Voices in Harmony CONCERT TOUR OF SPAIN June 21 28, 2018 1

PERFORM IN SPAIN! Visiting Spain opens a window into a country of rich culture, character, and festivity. Undeniably unique in so many ways, Spain has been one of the major cultural centers of Europe for thousands of years. Its extraordinary artistic heritage extends from grand achievements in painting, architecture, and music. Renowned painters such as El Greco, Salvador Dali, and Pablo Picasso transformed trends in art. It was in Andalusia that the first guitar was invented in the 1790s. Later, Andres Segovia of Spain took this invention to new heights by establishing the classical guitar as a genre. Paco de Lucia eventually became the best-known flamenco guitarist in the world. Music is at the heart of Spanish culture, and the country has had a substantial impact on the western musical tradition. Though best known for traditions like flamenco and the Spanish guitar, Spanish music varies widely from region to region. When traveling to Barcelona and Valencia, these distinctive sounds and characteristics can be heard on the streets and in the concert halls. Reflected in that music is the culture of people who find this expression integral to their lives and well-being. Enjoy a concert tour of Spain, and let yourself be immersed in all that Spain has to offer as you share your music with local people. 2

THURSDAY, JUNE 21, 2018 DEPART FOR SPAIN IN FLIGHT Depart from Boston on an overnight flight bound for Barcelona, Spain. Select meals, snacks, and refreshments will be served on board the flight. Be sure to read through the great tips and travel information in your Music Contact International handbook! FRIDAY, JUNE 22, 2018 WELCOME TO BARCELONA! Arrive this morning in Barcelona, the vibrant capital of the Spanish autonomous community of Catalonia. Upon arrival, your Music Contact International tour manager will greet you at the airport. Together, meet your waiting motor coach and embark on a panoramic sightseeing tour of Barcelona. Get your first glimpse of the iconic Sagrada Familia Cathedral and fabulous Casas Mila and Batllo. See Plaza Catalunya at the top of the pedestrian zone of Las Ramblas and Montjuic, the hill that rises above Barcelona and is home to a multitude of sports complexes, museums, and cultural centers. See the Columbus Monument, honoring Christopher Columbus first voyage to the Americas, peering out over the sea as the famous explorer would have done. This afternoon, transfer to your hotel to check in, refresh, and get settled. Stretch your legs and get an introduction to the hotel neighborhood on an orientation walk with your tour manager. Tonight, a special welcome dinner of local specialties including tapas a delicious assortment of small Spanish savory dishes will be arranged for your group at an atmospheric restaurant. 3

SATURDAY, JUNE 23, 2018 MONTSERRAT Begin your first full day in Spain with breakfast in the hotel dining room before taking a stroll in the Gothic Quarter on a guided city tour. Your local English-speaking guide will lead you through the dramatic works of the modernist architect Antoni Gaudí. From private residences to public parks and even his famous cathedral, La Sagrada Familia, Gaudí s organic Art Nouveau style was all his own. One of the highlights will be the Parc Guell, a world heritage site designated as Antoni Gaudí s most colorful creation. With its Room of 100 Columns and Gran Placa Circular of snaking mosaics, the park is one of the most photographed sites in the city. Gaudí s fanciful Casa Mila and Palau Guell have also become symbols of the city's unique, colorful and contemporary character. Afterward, there will be time for shopping and sightseeing and time to enjoy lunch. Remember that Spaniards traditionally eat their main meal at lunch time! In the late afternoon, transfer to Montserrat. Although it is best known for its monastery and shrine, Montserrat also offers some of the most spectacular mountain views and unusual rock formations in all of Catalonia; its natural beauty parallels its religious importance. Spend time exploring in small groups. Perhaps visit the Santa Maria Montserrat Abbey, where you can find the famous statue of the Virgin of Montserrat sitting at the top of the altar. Alternatively, take a ride up the funicular Sant Joan. You ll see stunning views of the monastery, the Pyrenees mountains, and the picturesque countryside below. Tonight the evening is yours to discover Barcelona and enjoy dinner at one of its many excellent restaurants! SUNDAY, JUNE 24, 2018 DALÍ MUSEUM After breakfast at the hotel, embark on an excursion to Figueres and Cadaques. First make your way to Figueres, a town whose name translates in Catalan to fig trees. See the Sant Ferran Castle, an expansive fortress and one of the most impressive landmarks in all of Catalonia, and the Iglesia de San Pedro, a Gothic church with a large bell tower. Have lunch on your own at a local vendor or quaint cafe in the side-streets of Old Town Figueres. 4

As part of your excursion, visit the Dalí Theatre-Museum dedicated to the works of Figueres-born artist Salvador Dalí. The museum building itself is an attraction resembling Dalí s eccentric style, and the artist is buried in a crypt below the stage. The museum contains a vast collection of the prolific artist s work. In the afternoon, depart for the city of Cadaques nestled in a bay on the Cap de Creus peninsula. Spend the evening walking along the Mediterranean s beautiful Costa Brava and have dinner at a local eatery of your choice. MONDAY, JUNE 25, 2018 FREE DAY IN BARCELONA FRIENDSHIP CONCERT* Following breakfast in the hotel dining room, enjoy a free morning and afternoon in Barcelona. Perhaps visit the Gothic Quarter and its many peaceful squares (plaças) where you can relax and enjoy your surroundings. One of the main attractions right in the heart of the district is the Cathedral which has a stunning courtyard full of plants and resident population of geese. Shopping is also fabulous in this neighborhood, from the more commercial area of Calle Portal de L Angel to the many little boutiques on Calle Avinyo. Another highlight to check out on your own is Montjuïc, the majestic hill on the south side of the city which features both cultural and recreational opportunities. The view from the National Museum in Montjuic and the Font Magica are glorious as well Later, return to your hotel to prepare for your evening performance. This evening, Voices in Harmony will perform a friendship concert alongside a choir from Catalonia*. When the concert concludes, enjoy time to exchange with the host singers. Tonight, a night of flamenco is arranged for the group with dinner. Originating in Southern Spain around the province of Andalusia in the 18 th century, flamenco is one of the most iconic expressions of Spanish culture. While flamenco may not be native to Catalunya, there are a number of places to see and learn about the dancing and musical accompaniment. Enjoy the show! TUESDAY, JUNE 26, 2018 VALENCIA After an early breakfast in the hotel, check out and depart for Valencia. Rest stops will be made along the way. Located in the southeast near the Mediterranean Sea, Valencia is one of Europe s most 5

agriculturally successful areas and Spain s third largest city. Its warm climate lends to the success of the orange groves and fresh markets in the area and also creates an atmosphere geared toward enjoying everyday activities outside. Upon arrival in Valencia, there will be time to buy lunch. There will be plenty of restaurants and fresh markets galore! Following lunch, meet your local English-speaking guide and embark on a guided city tour of Valencia. The city is surrounded by rice paddies, orange orchards, and the sea. Stroll through the ancient winding streets of the Barrio del Carmen, which contain buildings dating to Roman and Arabic times. The Cathedral of Valencia, built between the 13th and 15th century, is primarily of Gothic style but contains elements of Baroque and Romanesque architecture. Besides the Cathedral you will see the Plaça de la Verge, which includes the Basilica of the Virgin (Basílica De La Virgen De Los Desamparados) and the Turia Fountain. The 15th century Serrano and Quart towers are part of what was once the wall surrounding the city. Pass through the largest square in Valencia, the Plaça de l'ajuntament, which contains the town hall, a cinema, and many restaurants and bars. Check into your Valencia hotel and take some time to relax and refresh before dinner. A tasty dinner of regional specialties will be prepared for your group this evening. WEDNESDAY, JUNE 27, 2018 CIUTAT DE LES ARTS I LES CIÈNCIES FRIENDSHIP CONCERT* Following breakfast in the hotel, visit the futuristic City of Arts and Sciences (Ciutat de les Arts i les Ciències). Designed by the world-renowned architect Santiago Calatrava, the complex contains an opera house and performing arts center, a science museum, an IMAX cinema, and an oceanographic park among its many structures. Calatrava is also responsible for the bridge named after him in the center of the city. Afterwards, enjoy a free afternoon at your leisure in Valencia exploring the city s historic relics. We suggest climbing to the top of the Miguelete Cathedral s bell tower for a spectacular view of the city. You may enjoy a visit to Museo del Gremio Artistas Falleras, where artists and craftsmen labor all year to build the elaborate paper mache sculptures that are burned on St. Joseph s Day. This evening, Voices in Harmony will perform a friendship concert with a local host choir*. The concert will be held in a church, theater or concert hall and there will be time to meet and mingle with your host choir after the concert. Tonight, a festive farewell dinner will be served to your group at a local restaurant. There will be ample opportunity to recount the many highlights of your tour! 6
