Sailing the Canal: Colón to Puntarenas Aboard Sea Cloud II Dear Members and Friends of The Metropolitan Museum of Art, Please join me this winter to discover the natural wonders and cultural splendors of, Nicaragua, and as we explore tropical rain forests and colonial cities, sail through spectacular archipelagos, and transit the Canal aboard the elegant sailing yacht Sea Cloud II. The voyage offers a rare opportunity to discover the flora and fauna of the isthmus that bridges the American continents one of the richest and most diverse ecospheres on earth while savoring the ambiance of a classic sailing ship and experiencing the engineering marvel of the Canal. A vital site of transit and exchange since the early colonial era, it is the setting for the oldest European settlements on the American mainland. Join me in touring archeological and historical sites in cities founded by conquistadors at the beginning of the sixteenth century on the coast of the newly discovered Pacific Ocean, at the very edge of the known world. Traveling with us from Harvard University will be professor emeritus Harvey V. Fineberg MD, PhD, and adjunct professor Mary Elizabeth Wilson, MD. Sincerely, Ronda Kasl Curator of Latin American Art, American Wing The Metropolitan Museum of Art Ronda Kasl Ronda Kasl is Curator of Latin American Art in the American Wing at The Metropolitan Museum of Art, where she oversees the growth of a new collection area and the planning of related exhibitions. As a specialist in the art of Spain and Spanish America, she lectures widely and is the author of numerous books and articles, including Sacred Spain: Art and Belief in the Spanish World (2009) and The Making of Hispano-Flemish Style: Art, Commerce and Politics in Fifteenth-Century Castile (2014). Dr. Kasl holds degrees in art and art history from the University of Tulsa and the Institute of Fine Arts, New York University. D Canal Transit/ Balboa, Tuesday, February 21 Experience a daytime transit through the man-made lakes and three sets of locks that comprise the 48-mile-long Canal. In the early evening arrive in City s port of Balboa, located on the Pacific Ocean, where the ship remains docked overnight. Tonight enjoy an onboard Latin jazz concert by talented musicians and students from s Danilo Pérez Foundation. City, Wednesday, February 22 Following a morning architectural tour of the UNESCO-recognized Casco Viejo (Old Quarter), or a visit to the Museum of Contemporary Art, explore the innovative Museum of Biodiversity, architect Frank Gehry s first project in Latin America, which explains how the formation of the Isthmus of changed the world three million years ago.
