Trojan War Actors at their best (I can look at an event from different perspectives and act out what can happen when two different civilizations want the same thing.)

The Mycenaeans

Hello Mycenaeans! Originally from Central Asia (Russia). Invade Greek mainland around 2000 B.C.E. First Greek Kings Conquer the majority of the Peloponnesian Peninsula with lots of grasslands.

Can you find Mycenae? In the Grasslands

How do we know about the Mycenaeans? Dear Heinrich Schliemann, Thank you for discovering the walled palace of Mycenae and for your lovely Mycenaean artifacts. Sincerely, Mrs. Stryjak

Enrichment???? Why were they considered the first kings and not the Minoans?

Kingdoms Palaces built on a hilltops and surrounded by a huge walls to protect them They gained land through the favor of the king (having the king like them)

This is where the palace of Mycenae once stood. City-State =Polis

Kingdoms The Megaron = a huge room used for entertainment & council meetings In times of danger all citizens of Mycenae lived within the city walls

Archaeological remains of Mycenae.

Enrichment???? Draw a picture of some activities that may have went on in the megaron!

Learning the Ropes By 1800 B.C.E. Mycenaeans begin to trade with Minoans when the Minoans began to visit from Crete. Copied Minoan design for ships, swords, shields, and culture (example Mother Earth)! Learn to navigate using the sun and stars.

Learning the Ropes After being taught by the Minoans the Mycenaeans conquered Crete and nearby islands, destroying the Minoans.

Enrichment???? Was it right for the Mycenaeans to destroy the civilization that made them powerful and taught them much of what they learned?

Trade By 1400 B.C.E. control the Mediterranean Sea! Trade with Egypt & Parts of Southern Italy. Why? Overthrow the Minoans

Enrichment???? Tell me about/draw the ships they would have used to trade so far away.

Warfare & Their Collapse Best known battle they won: The Trojan War Middle 1200 s B.C.E.

What did you know about the Trojan War?

The Trojan War Troy A trade center in Turkey that is located on the Dardanelles Strait connecting Asia and Europe

The Trojan War And the golden globe goes to. Acting out the Trojan War and finding out what may have happened. What should we do 1. First summarize your section in no more than three sentences 2. Figure out who is acting out what part and who is narrating (everyone must participate) 3. Come up with a short 2-3 minute skit.

Part 1 A gift was presented to three goddesses. It said it was for the most beautiful. The three goddesses fought over it. They picked a human named Paris to vote who was the prettiest and bribed him. He picked Aphrodite because she offered him the most beautiful woman in the world.

Part 2 Paris goes to Sparta to take Helen (the most beautiful woman in the world) home with him. They run away together even though she is married. Her husband chases them.

Part 3 After 10 years of war the Trojans and the Greeks are tied. The hero of the Greeks, Achilles, has his lady taken from him. He is upset and refuses to fight. His cousin fights and pretends to be him. The cousin is killed. Achilles gets upset and starts to fight again killing the Trojan hero, Hector.

Part 4 The war is still not won. The Greeks come up with a plan to trick the Trojans. They make a huge wooden horse and hide soldiers in it and then pretend to sail away. The Trojans take the horse into their city and that night the Greek soldiers leave the horse and let the other Greeks in the city to destroy Troy and win the war!

Warfare & Their Collapse Trojan war = victory??? Cost of War: $$$$$$$$$ Soldiers away at war are not available to protect at home Civil Wars break out at home, while military is in Troy.

Warfare & Their Collapse The Mycenaeans collapsed because: Civil Wars break out at home, while military is in Troy. Civil War wars between opposing citizens in one civilization. Earthquakes By 1100 B.C.E. Mycenaean civilization collapsed.
