Outdoor property Access Statement Box Hill, Surrey Box Hill Tadworth, Surrey. KT20 7LB T: 01306 888793 T: Rangers 07770 887673 or 07770 887674 E: boxhill@nationaltrust.org.uk Introduction This property is set over 490.ha and includes scenic viewpoints, an indoor café/shop, outdoor servery and seating and a variety of waymarked trails from easy to challenging routes. There are numerous paths across the site taking you from the steep slopes down to the tranquil River Mole and the Stepping Stones (275 steps from the viewpoint) or across towards Headley and beyond. There are 7 way-marked trails, ranging from a half hour stroll through to the demanding 8 mile hike several of the routes are steep and include numerous steps so suitable clothing and footwear is essential. The 2 mile level waymarked play trail includes a variety of equipment made from natural products. All routes may be muddy during wet weather and after heavy rain the stepping stones may become impassable. Dogs are welcome however as livestock graze in some areas please be alert and keep dogs under control around livestock and other visitors. Dogs, except assistance dogs, are not allowed in the shop or café. Dog bins are located at: the main car park and east car park. Please ensure that you clean up after your dog. Stepping Stones across River Mole NB - Mobile phone reception varies across the site. In an emergency, please make contact on the phone number above as soon as you are able. Page 1 of 5

Arrival & Parking Facilities The entrance to the main car park is 200 yards past the National Trust café when arriving from the Zig Zag Road direction on Box Hill. The Zig Zag road is approached from the A24 between Dorking and Leatherhead and can be accessed from the B2209 just past Rykas café. There are signs from the A24 junction and the main car park is approximately 2 miles from the B2209 junction the tarmac Zig Zag Road is steep, narrow in places and has several tight turns. There are also a number of small speed humps to control the traffic speed. Zig Zag Road is not suitable for large vehicles and coaches and these vehicles must approach Box Hill from the Headley direction (B2032/B2033), parking at the East car park, where you ll find 40 spaces. The surface of the East car park is gravel and loose stones. The main car park has 230 spaces and the surface is loose stone/gravel with wooden half poles to delineate spaces there are no specific disabled bays in the main car park. There is another smaller visitor car park just before the café with approx. 25 unmarked spaces - the surface of this car park is loose gravel. There are 3 marked disabled bays which are on tarmac initial access to these bays is across the gravel car park. The East car park is approximately ½ mile from the café and toilets and access is either across the Donkey Green a grassed area, or by following a gravel footpath which runs alongside the main road. The smaller car park next to the café is approx. 50 yards from the café and toilets and access to these is on smooth tarmac paths. All car parks are pay and display with free parking for National Trust members during daylight hours. There are payment machines at each car park - the cost to park is 1.50 per hour for the first 2 hours, 4 for up-to 4 hours and 6 for 5 hours and above, or free for National Trust members. An additional car park is also available at the Stepping Stones, this is found close to the bottom of Box Hill and is accessed directly from the A24 southerly direction only. This car park has a gravel surface and space for approx.25 cars. This car park is pay and display, with one machine and the same prices as detailed above. There are no facilities at this car park and the café/main car park are across the stepping stones in the river (may be impassable after heavy rain), up a steep slope and 275 steps. This path can become slippery and muddy during wet weather. Café/shop/servery & welcome area The viewpoint, several walks, the café, servery and toilets all require you to cross the main entrance road so care should be taken as this road is used by a large number of vehicles and pedal cycles. A shepherd s hut is based to the edge of the main car park, close to the pay and display machines, and here you will find staff/volunteers on most days to provide information and the opportunity to join the National Trust. The hut is accessed via 3 steps, however Page 2 of 5

staff/volunteers will come to greet visitors outside and they have access to table and chairs should they be required. Surfaces and paths around the café, servery and toilets are mainly of bonded gravel and tarmac there is a slight slope leading down from the road to the buildings and this may be slippery when wet. There is also a grassed area and a large number of outdoor benches and picnic tables are spread across both the grass and gravel areas. The café has 3 picnic tables which are under an awning to the front and 24 indoor covers. There is a hearing induction loop at the café and all food/drink options are on black boards with white writing. Staff are on hand to provide assistance and advice on food/drink available. Large handled cutlery/cups etc. are not available. The lighting in the café is bright and airy. There is also an outside servery providing drinks and snacks the service for this is via a window at 100cm height. There is an awning for a cover as you queue at the servery and there is a hearing loop at this point. Menus are provided on boards on the rear wall of the servery and to the side before you order on the wall and staff are on hand to advise of the menu if necessary. We do not supply large handled cutlery/cups. Facilities Toilets are available between the servery and café and are accessed through a gateway on a bonded gravel path measuring 1.5m wide and 2.25 high approx. There is a very shallow slope down towards the toilet entrance. There are 4 ladies cubicles, 3 men s urinals and 1 men s cubicles. Baby changing and disabled toilets are also available. The lighting in the toilets is strip fluorescent and electric hand dryers are also in place. Wooden steps are available in the toilet blocks to be used if necessary children should be supervised at all times whilst using these. The flooring of the toilet block is tiled. Trails Access from the main car park to the start of the walks and the play trail is across gravel and grass which may be slippery when wet. There are seven way marked walks ranging from less than a mile to 8 miles in length. There is a map available to show these routes on the noticeboard at the shepherd s hut which is located next to the main car park and also on the pentagon board which is located next to the café. The walks are also detailed on the Box Hill website and available in leaflet form from the shepherd s hut and pentagon. Way marker posts around the car park indicate the direction of the routes. The easiest route to access for wheelchair users, avoiding steep slopes, is the Natural Play trail, although this can become very muddy during wet weather. Several of the trails involve steps and steep slopes and suitable clothing and footwear should be worn. Page 3 of 5

Natural Play trail Education/Classroom A classroom is also available for hire at Box Hill. This room will accommodate up-to 30 people seated or 60 standing for an event and chairs/tables and a projector are also available for hire with this room. There are no toilet facilities attached to this room (use of the visitor toilets outside the café are the nearest approx. 50 yards across a bonded gravel surface) and access to the classroom is via a small entrance area with a fairly tight right turn into the room through a standard door. There is a fire exit up 4 shallow steps with a turn at the top. The lighting in the room is from halogen bulbs. There isn t a hearing loop.
