The Cavo Ventus experience THE WINDMILL Cavo Ventus is built around a 200 years old stone windmill, which operated until the 1956 earthquake. In the old days, there were over 70 windmills in Santorini, that were used in order to produce flour by exploiting wind power. Due to the strong winds blowing in the area, some of them were built in Akrotiri. The presence of the vault, which was the characteristic element of the island s buildings, also influenced the construction of the windmills, creating a type of interior arrangement which is not encountered elsewhere in Greece. Another original feature was the combination of mills and ovens (bakeries), which constituted a single business, forming a whole building complex with the house for the miller and his family and various other buildings. The location: Akrotiri Santorini experience Download the fully interactive ipad application The Santorini Experience HD, from the App Store, including amazing photos, videos and texts about Santorini.

The location Akrotiri Akrotiri is a truly privileged location offering stunning views to the caldera of Santorini and the volcano. Nearby you will find the famous archaeological site of the prehistoric settlement, the castle, the village and the lighthouse of Akrotiri. In the area you may also visit the famous White and Red beaches, the Emporeio castle and Goulas (tower), Perivolos and Perissa beaches and Theros Wave Bar in Vlychada beach, featuring the impressive volcanic rocks.

The location Akrotiri The most prominent archaeological site in Santorini is the prehistoric settlement of Akrotiri (meaning promontory). First signs of habitation in Akrotiri date back to the Late Neolithic Period (at least from the 4th millennium BC). By the Early Bronze Age (3rd millennium BC), there was a settlement in Akrotiri that was expanded in the Middle and Late Bronze Age (20th-17th centuries BC) becoming one of the main urban centres of the Aegean. Covering about 50 acres, the settlement had a very wellplaned infrastructure. Imported products found inside the buildings prove that Akrotiri was well developed, held strong ties with Minoan Crete and conducted business with the Greek mainland, the Dodecanese, Cyprus, Syria, and Egypt. The growth of the town ended abruptly at the end of the 17th century BC, when its inhabitants left due to powerful seismic foreshocks. Then, the volcano erupted, and volcanic material covered the town and the rest of the island, preserving the buildings and their contents to this day. Professor Spyros Marinatos began systematic excavations in Akrotiri, in 1967. After Marinatos died, in 1974, excavations continued under the direction of professor Christos Doumas. The archaeological site is truly impressive and it is all covered with a new bioclimatic roof. Walk around and feel like an ancient habitant of Thira! Visiting hours 10.00-17.00. For information please contact: +30 22860 81939 and the Museum of Prehistoric Thera: +30 22860 23217

The Castle of Akrotiri

The Castle of Akrotiri The Akrotiri fortress seems to have been built during the first Venetian century. It belongs to the same type of fortified settlements as Pyrgos and Emporio. The Akrotiri fortress was named La Ponta and was built around a pre-existing Goulas (tower). It is first mentioned in written sources in 1336, when the Sanudo family incorporated the island to the Duchy of the Aegean, temporarily pushing aside the Barozzis. La Ponta fortress became administratively independent, as it was handed over by Niccolo Sanudo to the Gozzadinis, and remained under their rule even after the Turkish occupation. The kasteli had a Goulas (tower) at its centre, which had existed in good condition until the earthquake of 1956. The construction of the Goulades was directly related to the social organization on the island. Powerful masters with imposing towers, like the Goulades, were distinguished from the rest of the local aristocracy which lived in Kastelia. In the village of Akrotiri you should visit the remains of the Medieval castle, surrounded by some of the old traditional houses. The buildings inside the castle (as in other Kastelia on the island) were given to private individuals during the exchanges of land. The owner of the Goulas has restored the impressive building and since the spring of 2012 it hosts an exchibition and workshop about the hand made Greek bagpipe (www.laponta.gr). In Akrotiri you will also see the churches of Aghia Triada, Ypapanti and Aghia Theodosia, protector of the castles.

Nearby beaches Theros Wave Bar, in Vlychada Situated among the impressive volcanic rocks, Theros is one of the most exotic and impressive beach bars in the Aegean. Enjoy the beach service in the organized beach with the comfortable sun beds, and enjoy a therapeutic massage in the private terraces facing the sea. www.theroswavebar.gr

Nearby beaches Red Beach The view of the red, almost vertical, volcanic rocks and the small, reddish pebbles will take your breath away. This volcanic scenery is dotted with umbrellas and the figures of visitors with colorful clothes and accessories, coming here to marvel at the wild landscape and take a swim.

Nearby beaches White beach Huge white rocks, pumice stone, black sand and white pebbles, crystalline waters: this small beach makes a sharp contrast to the nearby beach of Kokkini (Red) beach. There are a few umbrellas and sun beds, along with a canteen. You can get there by boat from Akrotiri beach and Kokkini (Red) beach.

The Santorini Experience Seductive, romantic, cosmopolitan, wild, impressive: No matter how you characterize it, the beauty of Santorini is unique and it engages with the emotions generated by your visit to one of the most famous and romantic destinations on the planet. Info Download the Experience Santorini smartphone apps from the App Store and the Android Market. Use the Augmented Reality function to track down all the attractions near you. The imposing landscape of the steep volcanic cliffs of the Caldera, the spectacular sunsets, the volcanoes and the myth of the lost Atlantis, the prehistoric settlement of Akrotiri, the traditional undercut cave houses, the volcanic beaches and the all-white chapels inspired famous painters and poets, who lauded through their works the seductive island of the Aegean. The trip to Santorini of Gods and lava is the dream of a lifetime. Here, walking the whitewashed alleys of the Caldera, you will discover some missing pieces of your soul.

Must see The volcanoes of Santorini Scientists support that volcanic activity on Santorini started 1.5 million years ago and resulted in the creation of a conical island the ancients called Stroggyli. The formation of the current volcanoes of Santorini essentially began with the so-called Minoan eruption, when the volcanic cone of Stroggyli blew up and created the Caldera. The two volcanic islands of Palea and Nea Kameni, that lie currently in the center of the Caldera, were formed during the post-minoan volcanic activity. Palea Kameni began to be created after a volcanic eruption in 46-47 AD, while Nea Kameni

Must see The volcanoes of Santorini gradually from 1570 to 1950, after a series of violent volcanic eruptions. The most popular sea excursion is a visit to the two islands-volcanoes, with small boats departing from Athinios (new harbor) or Yialos (old harbor of Fira). The islet of Nea Kameni is the youngest volcanic fallow land in the Eastern Mediterranean. It has been listed as a place of historical and outstanding natural beauty and you can walk to the crater of the volcano. The island of Palea Kameni has joined the Community network of protected areas NATURA 2000.

Must see The Caldera If you sail around the Caldera, you can admire a unique natural monument created by the volcanic eruption in 1600 B C. The veins of the volcanic rocks, the geological structures of the lava layers and the slags are the pages of an interesting geological phenomenon that is at least 10,000 years old. Thira, Thirassia and Aspronisi, with their circular arrangement, currently define the perimeter of the Caldera that has an area of 83 sq.km and a maximum depth of 380 meters, while its diameter (10 km) makes it the largest in the world. Its subsidence and formation was a complex process that was completed after several episodes of collapse, and in the long run.

Must see Fira Built on top of the island s west side, Fira impresses visitors with its residential set. Santorini s capital remains a vibrant town all year round, while the Caldera and Theotokopoulou Square are its busiest spots. Start your tour of the Caldera from the point where the Orthodox Cathedral of Ypapanti Sotiros stands. Just opposite, there is one of the most popular spots to enjoy the views over the volcanoes. On Ypapantis street, extending to your right as you look at the sea, you will find many stores and jewelry shops. To the north of Fira lies the district of Fragkomachalas. Here, you can see old mansions, the Catholic Cathedral, the Monastery of Lazaristes, the Gkyzi mansion, the Monastery of Dominican Sisters and the Monastery of the Sisters of Mercy. On Nomikou street, you will admire the imposing building of the P. Nomikos Foundation and the restored Goulas, once the settlement s core.

Must see Firostefani Walk along the old path of the Caldera that connects Fira to Firostefani, enjoying the view over the volcanoes. In Firostefani there are cafés, taverns, hotels and restaurants, and its attractions include the church of Aghios Gerassimos with the cypresses and the church of Aghioi Theodoroi with the old icon on the iconostasis.

Must see Imerovigli In the late 16th century, Imerovigli was a large and thriving settlement, built on the highest point of the Caldera. The earthquake of 1956 destroyed a large part of it, but Imerovigli today has been restored in its entirety and the excellent tourist infrastructure attracts high-end vacationers. Its main points of interest are the church of the Resurrection (with the characteristic blue dome) and the church of Panagia Malteza, while the ideal spot to enjoy the sunset is the site of the castle in Skaros, where the medieval capital of Santorini was built.

Must see Oia Celebrated internationally for its sunsets, Oia is one of the most beautiful Cycladic settlements, filled with colorful undercut cave structures, simple churches, captains houses, luxury hotels, restaurants, cafés, bars and shops of all kinds. Every year, thousands of visitors pay homage to Oia, the architectural jewel of Santorini. The major attractions of Oia include the churches of Platsani, Eisodia tis Theotokou and Aghios Nikolaos, the Maritime Museum, the Museum of Musical Instruments and the Venetian Goulas, from where you can admire the sunset.

Must see Pyrgos It was listed among the preserved traditional settlements of Greece since 1995. Surrounded by vineyards and featuring a well preserved medieval castle on the top of the hill where it was built, Pyrgos Kallistis is a true ambassador of the authentic Cycladic architecture. In the summer, Pyrgos receives daily dozens of visitors who wander around the cobblestone streets, climb up to the castle to admire the beauty of the architecture, see the old churches and the exhibits of the Ecclesiastical Collection and the Vanishing Santorini folklore museum. In Pyrgos there are shops, picturesque taverns, café-bars and fine dinning restaurants.

Must see Ancient Thira

Must see Ancient Thira German archaeologist Hiller von Gaertringen was the one who first brought to light (1896-1902) the city of Ancient Thira, which was until the end of antiquity the urban, administrative and religious center of the city-state of Thira. The large-scale excavations carried out by the German archaeologist in Mesa Vouno (meaning inner mountain), at an altitude of 396 m, revealed mainly the Hellenistic and Roman phase of the city, while the Curator of Antiquities Nikos Zafeiropoulos brought to light later (1961-1982) the cemeteries of Sellada. The most important monuments of the ancient city, founded in the 9th century BC by Dorian colonists and inhabited until the early Byzantine period, include the Agora, the Shrine of Artemidorus, the Temple of Dionysos, the Youth Gymnasium, the Royal Gallery, the Temple of Karneios Apollo and the Theatre. Tel. +30 22860 23217

Must see The castle and Goulas of Emporeio The major attraction of the village of Emporeio is the well-preserved Castelli, a masterpiece of medieval architecture. It belonged to the type of fortified settlement created from a central core around which the fortification walls were developed, with the external walls of houses forming the fort. Inside the castle lies the church of Evangelismos (Panagia Messiani), while the area outside of the Kastelli is dominated by the Goulas, a tower-observatory that also protected lords and inhabitants from pirate raids.

Must see Museums Museum of Prehistoric Thira/Fira It hosts selected findings from the thousands found on the island, which outline the course of Thira during prehistoric times. The museum also hosts the murals and the movable findings from the archaeological site of Akrotiri (17th cent. BC), as well as findings from other location in Thira, dating from the 5th millennium BC (Neolithic period) until the 17th century BC. Tel. +30 22860 23217 Archaeological Museum/Fira In the halls of the museum you can see, among others, sculptures and inscriptions from the Archaic to the Roman era, ceramics, clay figurines from the Geometric to the Hellenistic era etc. Tel. +30 22860 22217
