Due to the success of the New 7 Wonders of the World (more than 100 million voters) and of the 7 Wonders of Portugal (more than 300 thousand voters) in 2007 and, in 2009, of the 7 Portuguese Wonders in the World (239.418 votes), the organisation decided to forestall the global movement around the election of the 7 Natural Wonders in 2011 - Portugal will be the first country in the world to elect its own Natural Wonders, which leads to a vanguard positioning in terms of environment preservation and sustainability. Because 2010 is the International Year of Biodiversity, this project further enhances a worldwide environmental movement which aims at being a reference in the environmental sustainability of our country. The election of the 7 Natural Wonders of Portugal focuses on the Portuguese people s awareness of the importance of preserving our natural heritage. The main purpose is not only to divulge the natural beauty of our landscapes, but also to preserve it. According to the slogan, in order to protect, first you have to get to know it. We d love to show you some natural beauties of Portugal; so here are some pictures and facts about our region and country. As we have so many and various natural resources and touristic places, we had to follow some criteria, and we opted for the 7 natural wonders, result of the national election mentioned above. We hope it ll work as an invitation for you to fly to Portugal and have a wonderful time here.

I. Protected areas Portugal is a unique country whose natural parks and protected areas were created to preserve these green spaces from human action. Map of the protected areas in Portugal Natural Parks Natural Park of Alvão, located in the transition zone between Minho and Trásos-Montes. Fisgas do Ermelo is one of the most interesting places in this park. Its waterfall is one of the largest waterfalls in Europe.

Natural Park of Arrábida lies between Setúbal and Sesimbra - a beautiful area covered with pines and rich vegetation, including many rare species. Douro International Natural Park, located in the region of Trás-os-Montes, Alto Douro and Beira Alta. This park covers the area of the Douro River, which forms a natural border between Portugal and Spain. This park is the habitat of many endangered bird species including the vulture of Egypt that has been chosen as its symbol. Natural Park of Montesinho occupies a 700 square kilometre area in the north of Bragança, in the middle of Transmontana Cold Land. This park is the largest natural park of the twelve parks that exist in the country. Natural Park of Ria Formosa, situated in the Algarve. It includes a submerged area that covers Faro, Loulé, Olhão, Tavira and Vila Real de Santo António.

Natural Park of Serra da Estrela, situated in the largest mountain range in Portugal - Serra da Estrela - is the only place in Portugal with a ski resort. Natural Park of Serra de São Mamede is located in the north eastern tip of Alentejo, on the border of Portugal and Spain. Natural Park of Serra de Aire and Candeeiros covers the area of Estremadura Limestone Massif, comprehending territories belonging to the municipalities of Alcobaça, Porto de Mos, Alcanena, Santarém, Torres Novas and Ourém. The caves of this park are considered one of the seven wonders of Portugal. Natural Park of Sintra-Cascais extends from the northern boundary of the municipality of Sintra, near the mouth of the Falcão River, to the south of the city of Cascais.

Natural Park of Sudoeste Alentejano and Costa Vicentina covers the Atlantic Ocean coastline between S. Torpes and Burgau. The coastline of the natural park is characterized by cliffs, brooks, estuaries and marshes, small beaches and dunes. Tejo International Natural Park covers the valley of the border stretch of the Tagus River, adjoining valleys and adjacent flattened areas. It extends over territory belonging to the municipality of Castelo Branco, Idanha-a-Nova and Vila Velha de Rodão. Natural Park of Vale do Guadiana is located in the middle reaches of the Guadiana River, in the territory belonging to the municipalities of Mértola and Serpa. The area is also famous for its fauna, flora and its geomorphological, historical and cultural interest. National Park of Peneda Gerês is the only Portuguese protected area which is a national park. National Park of Peneda Gerês has got 70290 hectares. Peneda

Gerês has got a lot of natural wealth and it s important to protect all the habitats of this beautiful park. One of the most beautiful places of this park is Mata da Albergaria, one of the reserves of this place. This type of place is very rare and it s invaluable. Peneda Gerês s main attraction is the water as we can see in the picture. II. Beaches and cliffs Portal da Carrapateira - On this beach, we can see high cliffs entering into the sea and there are many plants around it. It s very good for the people who like surfing and practising water sports. Arrábida s Seaport, in Setúbal - It is one of the most beautiful beaches in Portugal, where the white sand and the clear and bright waters establish a fantastic contrast to the imposing austerity of Arrábida. Berlengas Island has about 90 meters. This island has got some different species of ocean birds and it s the passing point for several migratory species. It s a marine reserve of great wild life richness, particularly fish.

Mirad'aire Cave is a major tourist cave in Portugal. This cave was created by the fall of the limestone and it has many beautiful stalactites and stalagmites, wells and small lakes. It is visited by many people from all over the world. III. No marine water beauties Portas de Ródão is a geological formation located near Vila Velha de Ródão, in Castelo Branco, resulting from the intersection of hard relief of Serra das Talhadas with the course of the river Tagus. In Portas de Ródão is set the biggest Holocene Rock Art Complex from the Iberian Peninsula, with more than 25 thousand pecked engravings in schist, result of a remarkable mystical-religious activity in prehistory.

Vale do Douro - What makes Douro such a beautiful place is not only its natural factor but also the man-shaped landscapes. This amazing place is very well-known for its views and excellent wine production. The intensity of colours, scents and environment, the rarity of some species and their importance to the local ecological balance contribute to the survival of elements of the wild fauna, which are irreplaceable values of Douro s natural patrimony. Lagoa das Sete Cidades, scenery of natural beauty and mystery, is located on S. Miguel Island, of which there are lots of legends. Because of its natural grandeur and divine splendour, Sete Cidades is one of the most exciting and beautiful landscapes of Azores archipelago. Sete Cidades s volcano is a place with high importance (geological, ecological, hydrological and landscaping). It s one of the most symbolic images from Azores islands.

IV. Marine zones Besides the fantastic culture and amazing gastronomy, Portugal s beaches hit top priority for many travellers. Portugal's coast faces the full force of the Atlantic Ocean, which causes large waves and has made it a popular location for surfers. Depending on the region, the beaches vary from areas with rocky outcrops to exposed sandy beaches. ng Arrábida Mountain Natural Park. Portinho da Arrábida is one of the most beautiful beaches in the Portuguese coastline, with bright thin sand and luminous crystalline waters, contrasting with the luxuriant vegetation of the greenish Arrábida Mountain, situated in the asto nishi The beach is usually quite crowded during summer months, much frequented by families that find here the perfect calm waters for children, and shelter from the strong coastal winds.

This delightful small beach nestled by the bay has calm crystal blue-green water that is excellent for swimming and diving. The coast of east Algarve has a remarkably mild climate, with sunny days all year round. Winters are usually mild and summers are not that hot. Because of these features, beaches in the Ria Formosa area are well-known, like Ria Formosa Beach. There are many exciting ways to explore Ria Formosa. It s a relaxing and interesting area to discover either by yourself or in a group of tourists. Berlenga, actually named Berlenga Grande, is the main island of the Berlengas archipelago, a nature sanctuary located opposite Peniche, Portugal. The archipelago also includes three small islets: Estelas and Farilhões-

Forcados, as well as Ilha Velha, which used to be the East part of Berlenga Grande, until the day it was separated by the sea erosion. The view on Berlenga s beaches is dead gorgeous, because of their clean and crystalline waters and their white sand. The beaches are known to take the tourists breath away. V. Caves and caverns We live in a country with several natural beauties. When we think about caves, we think of a cold and dark place with bats in a hidden place. However caves in Portugal are the opposite of that; in general, they have natural light. They are located in different places all over the country, which makes them all different from each other; so they all have their own characteristics. Caves close to us Not far from our school, there s a very diverse natural protected area, with different types of natural beauty. In Arrábida, we have around 20 caves, all of them with a unique environment.

1. Cave of Frade 2. Lapa Santa Margarida Cave 2. Abade Cave Other caves in different parts of the country On the coastline, we have one of the seven natural Portuguese beauties, Mira d Aire caves. They are the most beautiful caves, because of the light, which is unique, and there is pure blue water. It s hard to believe that there is so much beauty underground. On the southern coastline, we have the most visited area, which is Algares, in the Algarve, also with a beautiful and unique light, different from Mira d Aire caves, because Algares is outside and in direct contact with the ocean.

VI. Forests and woods Mata dos Medos Mata dos Medos is included in the Protected Fossil Scarps Area of Costa de Caparica, sculpted by the violence of the large oceanic waves of the Quaternary Era, by explosive elements and erosions of the continents. It has an area of 340 hectares. Because of the dunes, king D. João V demanded a plantation in this wood, in XVIII century, to avoid the invasion of the sand through agricultural lands. This brought about the name for this zone: Pinhal do Rei (the king s pinewood). In 1971, the place was classified as a Botanic Reserve.

Fauna The woods are mostly characterized by the presence of stone pine, being constituted by scrub communities, characteristic in the Mediterranean zone, under the influence of the Atlantic Ocean. It possesses 3 species that only exist in Portugal and 15 species that only exist in the Iberian Peninsula. Laurel Forest Laurel Forest is a type of subtropical forest found in areas with high humidity and relatively stable mild temperatures. The forest is characterized by broadleaf tree species with evergreen glossy and elongated leaves, known as laurophyll or lauroid.

Plants from the laurel family (Lauraceae) may or may not be present, depending on the location. This kind of forest can be found in Madeira and Azores archipelagos, in Portugal. VII: Great reliefs Volcanic landscape of Pico Island It s the largest natural park on the Azores and it has twenty-two protected areas with a big biodiversity. It s the highest point in Portugal and the third volcano in the Atlantic Ocean. This island has got many species. Second largest island of the Azores archipelago, Pico Island offers tourists a fascinating landscape made of dormant volcanoes, craters, lava and cones transformed into lakes that surround the highest mountain peak in Portugal: Ponta

do Pico. Due to its geographical characteristics, Pico Island is the ideal place for hiking, climbing, path walking and, of course, for swimming and enjoying the occasional sand beaches that may appear. Glacial valley of Zezere - We can see the place of the old glacier; it is located near Manteigas village. The thickness of the ice glacier reached about 300m in the valley, which can be confirmed by the existence of moraines in Laguna Seca. Nave de Santo António side moraines are also spectacular, downstream, on the left bank of the Zezere River, down the valley of Candieira. Many years ago this place was a glacier and now we can see its place, because the glacier melted and left an empty space. Arrábida Natural Park (Portuguese: Parque Natural da Arrábida) is a natural park located on the northern shore of the Sado River estuary in Portugal. Established in 1976 and covering 108 square kilometres (42 sq mi), it is one of the 30 areas which are officially under protection in the country. The park covers the Arrábida hills, and it has Mediterranean-like vegetation and a microclimate that resembles Adriatic locations, such as Dalmatia. The highest point in the park is Serra da Arrábida, at an elevation of 499 metres (1,637 ft). Two beaches in this park - Portinho da Arrábida and Figueirinha - are popular among the inhabitants of Lisbon and Setúbal. Overlooking the two beaches is Arrábida Convent, which was founded in the 16th century and today is managed by the Fundação Oriente. Portinho da

Arrábida beach is famous for being a regular feature on Portuguese TV commercials. Although, in 2004, a major fire destroyed a significant area of the park, it preserves the most significant ancient Mediterranean forest: the main sorts of trees are oak, Holm oak, arbutus, laurel and wild olive. In the park, we can see many structures related with water: aqueducts, depots and common washingplaces. The most famous wine of the region is Moscatel from Setúbal. The windmills are frequent in the park.
