Madrid is characterised by its intense cultural and artistic activity, a very lively nightlife as well as being home to the Spanish Royal Family. Madrid is the third largest city in the European Union, after London and Berlin, and is considered the major financial centre of Southern Europe and the Iberian Peninsula due to its economic output, high standard of living, and market size. While Madrid possesses a modern infrastructure, it has preserved the look and feel of many of its historic neighbourhoods and streets. Its landmarks include the Royal Palace of Madrid; the Teatro Real (Royal theatre) with its restored 1850 Opera House; the Buen Retiro park, founded in 1631; the 19th century National Library building (founded in 1712) containing some of Spain s historical archives; an archaeological museum; and the Golden Triangle of Art, located along the Paseo del Prado. The city offers a great selection of cultural, leisure and gastronomical experiences which can be enjoyed surrounded by a population that has mastered the art of living the good life! Accommodation - The Westin Palace Hotel Commissioned by King Alfonso XIII in 1912, the newly restored Westin Palace Madrid is ranked as one of the world s best hotels in a recent travel survey. Located in Madrid s centre, it is known for its spectacular stained glass dome and its close proximity to many of Madrid s famous sites and best tapas restaurants. At the centre of the Art Triangle, you will discover within a short distance the cultural marvels in the Prado, Thyssen and Reina Sofia museums. The short walk to the Royal Palace and the Opera House sets the hotel as a unique and privileged location.

Wednesday 26 September 2012 Buffet breakfast is available at the hotel before our day excursion to Toledo. 8am 5pm: TOLEDO DAY TOUR The origins of the city of Toledo are lost in the mists of legend, the first written testimony being that of the historian Tito Livio, who describes Toletum as a small fortified town. Given the strategic importance of its location, on the crossroads of the most important routes of the Spanish peninsula, Toledo has always been highly sought-after as a prize by the different civilizations that have occupied Spain through history. During the Roman conquest, Toledo was a centre of great strategic value; it minted its own money and had an important circus and an aqueduct. Numerous Roman remains bear testimony of the importance of the city at that time. During the middle of the 6 th century the Visigoth kings installed their court in Toledo, the city thus becoming the political and religious capital of Spain under the title of The Royal City. King Alfonso VI of Castile reconquered the city in 1085, converting it into the capital of his kingdom and initiating a new stage of enrichment which was to flourish over the following centuries and reach its most glorious moment of plenitude during the last quarter of the 15 th century and the first half of the 16 th. As early as the 13 th century, the School of Translators of Toledo had brought classical and Arabic culture to the western world; and Toledo was the capital offering the most favourable convivial atmosphere for the blending of the Arabic, Jewish and Christian cultures. During the 15 th century, the Catholic Kings showed their predilection for the city by building the temple of San Juan de Los Reyes, with the idea of being buried there, and it was in the Cathedral of Toledo that Juana la Loca and Felipe el Hermoso were proclaimed successors to the Spanish throne. No other city possesses a series of architectural monuments as splendid as those found in Toledo, or covering such a wide span of history. This richness makes the whole city a marvellous museum, which has been declared in its entirety a part of Heritage of Humanity. Thursday 27 September 2012 Buffet Breakfast is available at the hotel. Lunch, afternoon and evening at leisure. Optional tours are on offer and can be booked at the hospitality desk located outside the conference room.
