He planned a trip at ITB 2011, but never happened. He would like to come to the region soon. Says his time is limited. 2012 he will have a strong focus on the Capitol Region. Topics for a potential story and fam tour to our region were discussed -- outdoor adventure/activities, hiking, biking, canoeing, etc., scenic byways. Is thinking a June 2013 trip would be possible. May have ideas for the trip by PowWow 2012. Will contact Janine to discuss options, but please follow up. Send materials packets for him to research. ITB11: German journalist writing mainly for FAZ. In 2004 went to the Buffalo RU and in 2001 went to Wyoming for ski (Jackson). Looking for an activity focused fam to our region. Ideas include hiking and bicycling. We discussed the Hiawatha Trail and Mickelson Trail, zip lines, walk in the trees, climbing Devils Tower and interpretive walk around the base, Top 10 Scenic Drives. Will begin to organize the potential fam through Carola. Mr. Mehnert may combine this fam tour with something else. GER10/09: DIE WELT - This is a German National daily newspaper with a circulation of approx. 264,628 and approximately 670.000 readers. In their Travel supplement in the weekend edition on Saturday October 24, 2009 they published a long article written by Wolfgang Mehnert. It is called Die Praerie und ihr Fluss (The prairie and its river) and talks about the Missouri River flowing through the prairie States also through Montana and South Dakota. The article starts out with a description of a peaceful scene along the mighty river, mentioning the wide-open spaces and the buffalo herds. Wolfgang then tells the reader about the Lewis & Clark expedition, Sitting Bull and the battle of the Little Bighorn as well as the history and the culture of the Native tribes in the area. A last part concentrates on the sights in the region, mentioning the new Casino in Mobridge, the varied wildlife, which can be seen as pronghorn antelope and deer and suggests a tour through the Great Plains as a wonderful experience of the true wild west. In addition our contact details and the German Real America website are provided. Author: Volker Mehnert Publication Date: October 24, 2009 Length: 2/3 page ITB12: Kurt has written a book on the Rocky Mountains that was to be published. The publisher has given the contract back to him. Kurt is thinking of publishing the book online with Kindle or Amazon. He'll add links, color photos and updates. He would like to publish next year when Kindle adds color. ITB06: Met with Mr. Ohlhoff. Talking to Guido about campers and to Pacific North West too. Send Indian info along trad. Will pack up press kits on Monday ITB03: Stopped by to say that German publisher has put all USA regional guidebook updates, inluding Ohloff's Rocky Mountain book, on hold until the war is over, but should resume publishing (with promotion) next year. And he's darned mad about it. Working on Lewis and Clark stories and wants to cover Native American angle. 2002 ITB Buckle Club Participant: Kurt Ohlhoff ITB2002: Dropped by and provided new e-mail and web address which is under construction right now. Getting out of the travel guide business except for edits. Writing for magazines and newspapers. Susanne please copy him in on your newsletter e-mails. Hoping to pitch mini guide book on the Rockies to Merian Live. Did one on Hawaii, very nice. He will be updating the Rocky Mountain book but will change titles to something including National Parks. May come out summer of 2003. May have to do it in Fall. Probably begin and end in Denver. Susanne to talk to UA or NW/KLM about reduced or comped airfare. If it works, will request a regional itin and assistance with some accommodations and attractions. No follow up required. Chuck - send guide book. Attended SRU2000: "Caddis Fly" Kurt J. Mathias spoke with him at the Canusa Party and he said it was absolutely fantastic. Canusa is now going more toward emotional aspects in their product offering. Needs state photos. Now has an introduction page for Rocky Mountain product keying in on emotions. Fly/Drives include 'Taste of the Rockies,' 'Western Flair,' and 'Bisons & Badlands.' Their numbers are up. The entire region, including ND and CO are performing very well. Anngret suggested asking Gary to confirm. Discussed several marketing options. Janine, please follow up for details and costs of a proposal to include in Summit materials. GER01/12: Tilo with his son, to go skiing in Jackson Hole, with very short notice. Requested support by JHMR for rentals and ski passes for the time he is there. He will take care of rental car, airfair and hotel rooms himself. Dates: January 9 through 17, 2012. Would also like to experience a snowmobiling or wildlife watching tour in Grand Teton NP or in/around Jackson. Canusa does offer trips into Yellowstone NP already, so Tilo would like to experience something new, which he then will also consider as new product in the winter 2012/13 brochure. GER11/11: Received the latest Canusa E-Newsletter. In it they also promoted their ski product to Jackson, Wyoming with two specials offers on it. Package includes one week stay, ski passes, transfers and breakfast at the Best Western Lodge at Jackson Hole and a second one for the Alpenhof Lodge at Teton Village. Booking from now, travel period between December 2011 and April 2012 with special dates excluded from the offer. GER10/11: Canusa will implement QR Codes in their 2012 catalogues. They have published a new ITB12: Met with Friedrich Roth. Finished 2011 with plus bookings. January/February is a good booking time. Discussed "Destination of the Month" online promotion. This includes 10-15 images, 2 videos, map, insider views, destination details, several topics of interest, all of which is connected to bookable product. Looks like a good promotion and we could coop with GW Cities and Partners to reduce individual cost. Up to seven boxes (topics) available. Using Facebook, Travelzoo to send visitors to this promotion. Friedrich mentioned it was really popular with other US destinations. The feature would run for one month, but stays online longer. Cost is $8,000 and he mentioned that October- March is the best time to run the campaign. Everyone seemed to like it. Would provide click and booking stats. We provide all media and content, and any translation is included in above mentioned cost. Uses A4Y and Travalco. Janine please follow up with details and include in Summit proposals. Drives between hiking locations. We mentioned "Rails to Trails" as an options and covered general ideas. Follow up with info. Alta Expeditions is doing all of the guiding. Would be happy to receive ideas for new hiking options. Manfred was on the 2006 Mega Fam in ID/WY. Janine, please follow up. GER11/10: Personal visit in Munich and meeting with Manfred Haeupl, Managing Director. Niche tour operator specialzing in outdoor, hiking and adventure tours. Mainly groups. Their USP is that they always send two guides with the groups and feature new itineraries and "undiscovered" destinations than other operators in their niche. Finally can feature more US product as they found a very reliable agency called Alta Expeditons (Canada based), which has a licence to guide in the National Parks. Their best selling destination is still Nepal. Feature two new tours into the RMI region - summer and winter including Montana, Idaho and Wyoming - highlight of course Yellowstone National Park. This is also due to Manfred's participation in the RMI Mega Fam 2007. See US as high now potential destination, felt a lot of resistance from their clients during the Bush years. Want to further divide their product in seperate product lines: general hiking group tours, Mountainbiking, vacation with kids, winter adventure (no downhill skiing). Discussed possibilities for marketing cooperations. Events similar to Columbia Sportswear, Flyer printing also as supplement in high potential magazines, participation in the Hauser annual Roadshow - in cooperation with Globetrotter (outdoor clothing). Will follow up and stay in contact with Manfred. GER07/08:German Trekking. Asked about program in 2009 and possible inclusion of the RMI region. Unfortunately have decided not to include RMI region in 2009. However, definitely keep in mind for 2010, as demand for the US is rising. Canada Tours do not sell at all currently - USA is best seller. Are very interested in Grand Teton NP and Glacier NP, but see great problems regarding guided hiking tours in Nationalparks. Own guides are not allowed, Hauser has to engage Rangers etc. which is not only an organizational

GER08/11: Met personally with Lukas Schultheiss. 2011 was again a very good season for them and they could defend their status as leading US specialist on the Swiss Market. Generally feel that the fall vacation is very important for the Swiss traveler, which takes place 2-3 weeks during October. Will re-launch their website in November 2011, will then feature more information for clients and their 23 travel agencies throughout Switzerland. At that point also will celebrate their 50th birthday with a large event and again invited our destinations to participate. Have several sponsorship packages but also a "light version" with only brochure distribution. Await not only their regular clients and all travel agents, but also Swiss celebrities.
