Banff Banff National Park, Canada's oldest and the world's third oldest national park, was established with the discovery of hot mineral springs by three construction workers in 1883 at the base of Sulphur Mountain. The name Banff comes from the county of Banffshire in Scotland, the birth place of two major financiers of the Canadian Pacific Railway (CPR). Banff Springs Hotel, a marquee attraction in the Canadian Rockies, was built by the CPR as a way to promote travel and tourism to the Canadian Rockies. Eager to experience Western Canada s wilderness and stunning beauty, politicians, celebrities, and wealthy travelers made their way to Banff by train and stayed at the opulent Banff Springs Hotel, making it the major tourist center in the Canadian Rockies. Today, Banff is a bustling and charming town, home to some 8,700 yearround residents. It is the hub of one of the world s most spectacular networks of scenic mountain roads. During 1882, Tom Wilson, a packer and surveyor for the Canadian Pacific Railway (CPR), was the first known European to discover, known for many years by local Stoney natives as the lake of the little fishes. Wilson recalled, For some time we sat and smoked and gazed at the gem of beauty beneath the glacier". was officially named in 1884 in honor of Princess Louise Caroline Alberta, daughter of Queen Victoria. is best known for its stunning aquamarine water, majestically nestled at the base of the breathtaking Victoria Glacier. In 1890, the first shelters were built on the lakeshore by the CPR. These marginal accommodations eventually evolved into the Chateau Lake Louise, now a world-renowned luxury hotel. The ultra-modern ski resort at originated in 1939 as a basic chalet at the base of Mount Whitehorn, and later expanded after the construction of the Ski Lodge. Fitzhugh, the site on which now sits, was founded in 1811 by William Henry for the North West Company as the earliest fur trading outpost and supply depot in the Canadian Rockies. For most of the 19th century, and the surrounding areas were sparsely populated, inhabited only by nomadic bands of First Nations. The center was used mainly as a rest and supply stop by fur traders, missionaries, explorers, and gold-seekers on their way to and from Yellowhead Pass. Renamed as in 1911, the site gained its first permanent residents when it became a crude railway construction camp from which the outfitting business flourished. Wilderness guides began taking wealthy adventure seekers on horseback rides to remote areas, such as Maligne Lake, and the Columbia Icefield, where tourists experienced the untouched beauty of the back country, eating around campfires and living in tent camps. Victoria Long before the European explorers Captain Cook and Captain made their voyages to Island, the area which is now Victoria was home to many First Nations people. To this day, their rich and vibrant culture continues to lend flavor to the local community. Victoria was established in 1843 by the Hudson's Bay Company as a furtrading post. Many of the city s beautiful historic buildings date back to those early years. Downtown Bastion Square marks the site of the original Fort Victoria and is now a popular pedestrian-only area highlighted by the Maritime Museum of BC, as well as charming shops and restaurants tucked into restored historic buildings. During the Gold Rush of the late 1800's, Victoria grew and prospered as thousands of fortune-seekers streamed through the city en-route to the gold fields of the Fraser Valley and the Klondike. The Market Square area bustled as shops, saloons, and hotels were built to meet the demands of the growing population. Colourful Chinatown was also established during this time and is now the oldest in Canada. Victoria's reputation as "the City of Gardens" is well-deserved, with its Tudor-style homes and gardens. Oak Bay is considered the most "British" neighborhood in Canada. The majestic Legislative Buildings and the Empress Hotel on the Inner Harbor are two of the most recognizable historic landmarks on the West Coast. POINTS OF INTEREST NEAR VICTORIA: Butchart Gardens - 30 minute drive to fifty-five acres of wonderful floral displays. Royal BC Museum - The natural and human history of British Columbia is presented through three different galleries: Natural History, First Peoples, and Modern History. Craigdarroch Castle - A beautiful historic Victorian-era mansion built in the 1890s by wealthy BC coal baron Robert Dunsmuir. The Empress Hotel - This quasi-medieval architecture was built in 1908 by the Canadian Pacific Railway, providing a touch of "history" and a lot of luxury. Kamloops Kamloops is the second largest city in the Interior. With sun-drenched grasslands, cattle ranches, dry sagebrush, and mountain vistas, it marks the heartland of British Columbia. The thriving cosmopolitan community features an abundance of entertainment and artistic expression, as well as sporting challenges and shopping, offering visitors a multi-faceted vacation. From pampered resort-style luxury to real saddleback excitement, you will have the time of your life at a Kamloops country guest ranch. Relax with a massage after a day's ride, or listen to tales around a campfire. There are over 200 lakes within an hour's drive from Kamloops, which make for great kayaking expeditions. The BC Wildlife Park - Experience includes a showcase of 70 local and endangered species including grizzly bears, timber wolves, cougars, and mountain goats. Kelowna The city of Kelowna was incorporated in 1905, thirteen years after it had been surveyed and named by Leon Lequime. "Kelowna" means "Grizzly Bear" in the language of the Interior Salish, a local First Nations people. Kelowna expanded rapidly during the First World War and into the 1920s and 1930s. It evolved from ranching and grain growing to orcharding. A new rail system connected Kelowna to the Canadian Pacific Railway (CPR) mainline, and in the 1930s new tree fruit marketing systems were put in place. Together, these developments help secure Kelowna's place as the "The Orchard City" of British Columbia. A city of approximately 107,000 people, Kelowna is nestled on Okanagan Lake and surrounded by orchards and vineyards. Visitors can take in winery, golf, or just bask in the sunshine on one of the sandy beaches. Spectacular scenery, pristine lakes, and blossom-dusted hillsides have established the city's reputation as the perfect "base camp" for Okanagan explorations. A visit to Kelowna's renowned wineries offer a taste of the "Old World". Cellars are lined with oak casks, while patios overlook sleepy vineyards. Each year, the famous Fall Wine Festival attracts visitors from around the world who wish to sample exquisite wine and food pairings. POINTS OF INTEREST NEAR KELOWNA: BC Orchard Industry Museum - offers reflective and interactive interpretations of the local orchard industry - past and present. The Wine Museum - Artifacts and exhibits chronicle the beginnings of wine making globally and explore the history of the local wine industry Vernon - 46 km North of Kelowna. Popular for outdoor activities such as biking and boating. Penticton - 78 km South of Kelowna between Okanagan Lake to the north and Skaha Lake to the South. Okanagan Lake - home of the Ogopogo, the mysterious Lake Monster, this is the largest lake in the region and is located close to the centre of the Okanagan Valley. Numerous access spots along Highway 97 lead to beautiful sandy beaches, resorts, and campsites. Whistler The area of Whistler was initially inhabited by Coast Salish First Nations, who embraced the region s plentiful resources and wildlife long before European settlers arrived. In 1914, a fishing lodge was established which inspired the creation of several more, marking the beginnings of Whistler s transformation into a first class resort. In 1965, the development of a ski area on Whistler Mountain began, and by 1978 construction of Whistler Village was underway. Only a 2 hour drive north of, Whistler draws about 2.1 million visitors every year. Host of the 2010 Winter Olympic games, Whistler is well known for its spectacular hiking and activities. Wildlife of many kinds can be seen in their natural habitat, such as bears, eagles, fish, and marmots, which gave Whistler its name due to their loud whistling noise. POINTS OF INTEREST NEAR WHISTLER: Shannon Falls - The third-highest waterfall in British Columbia. Brackendale Eagle Sanctuary - The winter home of the Bald eagle. Old-growth forests - Walk amongst 1000-year-old Cedar trees, where a naturalist guide will introduce you to the unique forest ecology.
