PENINSULA SWISS CLUB A social club for everyone with ties to Switzerland Newsletter No.5 October 2017 www.peninsulaswissclub.com President: Sandra Scanferla Eidam Vice President: Maja Schleicher-Joos Herbstfest & General Meeting Saturday, November 4, 2017 PRESIDENT S MESSAGE Dear Members and Friends of the Peninsula Swiss Club, We enjoyed a great summer filled with wonderful events. To begin with, the United Swiss Society Club hosted an amazing First of August celebration in Newark. Unfortunately, I couldn't join the fun, however, I was lucky to celebrate the Swiss National Day in Switzerland with family. A few weeks later we held the PSC First of August event in Los Altos. Please take a look at the wonderfully written essay about it and the beautiful pictures. We also had a fantastic time at the annual camping weekend in early September. Despite the record heat we had a lot of fun and enjoyed each other's company. Thanks to Monika Ryser for organizing it. The Herbstfest & General Meeting is our next event. As previously mentioned, we will serve a slightly different menu and will leave the name "Metzgete" behind us. As part of the General Meeting you will be able to vote for your Peninsula Swiss Club Committee for 2018. We will announce some changes to our committee, involving both new and existing members. I hope you will join us and cast your vote to show your support. First of August Celebration 2017 First of August was very special this year because so many Swiss Club members got to celebrate the holiday twice. My family and I were in St. Gallen on August 1, celebrating with our relatives. This has become a bit of a tradition every time we are in Switzerland. Thanks to the weather conditions, launching fireworks and playing with firecrackers is usually allowed. This is always something my brother and I look forward to. Like the many years before, we had a great time, even if most of Switzerland had scattered thunderstorms in the early evening. When we arrived back in the USA, I realized that there was another celebration of the Swiss National Day in just a few weeks. August 19 was a journey back to Switzerland and its diverse traditions right here in the Bay Area. Before any Swiss Club event, I am always excited for another great evening with authentic food, good friends, and fun Swiss customs. The car rides to the various locations are always packed with anticipation. This time, the journey was even more special because my family was responsible for picking up the Fleischkäse at Dittmer's prior to the event. So, while we drove with our precious cargo in the trunk, we already got to enjoy the wonderful smells. Three hours later, that Fleischkäse was baked, sliced, and being enjoyed by a room full of guests of all ages. In addition to the meat and salads, the event became even more Swiss with the rare appearance of Rivella. This popular drink is not sold in the US, making it a wonderful and rare treat for all of us. Discussions varied from table to table, but stories of recent visits to Switzerland as well as plans for the upcoming Solar Eclipse seemed to be most popular. Thanks to everyone who attended and helped make this year s First of August celebration lively and special. I am looking forward to next year! Fabrice Kurmann
Art and Culture Swiss art Space THE DIVINE ORDER (DIE GÖTTLICHE ORDNUNG) Sat. Nov. 11, 2017 7:30 PM Goethe-Institut, San Francisco San Francisco Premiere 96 mins. Switzerland (2017). Digital Projection. Swiss German with English subtitles. Director: Petra Volpe U.S. Distributor: Zeitgeist Films, New York City The Swiss Cultural Committee will give away some free tickets, please check their Facebook page or email Anna Ralston at annaralston@att.net. Switzerland's Official Entry to the 2018 Academy Awards for Best Foreign Language Film consideration. Political and religious leaders in Switzerland cited the Divine Order as the reason why women still did not have the right to vote as late as 1970. Director Petra Volpe explores this surprising history through the story of Nora (Marie Leuenberger), a seemingly unremarkable housewife from a quaint village who must learn to become an unflinching suffragette leader. After organizing the villages first meeting to support women getting the right to vote, her family is mocked, bullied, and shunned. Despite the obstacles and backlash, Nora perseveres and convinces the village women to go on strike, abandoning their homes and families. A strong ensemble cast brings the story to its inspirational conclusion when Swiss women finally secure the right to vote in 1971. The Divine Order is a heartfelt and captivating film about regular people demanding their right to an equal voice. Dan Hunt, Tribeca Film FestivalThe Divine Order won three awards following its International Premiere at the 2017 Tribeca Film Festival, including the Audience Award and the Jury Award for Best Actress in an International Narrative Feature for Marie Leuenberger. With seven nominations, the film won three awards at the 2017 Swiss Film Prize: Best Actress for Marie Leuenberger, Best Performance in a Supporting Role for Rachel Braunschweig, and Best Screenplay by Petra Volpe.
