ride tours, Majestur-Viagens e Turismo, Theotherside andout (Oferta Universal de Turismo)
How to arrive to Guimarães from Oporto airport 6 Francisco Sa Carneiro airport or known as Oporto airport is the nearest airport to Guimarães. It is located in Porto, only 15 kilometres from Porto center. It is 45 kilometres away from Guimarães. You can reach Guimarães in several ways including bus, taxis and car rental. Shuttle GetBus You can take the GetBus from Porto airport to Guimarães. It takes only 50 minutes. You can buy a bus ticket at the airport or buy it online in advance. A single ticket is 8 a return ticket 14. From drop-off point GetBus, it's a 15 minutes walk to the conference venue. F0r more information please visit the website ( https://getbus.eu/en/). Taxis Taxis are the easiest and the most comfortable way for the tourists. However,it is also the most expensive way of traveling. There are plenty of taxis from different companies available at the airport. A taxi ride costs between 20 to 30 from the airport to Porto, between 60 to 90 for a ride to Guimarães. Moreover, you should expect the taxi fares to arise by 20% at evenings and during the weekends. From Porto airport, there is also Uber service available. Car rental Is easy, comfortable and worthwhile for traveling as a group. For anyone who would like to rent a car, there are plenty of cars offering from different companies including National, Hetz, Six rent a car, Eurocar, Avis and budget. They have desks for service you at the arrival terminal. We highly recommend you to read and understand the terms and conditions as there may be hidden charges.
7 Attractions and things to do Centro Cultural Vila Flor (Culture centre) Centro cultural Viva Flor was opened in 2005, and is now one of the most important sightseeing destinations in Guimarães. Originally,the Vila Flor Palace it was refurbished to be Centro cultural Viva Flor and hosts contemporary art exhibitions and presents a programmes covering dance, theatre and live music. Even though this cultural centre is large, the tickets are normally sold out at weekends. It is recommended to check and buy the ticket in advance. Moreover, Viva Flor is surrounded by the beautiful and well-decorated gardens with the view of Guimarães to help you chill and refresh. Dom Afonso Henriques 701, 4810-431 Guimarães, Portuga Igreja De Nossa Senhora da Oliveira The beautiful church founded by Countess Mumadona in 12th century, was rebuilt in 16th century. It is located in Largo da Oliveira, within the historic city center and has been classified as a national monument since 1910. The stone-brick façade and crenelated clock tower make Igreja de Nossa Senhora da Oliveira appears more like castle than a church. 8 Palace of the Dukes of Braganza The palace of the Dukes of Braganza is located in the center of Guimarães, and was built in the first quarter of 15th century by Afonso, Count of Barcelos. It fell into disrepair after 16th century and was classified as a national monument in 1910. It has now been restored towards its former glory. Hours : Everyday from 10AM to 6PM Address : R. Conde Dom Henrique 3, Guimarães, Portugal Sanctuary of Nossa Senhora de Penha It was built in 1946 in features a church, several shrines and a park with several natural caves that served as shelters in the past. It is a symbol of faith and beacon of Guimarães. It is a monument of singular beauty and worth architectural and religious. It is one of the most unique example of religious architecture of Marques de Silva. Address : Monte da Penha, 4800 Guimarães
9 Largo do Toural The architecture of Largo do Toural highlights the great concern of the town planners in the 18th century, the period of the Enlightenment with producing wide and spacious areas, revealing the different phases in the urban history of Guimarães that are still preserved today. Address : Largo do Toural 22, 4810-426 Guimarães, Portugal Citânia de Briteiros Citânia de Briteiros is about 24 hectares of dry stone walls that includes defensive walls, public meeting places, bathhouses and scores of homes. These were inhabited from the 9th century BC and some survived the Roman period and continued to be occupied until the middle ages. Citânia de Briteiros is only a few kilometres from Guimarães on São Romão hilltop. When you get there, you will be taken aback by the size of the settlement. The showpiece is the mysterious Pedra Formosa, a monolith with complicated Celtic carvings, that was once used for a burial chamber. 10 Largo da Oliveira The square in front of the Church of Nossa Senhora da Oliveira, allows you to enjoy the city and awe at its history and architecture. It is a great place to pull up a chair at a terrace bar and savour the scene with a cup of coffee or a cold drink. The square is named to venerate the ancient olive tree which is still growing there. Address : 9, Largo da Oliveira 8, 4810-431 Guimarães, Portugal Plataforma das Artes e da Criatividade Plataforma das Artes e da Criatividade is located next to Museu Arqueológico Martins Sarmento. It is an avant garde cultural centre, set where the city s market used to be. The building is half the attraction, especially at night when it s stark boxlike façade is illuminated. There is a permanent exhibition at the centre showcasing African, Pre- Colombian and Ancient Chinese art. These were donated by José de Guimarães, the prominent Portuguese artist. There is more space devoted to multi-disciplinary exhibitions for young contemporary artists as well as a bookshop, museum and studios. Address : Av. 11 Castelo de Guimarães (Castle of Guimarães) Castelo de Guimarães or Castle of Guimarães is located on the top of Mount Latito. Built in the second half of the 10th century, it is another popular tourist attraction and in 2007 was declared as one of the Seven Portuguese Wonders. The castle s presence evokes the exciting mixture of legend, poetry and heroism that surrounds the beginning of modern Portuguese history. The shape of the castle has not changed since the 14th century, when the castle was photographed for the first time. Hours : Monday to Sunday: 10AM 6PM Address : R. Conde Dom Henrique, Guimarães, Portugal Fares : Free entry Penha (Green Lung) If you are looking for some fresh air and a peaceful place to escape from a busy day, Penha is the recommended choice. A popular tourist spot, it is located 5 kilometres from downtown of Guimarães and is the highest point in the city. Penha impresses tourists with its natural beauty, abundance of water, the rocks and narrow paths ways between the rocks. Moreover, you get a great view of Guimarães. Penha contains around 60 hectares of protected green areas, caves, hermitages, viewing spots and a campsite. Address : Penha - Costa, 4810-038, Guimarães, Portugal
12 Manor of Sezim ( Casa Grande) Manor of Sezim is an 18th century crested-manor home in the civil parish of Nespereira, located in southwest of Guimarães. It is historically tide to the foundations of the Portuguese Kingdom, showing characteristics common to the 15th and later 18th century. This includes its complex wallpapers depicting imagery linked to the Portuguese Empire. Address : R. de Sezim, 4811-909, Guimarães, Portugal Igreja de São Miguel do Castelo The small church of S. Miguel do Castelo was built in the 13th century. It is located next to Castelo de Guimarães. However, according to tradition, this church would have been built in the 12th century by Count Dom Henrique (Henry of Burgundy), where he would have baptised his son, the 1st King of Portugal Dom Afonso Henriques. This church reveals great simplicity in terms of decoration. Inside, under the floor of this church lie buried the great warriors of the nation s founding period. The church became severely run-down during the early 19th century, but was later restored in 1874 and 1940. In 1910, it was classified as a National Monument. Restaurants / Cafés/ Bars 13 Cerverjaria Martins One of the oldest restaurants and snack bars of Guimarães, it has been around for more than 50 years and serves the best draft beer in town. Address : Largo do Toural 35, 4810-445 Guimarães, Portugal Cor de Tangerina If you are looking for healthy and organic dishes, Cor de Tangerina is your best bet. A vegetarian restaurant serving fresh organic foods such as grilled mushrooms, Greek salads and freshly squeezed juices it is set in a beautiful 19th century house. It is recommended to eat in the greenery garden. 14 Restaurant Florencio This is the best place for lovers of heavy meals. It is a comfortable restaurant and the Bucho Recheado comes highly recommended. Established in the the 1940s, it became a legendary meeting point for the people of Guimarães. Everything in the café is vintage, including the furniture. 15 Penha club One of the most iconic clubs around northern Portugal during the 1970s and 80s, Penha has recently come back to life. It hosts evenings of pop and electronic for a grown-up crowd.
