Perfect weather for sailing It is hard to imagine a more perfect sailing and cruising area. In the summer the wind picks up at midday, blows through the afternoon and disappears at sunset. This enables travellers to enjoy a good night s sleep without worrying about the anchor holding. The perfect morning calm lets sailboats motor northwards against the prevailing wind direction and gives the opportunity for yachts and speed boats to cruise with safety.
In the 20 years that I have been involved in the yachting industry, I have had the opportunity to sail in many exotic locations from the Caribbean to Asia. I still believe that the Ionian Islands are one of the most attractive cruising areas of the world with their many protected anchorages, great hospitality and a fascinating wealth of history and culture. Currently the travel time from Athens to Paleros is 3.5 hours and the route crosses the spectacular Rio-Antirio bridge shown above. The forthcoming Patras-Korinthos highway will reduce the journey by one hour. You can reach Paleros by seaplane which lands at the adjacent port of Lefkada. Services in the area MEDICAL In Paleros you can find pharmacies and local doctors. It is less than a 15 minute drive to the Health Center of Vonitsa and less than a 30 minute drive to the General Hospitals of Lefkada or Preveza which offer a wide range of medical care. The University Hospital of Ioannina (www.uhi.gr) provides a high standard of care with the latest medical and technological equipment and highly qualified medical staff. You can reach Ioanina within 1.5 hours drive, or by seaplane and by helicopter in an emergency. BANKING FACILITIES There are ATM cash machines in Paleros.
