For over 160 years, the Y has been committed to preparing our children for the future, and we are as determined as ever to continue along that path. I cannot tell you how many children come through the doors of the Y, for either childcare or summer camp, and improve academically and socially as a direct result of their Y experience. We take great pride in nurturing the future of our children through programs that reinforce and extend opportunities to learn. The Y s summer camps are structured to prevent childhood summer learning loss, which many children experience following the end of an academic school year. Our camp programs promote STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Math), physical activity and are a place where children can be creative: they learn while having fun in the Y s structured camp environment. Y camps foster a child s mind, body and spirit in accordance with the Y s fundamental mission and responsibilities to the communities we serve. Our counselors are thoroughly screened, trained in CPR/First Aid, emergency preparedness and other safety measures. Beyond that, our counselors are prepared to give your child an enriched learning experience that they will not only enjoy, but also benefit from for the rest of their lives, both academically and socially. Whether it is the fun of singing camp songs, swimming, taking nature walks, participating in various sports, or the intellectual challenges of our STEAM-focused programs, the Y s counselors guide our campers in developing new interests, friends, and independence. As one of the Washington area s leading nonprofits with a focus on youth development, the Y knows the importance of nurturing every child so that they can meet their fullest potential. Our summer camp programs are designed with this idea in mind to make sure that the children we serve are prepared to succeed for years to come. Give your child a positive adventure and lasting education this summer by enrolling them in Y summer camps. It will be a healthy, fun and supportive learning experience from which they will not only benefit in several ways, but also want to return to again and again. Best, Angie L. IMPORTANT INFORMATION IMPORTANT INFORMATION FOR MORE INFORMATION Refer to the Parent Handbook, Call the YMCA branch or visit www.ymcadc.org for more information about the following: Financial Assistance Accommodations for special needs children What should my camper bring to Camp? FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS ABOUT SUMMER CAMP I completed my camp registration online. Is my registration complete? No. Please complete the registration forms located on our website. Your registration is not complete until these forms are completed, filled in and returned to the Y. You can email them to arlingtonemail@ymcadc.org or mail them to the following address: YMCA Arlington Attn: Camp Forms 3422 N. 13th Street Arlington, VA 22201 What time do I pick-up and drop-off my camper if they do not participate in Extended Hours? Please drop your camper off between 8:45am 9:00am and pick them up between 4:00pm 4:15pm. Travel and Outdoor campers should be picked up between 4:30pm-4:45pm. What are the activities for before and after-care? Campers will be split up and provided different low key, age appropriate activities. Part of the time in after care is spent on activities that combat summer learning loss. What information will I get before camp? In addition to the parent handbook, a precamp email is our courtesy communication tool to inform you of the week s schedule of activities as well as answer any questions you may have. If you sign up for a camp Thursday- Sunday the week before camp, you will not get a pre-camp e-mail, however, please feel free to contact us with questions. If you do not receive a pre-camp email, please confirm your email address with the Member Services desk. How can I get a camp schedule? Camp schedules are available at the sign in/ sign out desk, from camp staff and at the Member Services desk one (1) week prior to the beginning of camp. The camp schedule provides you with information on what your child will be doing during his/her time at camp. Please note that these schedules are subject to change. We do our best to provide you with information early so you can plan ahead, but summer camp is full of surprises, and we are often forced to make changes. This schedule also gives you information on what to bring. What should my camper bring to camp? All campers must bring a healthy, nut-free lunch, plenty to drink and two snacks to camp daily. Please send only non-perishable foods because refrigeration is not possible. Campers should also bring their own water bottle to stay hydrated during the day. Send your child to camp with a backpack to keep all of the belongings together. Swimsuit and towel. A hat for sun protection. *See checklist on page 3. What to bring for travel camp? Please label all items with name and phone number. Campers must bring a healthy, nut-free lunch, 2 snacks and plenty to drink each day. Campers should not need, nor should they bring large sums of money. Trips are subject to change, so campers should bring a backpack with swimsuit, towel and sunscreen each day, regardless of the schedule. All campers should wear comfortable and appropriate attire, such as T-shirts, shorts and tennis shoes. Please do not wear sandals or flip flops. Should I pack water for my child? Yes. Though we fill coolers for the kids and our staff make regular trips to the restrooms and drinking fountains, parents are ultimately responsible for sending their child with plenty of fluids for the day. What should my campers wear to camp? Children should wear clothing suitable for an active day at camp. Appropriate items would include shorts, t-shirts, light jackets (for chilly mornings), and athletic shoes (no sandals). Please label all items sent to camp with the child s first and last name. Our camps use discovery and play as a major part of our camp program, thus we encourage you to dress your child in clothing that you do not mind getting dirty or stained with art materials in the course of your child engaging in a fun activity. Is there a dress code for CITs? Counselors-in-Training and Junior lifeguards should dress just like the staff, wearing black or khaki shorts or pants and CIT shirt each day. While swimming, girl CITs should wear a modest one-piece suit and boys should wear shorts-style suits. Sneakers should be worn daily. When will my camper swim? All Aquatics campers will swim daily. It is our goal for all other campers to swim at least once in a week, but this is not always possible. Schedules will be sent 2-4 days prior to the beginning of camp and will be available on the first day. This does not include the Gymnastics Camp that will not be swimming during their camp day. Should my campers bring money to camp? No. Camp fees include all day trip admission fees. The only exception is on extended trips where campers may want to purchase souvenirs, designated Pizza Fridays, or special camp carnivals. What if my camper loses something at camp? We know that sometimes things just get lost. Please label all of your child s belongings. The best way to prevent the loss of property is to leave it at home! There will be a designated Lost and Found at each camp location. Please check for your child s items before the end of the week. Lost and found items are kept at the YMCA for one week after camp and then disposed or donated to charity. The YMCA is not responsible for camper possessions that are lost or stolen. What happens if my child is late for Travel/Outdoor Camp? Unfortunately, we cannot hold the bus for a camper who is running late. We will accept them into a camp at the branch or offsite location that piques their interest. You may also drop off you camper at their field trip destination. What happens when my child needs to be picked up early? No problem! Please contact the Y prior to pick up to ensure that your child is ready. I am running late. What should I do? Please contact the Y as soon as you know you or your authorized pick-up person will be late. We do charge $1 per minute you are late after the designated pick-up time. 4 SUMMER CAMP 2018 YMCA of Metropolitan Washington 1.800.473.YMCA ymcadc.org 703.525.5420 YMCA ARLINGTON 5

During your first evening, you will attend the Activities Fair. Here, you will choose the activities that will become your morning schedule for the rest of the week. MEALS Have you seen anyone join The Order of the Oar? Have you ever eaten hands free cake on Super Hero Monday? Or nearly forgotten to eat* because lunch time suddenly became an impromptu dance party? It s almost impossible to describe the noise and fun of meal times. Three times a day, your cabin will shout and sing as you try to outperform your rival cabins, all of whom are competing for extra points towards the Crew Cup, all while eating food that seems too good to be camp food. Many meals have themes so make sure you pack something pink, a pair of knee high socks, and a tie-dye t-shirt. *Don t worry, our staff will make sure you don t forget to eat! 32 SUMMER CAMP 2018 YMCA of Metropolitan Washington 1.800.473.YMCA ymcadc.org 703.838.8085 703.525.5420 YMCA ARLINGTON 33

It might be jewelry making in arts and crafts, kayaking on the river, building shelters in the woods or exploring Monster Island. The afternoon s activities at Camp are designed to be fun and recreational, and an opportunity to get to know your bunk mates. CAMP LETTS CAMPS ALSO INCLUDE: Equestrian Sailing Canoeing and Kayaking Water Skiing Zip Line Paintball Archery High Adventures And much more! EVENING ACTIVITY When the sun starts to set, Camp comes alive. We hold a camp-wide activity or game each night, which ties in to the weekly theme. It also uses as many parts of camp as we can, so you really get a chance to explore. Evening games help your crew earn points towards the Crew Cup.
