Iris Information Event 10-11 October 2011 Overview of SESAR P. Tavernise
WHY SESAR?
EUROPEAN CHALLENGES: Capacity: Air Traffic to double by 2030 Safety: Improvements linked to growth Environment: Growth must be green Economics: Liberalisation Operations: Eliminate fragmentation Technology: All above & interoperability
EUROPEAN CHALLENGES: A new Air Traffic Management System is required: For the benefit of all airspace users: airlines, business & general aviation, airports, air navigation service providers, military, passengers & citizens
CHANGE IS IN THE AIR: A PARADIGM SHIFT
4D TRAJECTORY MANAGEMENT Moving from trajectory imposed by ATC..to 4-D trajectories with services and airspace facilitated to user needs
Provide the appropriate Decision Maker with the relevant and up-to-date information
Increasing needs in information exchanges! Entire trajectory Weather information Elements for aircraft-to-aircraft based separation An Intranet for Air Traffic Management is a requirement
V0.2 FCI and P15.2.4 project Iris Information Event 10 th October, 2011 Nikos Fistas (SWP15.2) and Philippe Sacre (P15.2.4 PM) The European Organisation for the Safety of Air Navigation
Basic Assumptions Future ATM concept introduces new (demanding in data exchanges) ATM services Data will be the primary mode of future operations (voice only for emergency) Previous analyses demonstrated that no single technology meets all requirements across all operational flight domains FCI will be a system of systems integrating existing sub networks (VDL) as well as new sub networks 10

Project 15.2.6: Main objective SESAR P15.2.6 is the project interfacing SESAR and ESA Iris Programme for all the SATCOM matters Project 15.2.6 Main objective: Develop the requirements for the future Satellite Communication system (inputs for the ESA Iris Programme) and perform complementary activities of validation and support to the standardization Corporate Communications All rights reserved 2007, Thales Alenia Space
Project 15.2.6: Project in brief Partners: THALES (TAS-I Leader), INDRA, FREQUENTIS, ALENIA, AIRBUS AENA, NORACON EUROCONTROL Observers: ESA Duration: April 2010 to End 2016 Corporate Communications All rights reserved 2007, Thales Alenia Space
Project 15.2.6: Specific objectives 1. Define the Iris mission requirements identifying the satellite link operational concepts 2. Define the SATCOM system interfaces with the overall SESAR infrastructure 3. Support the technical validation of the ESA Iris development from an end-to-end point of view in collaboration with P15.2.4 for the FCI Operational Concept 4. Support the standardization processes related to the satellite communication system and promoting this aviation technical standard to regional and international standardizations bodies (ICAO, EUROCAE, etc.) Corporate Communications All rights reserved 2007, Thales Alenia Space
