A Family Learning Adventure in the Ancient Mediterranean Harvard Alumni Association 2014 Worldwide Travel Program New Rates No Single Supplement 2014 Italy Croatia Greece Turkey Voyage to the Lands of Gods & Heroes Aboard the 50-Suite Corinthian July 3 14, 2014 With Jonathan L. Walton, Plummer Professor of Christian Morals, Pusey Minister in the Memorial Church and Professor of Religion and Society

Voyage to the Lands of Gods & Heroes July 3-14, 2014 trip overview Dodoni, Greece Aboard the all-suite Corinthian, embark on a voyage of discovery in the Mediterranean, where ancient cities, idyllic islands, myth, and history are intertwined. Visit some of the seminal sites of the Classical world Athens, Olympia, Ephesus, and Rhodes, as well as the great cities of Venice and Dubrovnik and enlighten the senses and ignite the imagination of your children or grandchildren. Create memories of shared learning and discovery as you explore this remarkable region as a family. Grandparents, parents, and children will learn about Greek and Roman history, literature, mythology, and culture while walking among the ruins of these civilizations. Experienced youth education counselors will lead groups of similarly aged children and young adults in the Young Explorers Program educational and recreational activities developed to enhance their appreciation of the sites visited, from discovering how archaeologists piece together the past to competing in a mock Olympics on its original grounds. Adults enjoy an engaging lecture series. Your HAA Study Leader is Jonathan L. Walton from Harvard s Memorial Church, a social ethicist and scholar of American religions. A lecturer from Yale will also accompany the voyage. Your ship, the delightful Corinthian, features 50 suites (each with sea views) as well as inviting public areas and fine dining, all fostering a friendly and gracious ambience. For detailed itineraries VISIT ALUMNI.HARVARD.EDU/HAA/TRAVEL

HARVARD study leader Jonathan L. Walton is the Plummer Professor of Christian Morals and a professor of religion and society at Harvard Divinity School. He also serves as the Pusey Minister in the Memorial Church. Walton earned his Ph.D. and master of divinity degrees from Princeton Theological Seminary. He served as an assistant professor of religious studies at the University of California, Riverside prior to joining the faculty of Harvard Divinity School. His course offerings address theories of religion, myth and ritual, as well as the intersections of power, ethnicity, and gender in popular culture. His lecture offerings on the voyage will include In Search of a Superman: God of Steel Myths from Hercules to Kal-El and Pandora s Forbidden Fruit: Ritual Scapegoating and the Feminine in the Ancient World. Additional Lecturer Pauline LeVen, Assistant Professor of Greek Language and Literature at Yale University, was born in Monaco and trained in France. She studied at the Ecole Normale Supérieure (Paris), the Sorbonne and Princeton University, and earned a PhD from both. She was a Fulbright student in 2001-02 and the Phi Beta Kappa Sibley Fellow in Greek Studies in 2007-08, before she joined the Yale faculty in 2008. Her first book, The Many-Headed Muse: Tradition and Innovation in Late Classical Greek Lyric Poetry, received the Heyman Prize from Yale College for outstanding scholarly publication. She is now at work on a new book devoted to Greek and Roman myths about music. Praised by her students for her enthusiasm, Professor LeVen is always glad to share her knowledge of ancient culture. SCHEDULE BY DAY Thursday, July 3, 2014 FLY FROM USA Friday, July 4 VENICE, Italy EMBARK Arrive in legendary, canal-lined Venice and transfer to Corinthian. The ship spends the night in Venice. (D) Saturday, July 5 VENICE This morning explore some of Venice s main landmarks, including St. Mark s Basilica, and the Doge s Palace, the seat of Venetian power. Young Explorers will have a choice of learning about one of Venice s artisanal crafts mask-making in the traditional Venetian style or gondola construction. (B, L, D) Sunday, July 6 DUBROVNIK, Croatia The morning is at sea with special activities for Young Explorers. Then arrive in Dubrovnik, one of Europe s best-preserved medieval cities, beautifully set on the Adriatic Sea. Enjoy afternoon sightseeing, including a hike for Young Explorers around the city s medieval walls. Visit the Franciscan and Dominican Monasteries, view works by Titian and Andrea del Sarto in the Baroque Cathedral, and see the courtyard of the Rector s Palace. (B, L, D) Monday, July 7 IGOUMENITSA, Greece DODONI IGOUMENITSA Call at Igoumenitsa and travel to Dodoni, the oldest oracular site in Greece, perhaps dating to 1000 b.c. Beautifully situated in a valley below Mt. Tomaros, the site includes a superb theater, built during the reign of King Pyrrhus (3 rd century b.c.) With walls 65 feet high and a seating capacity of 20,000, it was the second largest theater in Greece, and was later used by the Romans for gladiatorial events. Enjoy a feta cheese and olive tasting en route back to the ship. (B, L, D) Tuesday, July 8 KATAKOLON OLYMPIA KATAKOLON Travel to Olympia, an ancient sanctuary dedicated to Zeus and one of four sites where the Pan-Hellenic games were held. Young Explorers will enjoy competing in Olympic games staged for them at the site of the ancient games. Enjoy the afternoon at sea with special Young Explorer activities. (B, L, D) Wednesday, July 9 RETHYMNON, Crete KNOSSOS or IMBROS GORGE RETHYMNON Arrive in Crete, once home of the Minoans, Europe s earliest developed civilization. From quaint Rethymnon, travel to Knossos and its fabled Minoan Palace, a maze of frescoed corridors and chambers showing life as it was 4,000 years ago. It is also home to the labyrinth of the legendary Minotaur. Then spend free time to explore Rethymnon and swim at a nearby beach. Alternatively, walk part of the rugged, scenic Imbros Gorge, ending at the coast, near the 14 th -century Venetian castle of Frangokastello, for a swim. Then sail along Crete s northwest coast to anchor near the isle of Gramvousa, an old Venetian stronghold, for another swim. (B, L, D) Thursday, July 10 SANTORINI In the second millennium b.c., volcanic eruptions shrouded Santorini (or Phira) in pumice and ash and collapsed the island into a fractured caldera. This ultimately produced Santorini s wild, multihued beauty while sending its Minoan civilization into irreversible decline. Adults will visit Phira s Archaeological Museum while Young Explorers board a sailboat to Nea Kameni, the island in the center of Santorini s caldera, and ascend to its volcano by donkey to learn about the area s geology. Reunite for lunch and free time in Phira Town. (B, L, D) Friday, July 11 RHODES LINDOS The historic island of Rhodes was known in antiquity for its schools of philosophy, rhetoric, and sculpture. Today it boasts one of Europe s largest medieval towns. Discover Old Town s winding streets and splendid plazas, which owe their 14 th -century charm to the Crusader Knights of St. John. In the lovely village of Lindos, take a donkey ride or walk up to the acropolis, set on a cliff 400 feet above the sea, with stunning views of the village and bay below. Or, opt to explore Lindos on your own or swim in the crystal waters of its white-sand beach. (B, L, D) Rethymnon, Crete For detailed itineraries VISIT ALUMNI.HARVARD.EDU/HAA/TRAVEL
