MATUSADONA NATIONAL PARK / KARIBA Zimbabwe 20

MATUSADONA NATIONAL PARK / KARIBA Zimbabwe Along the southern shores of Lake Kariba lies Matusadona National Park. Named by the locals after the Matuzviadonha Hills - rugged mountains protecting the diverse flora and fauna, Matusadona National Park covers 1,400 km2 and its area encompasses a combination of pristine and rugged wilderness. The park is world famous for offering visitors an incredible wildlife and safari experience incorporating the famous Lake Kariba. In the late 1950 s, the Zambezi Valley was flooded to create Lake Kariba- the world s biggest man-made lake. Lake Kariba is over 290km long and 30km wide at its widest and has been described in the past as an inland sea. The creation of the lake caused profound ecological changes. In particular, the availability of grazing on the lakeshore has contributed to an increase in the populations of large mammals in the park, especially those of African elephant and Cape buffalo. This park is home to Zimbabwe s largest population of lions- said to have a density second only to that of Tanzania s Ngorongoro Crater- and it is one of the best places to view the endangered black rhino. www.africanbushcamps.com 21

AFRICAN BUSH CAMPS FOUNDATION Community Development Through Responsible Tourism The African Bush Camps Foundation began operating in 2006 with the vision of creating opportunities that empower rural communities located in vulnerable wildlife areas. The African Bush Camps Foundation is a registered not-for-profit organization that is committed to empowering rural communities. The African Bush Camps Foundation s mission is to partner with these communities to improve their quality of life and achieve long-term conservation through programs focusing on education, conservation, community infrastructure, and community empowerment. By directly linking these benefits to tourism, these communities learn to positively value wildlife and nature as resources. Our programs are designed to reduce human impact on the environment; teach communities how to conserve the land while implementing sustainable practices and to assist community members to develop skills to run relevant, viable, and environmentally sustainable trade projects. We believe that by partnering with these communities in establishing sustainable programmes of education, income generation, conservation awareness and holding community events, we can together improve the communal quality of life and achieve long term conservation through responsible tourism. The Foundations work is spread through Dete in Hwange, Hurungwe in Mana Pools and Chobe and Khwai areas in Botswana. www.africanbushcamps.com 46

Education - Our programs support education and skill set development with a particular emphasis on orphans and vulnerable children. Through our efforts, which include student scholarships, teacher sponsorships, life skills and leadership training camps and infrastructure improvements, we are increasing access to quality education for over one thousand children in the communities surrounding Hwange National Park and in the Chobe and Khwai regions in Botswana. THE THANDANANI SEWING PROJECT - The Thandanani Sewing Project is a group of five women, aged 22-61, that came together in Dete in 2009. They owned three sewing machines between them, but they had no funds to buy material to get started. They received funds in August 2012 through the Foundation, and in September 2012 they made their first sales. Like all of the Foundation s Income-Generation Projects, the Thandanani Sewing Project is based on a micro-finance model, where the initial investment is paid back as part of the business plan and then used to either expand the current project or alternatively pass the capital onto another group or community to start a new project, on a revolving funding basis. LION GUARDIANS AND THE MOBILE CATTLE BOMA INITIATIVE - The African Bush Camps Foundation supported the training and equipping of a Lion Guardian for Mambanje community. The Lion Guardian is responsible for monitoring lion movements and providing early warning systems to the community if there is a lion in the area. In addition to this, the ABCF also started The Mobile Cattle Boma Initiative, which houses livestock in bomas overnight to reduce lion predation. The traditional cattle boma, made of indigenous timber, has been replaced by boma walls made from opaque white plastic sheeting (PVC) which is supported by poles and strung on ropes or cables like a curtain and is easily movable. There have been no livestock killings in the Mambanje Area since its inception of the bomas. THE VUKANI BEAD MAKING GROUP IN DETE - The Vukani Group is a group of 10 people who started an Income-Generation Project in 2010, including an organic vegetable garden as well as a beading and jewellery-making project. The jewellery-making project was started in August 2011, and pieces are hand-crafted using recycled materials like magazines which are rolled into beads and then used to create unique earrings, necklaces and bracelets. The project has had great success with many sales, including sales from the guests shopping for souvenirs at African Bush Camps. www.africanbushcampsfoundation.org info@africanbushcampsfoundation.org 47

H 2 O HWANGE CAMPAIGN Hwange National Park, Zimbabwe The 14700 sq\km (1.4 million hectares) Hwange National park is situated in the notoriously arid Western region of Zimbabwe. The park is covered by a blanket of Kalahari sand which was blown in from Botswana many millions of years ago. This deep Kalahari sand has no natural rivers, springs or permanent water so it is imperative to provide water for the prolific wildlife which is found in this area. In 2012 African Bush Camps in partnership with the African Bush Camps Foundation initiated a campaign called H20 Hwange, a pledge to support National Park and various other organisations in their endeavours to supply water to areas of the Hwange National Park where the natural pans and waterholes have dried up. Following a very poor rainy season Zimbabwe s Hwange National Park faces a critical and potentially devastating dry season as the country experiences a national drought. Many of the natural waterholes around the park are already dry and wildlife continue to congregate in their masses around areas and pans which have limited sources of water remaining. www.africanbushcamps.com 48

Having already invested in establishing three solar boreholes on Somalisa Concession, African Bush Camps is now embarking on including automated change over switches to an inverter for each of these solar units in order to have 24-hour water being pumped. With other key sites identified the H20 Hwange campaign will be looking at areas outside of our concession to ensure water is distributed evenly so that ecologies in one area are not affected with over concentration of species. We are therefore appealing to all of our friends and supporters to assist in the fundraising efforts to supply water to the animals in the areas on and surrounding our concession, where Somalisa Camp and Somalisa Acacia are based. African Bush Camps currently spend on average USD20,000 annually to pump 3 pans within the concession, and the objective is to provide additional water sources in the surrounding area to avoid overpopulation of species and ensure enough water is available for the animals. www.africanbushcamps.com/h2o-hwange sophia@africanbushcamps.com 49

CONSERVATION AND WILDLIFE FUND Hwange National Park, Zimbabwe In today s world where biodiversity is threatened by shrinking habitats, one of the best things we can do for conservation is turn what is perceived as marginal areas into prime wildlife conservancies through intensifying their protection and building up the wildlife pool. The Conservation and Wildlife Fund is a collaborative initiative set up to work together with stakeholders including other environmentalist and conservation groups, National Parks and local communities, in order to raise awareness, and provide adequate tools for the management of Zimbabwe s precious wildlife resources. The Trust is a duly registered not-for-profit legal entity in Zimbabwe and shall be governed by a Board of Trustees. The fund is overseen by a collaboration of stakeholders, to find long-term and sustainable methods to protect Zimbabwe s key wildlife species, their habitats and the communities surrounding these habitats within Zimbabwe. With a particular starting focus on Hwange National Park, the Conservation Wildlife Fund has objectives to increase their scope to cover the entire country and its protected wildlife areas. www.africanbushcamps.com 50

The core focus of the Conservation & Wildlife Fund will be: 1. Assisting and supporting anti-poaching methods 2. Raising funding for specific research for key wildlife species or projects, which are considered a priority to wildlife ecosystems. This includes supporting existing research initiatives 3. Supporting community education programs in conjunction with existing projects. Assessing new initiatives that will promote the education and awareness for the need to protect wildlife and accept tourism as a conservation and empowering tool for local communities 4. Supporting local and community enterprises in tourism development and provision of products to the tourism industry Africa and its wildlife are under serious threat, more so today than ever before. We are at a crucial time where statistics show that in the last three years over 100,000 elephants have been killed (Stop Ivory, 2015), there are as few as 12,000 lions left in Southern Africa (ICUN et al., 2015) and our Rhino population is almost extinct (Save the Rhino.org, 2016). The fight and the victory for the success of our wildlife and its future is one that cannot be fought alone. Wildlife in Africa is not just for the people of Africa but should be seen as a Global Asset. The Conservation and Wildlife Fund is committed to working towards the long term and sustainable conservation of Africa s wildlife, culture and habitats.
