Resort Information The Portes du Soleil region, which straddles the French-Swiss border, is made up of twelve major winter sport resorts. On the French side you have: Avoriaz, Morzine, Les Gets, Châtel, Morgins, Saint-Jeand Aulps, Montriond On the Swiss side are Champéry, Les Crosets, Val d Illiez and Champoussin. Getting there The closest resorts to Geneva are Morzine and Les Gets which are just one hour by car. Avoriaz and Châtel are one hour and 30 minutes from Geneva. There are plenty of flights from within Europe by airlines such as www.easyjet.com and plenty of long-haul flights too. The lift system of 209 lifts allows skiers to cross borders freely and take a circular ski tour through two of the French resorts (Avoriaz and Châtel) and a number of the smaller Swiss resorts. You will enjoy unbeatable views and a real sense of discovery. This is the world s largest linked international ski area with over 650km of pistes up to 2275m and with an excellent snow making system of over 800 snow cannons. The ease of access and range of attractive villages makes this a popular destination in both winter and summer. The proximity to lake Geneva and the summer resorts of Evian and Annecy make the Portes du Soleil an excellent base.
Avoriaz Situated just over an hour from Geneva, Avoriaz, at 1800m is the highest resort in the Portes du Soleil. This car-free, ski-in, ski-out resort is perched on a dramatic south-facing cliff top with spectacular views. Everything is accessible on skis or by horsedrawn sleigh, and the stunning wooden architecture of this purpose built ski resort won awards from the Architectural Académie. Chatel This is the smallest and most rustic of the major resorts in the French part of the Portes du Soleil. Some of the chalets date back to the sixteenth century, offering this resort genuine French charm. Situated in a valley very close to Lake Geneva, Châtel has an efficient bus service to the nearby villages making it easy to leave the car at home. Châtel is the perfect resort for those who want a more relaxed Alpine retreat.
Morzine This traditional market town has wooden facades and slate-covered roofs but its services and infrastructure are in line with the demands of modern tourism. Nestled among forests, Morzine stretches along both sides of the river and the town has huge choice of shops and restaurants. Les Gets This is a sunny village of traditional chalet style buildings just ten minutes from Morzine. The main street is lined with shops and restaurants. The centre is pedestrian only and has an ice skating rink. Les Gets has a quiet ambience during the week, but livens up at weekends. St Jean d Aulps Just ten minutes from Les Gets and Morzine this pretty, traditional village is one of the 12 villages which form the Portes du Soleil ski area. With some lovely slopes of it s own and easy connections to the busier resorts this makes a perfect base for visitors to the area.
Winter Whether on skis or a board there s something for everyone in this area, whether it be the cruisey reds and blues of Morzine or the snow parks in Avoriaz. The Portes du Soleil ski area is enormous with 650km of piste and plenty of off-piste too all at an altitude of up to 2275m. The lift system of 209 lifts allows skiers to cross borders freely, connecting to various resorts all over the region. The main Portes du Soleil ski area is most easily accessed via Avoriaz and Chatel. Both resorts offer plenty of ski in / ski out, with immediate access to the larger ski area. Most lifts in the area have been recently rennovated, providing quick, easy access across the Portes du Soleil area. Expert s Opinion Our ski expert Fenella Hunter says: The Portes du Soleil area is great skiing; not too challenging for beginners, but not limited either. Chatel is probably the best resort to go for in the area, because it s a traditional resort linked into the main ski area. I m also very fond of the laid back vibe of Les Gets and the striking architecture in Avoriaz. Morzine is slightly off to one side of the main ski area, but the Super-Morzine lift is an excellent way to get right to the middle of the Avoriaz and the Portes du Soleil ski area from there. The other side of the Morzine ski area is shared with Les Gets, offering a good sized area mostly dominated by red and blue runs for skiers and boarders of all ability levels.
Summer In summer the ski slopes are perfect for trekking and mountain biking. The Portes du Soleil has become renowned as the prime place for mountain bikers. There is 650km of sign-posted tracks, 10 permanent downhill runs, 4 bike parks and 24 ski-lifts equipped for taking mountain bikes. Aside from mountain biking one can also use the same routes for hiking and there are special climbing areas too. For a more relaxing activity you can go to one of the five swimming pools or even to one of the nearby lakes which is a real treat. On the water there are opportunities for white water rafting, and you can go canyoning to get a taste of all the activities. With Lake Geneva and the resort of Evian is just over half an hour away, and other resorts close by, it s very easy to have a change of scenery and there is plenty to do.
