You start your trip in the baroque town of Schärding or in the Land hotel directly at the Inn River. You will cycle through various districts of Upper and Lower Austria and finally to the Danube metropolis of Vienna. You will love the breathtaking natural beauty of the Danube valley and the Schlögen bend or perhaps you will fall in love with the landscapes along the Danube River such as the Machland, the Strudengau, or the famous Wachau. In the rural areas, to accompany these wonderful impressions, you can enjoy many traditional Austrian delicacies. Your physical wellbeing will be well catered for, from savory dumpling specialties and moreish must all the way to the wines of the Buschenschenken taverns in the Wachau region. Itinerary Day to Day Day 1: Arrival in Schärding or in Wernstein Tour briefing and distribution of rental bikes. Stroll through the pretty little baroque town of Schärding or enjoy your first evening in the Land hotel. Day 2: Schärding/Wernstein Upper Danube Valley 55 km You will cycle along the river Inn to the three river city, Passau. Here, we recommend a short city tour or a visit to the cathedral, where you can listen to the largest church organ in the world (except Sundays and holidays). Then, you will continue your journey along the Danube via Obernzell to Engelhartszell (the only Trappist monastery in Austria, liquor tasting) and further through the nature reserve Donauleiten. Day 3: Upper Danube Valley Linz 55 km Today you will cycle through the green Eferdinger basin via the market towns of Aschach, Ottensheim and Wilhering and all the way to the Upper Austrian capital of Linz. The historical Old Town of Linz has many pubs and eateries for you to discover. Other highlights of the European Capital of Culture 2009 include the magnificent views from Pöstlingberg Mountain and a stroll through the Donaulände Park. In Enns, you can go to the town square with its 60 meter town tower, the landmark of the oldest town in Austria, or you can visit the archaeological collection in the municipal museum Lauriacum. In the beautiful baroque town of Grein you will have the opportunity to get an impression of the oldest still performing city theatre in Austria. Additionally, you can visit the maritime museum or Greinburg castle.
Day 5: Grein Wachau 65 km The Strudengau once feared by the sailors is now awaiting the cyclists. Where once the currents of the Danube had to be fought against, one can now cycle comfortably. In Maria Taferl and Melk you can see magnificent churches located high above the Danube, which attract thousands of visitors each year. Day 6: Wachau Traismauer/surroundings 65 km You will continue your tour to the 1,000 year old town of Krems. On the way, the monastery Göttweig, located high above the Danube, leads the way to the flower city of Tulln. Day 7: Traismauer/surroundings Vienna 40 km Your tour ends in the Danube metropolis of Vienna. Don t forget to visit the Wurstelprater, the vibrant entertainment area of Vienna s Prater and experience its positive mood.
