Discover The Mekong Delta A region rich in the charm of river life, pastoral beauty and community spirit. Geography Can Tho, the fourth largest city in Vietnam, is regarded as the Rice Bowl of Vietnam and the leading city of the Mekong Delta, The Delta is also known as Cuu Long, or Nine Dragons, referring to the nine tributaries of the Mekong River. Each year the tributaries flow through the Delta, enriching the soil with tons of alluvial sediments. Every morning fishermen and farmers take their sampans or motored junks through meandering canals that lead to the floating markets and city. History The Mekong Delta was once part of the Khmer Kingdom and was the last region of recent Vietnam to be annexed and settled by the Vietnamese. Can Tho was first established as Tran Giang in 1739, under the stewardship of Mac Thien Tich, the son of governor Mac Cuu. It was controlled by the Cambodians until the late 18th century, and while a claim on the land was tried again by the Khmer Rouge this led to the Vietnamese army ousting the Khmer Rouge from power in 1979. Most of the current inhabitants of the Mekong Delta are ethnic Vietnamese with a significant population of Chinese, Khmer and Chams. Can Tho City, is home to the Can Tho Bridge, the longest cable-stayed bridge in South East Asia. The bridge spanning the Hau River, is 2.75 kilometres long and has a six-lane carriageway with a clearance height of 39 metres to allow large vessels to pass underneath. Today Can Tho is the epicentre of the Mekong Delta.

Facilities Arrival Pavilion and Azerai Pier After travelling to Can Tho City by car or aircraft, the Arrival Pavilion in the city provides a relaxing setting to prepare for the boat transfer to Azerai.
