Canberra Chapter Newsletter November 2010 Coordinating Committee Richard Calver, 6231 5195, tfmuch@bigpond.com Brian Lockwood, 6285 4633, brianlockwood@grapevine.com.au John Phillips, 6286 9731 Magnificent wins at Sydney Concours! VSCCA takes out the top prizes Canberra readers will be delighted to hear that some of the club s members took out the top awards at the recent Concours D Elegance Australia held in Sydney on 10 October. Against a field of some 200 classic cars and motorbikes, Jorge Fernandes won the prestigious Best of Show trophy with his magnificent 1927 Hispano-Suiza H6B convertible, a car which also took the first class award in the vintage category. Not only that, Jorge gained the premier award in the prewar Rolls-Royce category too, with his 1937 Phantom III. Jorge s wife Monica gained the Chairman s Choice Garneau Award with her 1930 Bugatti T46 Coupé. Fred Heming took out the people s choice with his Anzani Bugatti Type 35 GP replica, while Barry Farr took the award in the 100 Years of Alfa Romeo category with his superb 1958 Giuletta Spider, a car which also landed him the Elegance Award in the Alfa Romeo class. Syd Reinhardt took out the Elegance award in the Bentley category with his 1929 Speed Six Le Mans Replica, and Mike Downey took out the Jaguar Elegance Award with his 1949 XK120. How about that! What a terrific showing for the VSCCA. So, a hearty well done to all the club s participants, awarded or otherwise, for a sterling presentation in the face of stiff competition, resulting in a wonderful PR dividend for the club as a whole. Marques in the Park Marques in the Park will be held on Sunday 21 November, not on the Patrick White lawns behind the National Library as everyone had been expecting, but back at Belconnen in the John Knight Memorial Park as in previous years. And no wonder they re expecting 1000 cars this time! We won t be displaying as a club but looking is still free. Thanksgiving weekend Syd Reinhardt s Thanksgiving weekend, based around Braidwood s airing of the quilts, is now fully booked. Cars will leave Sydney on Friday 26 November and head home on Sunday 28 November. The events on the Saturday, however, remain an opportunity for Canberra members to spend time mixing and mingling with their Sydney colleagues by joining the display in the town centre with an appropriate car. If you are not booked in for the full event program with Syd, and you plan on attending just the Saturday daytime functions, you need to inform Richard Calver now so that you and your car can be accommodated. There is a fee of $17 payable per person in advance and this gets you into the various events, plus a sandwich lunch (see The Vintage Car for details). You need to show up at Duncan Street in the centre of Braidwood at around 9 a.m. to join the static display, or park elsewhere if travelling in a modern. Confirmations should be with Richard by 10 November. Payments can be made directly into the Canberra chapter account which is BSB 062914, account 10717349.

November calendar 21 November Marques in the Park 27 November Run to Braidwood 28 November Breakfast at Delissios In the works Tewibbly Bwiddish Day, organized by the Jagwar Drivers Club, will be held on Sunday 5 December on the lawns behind the National Library. We will not be displaying as a club but the event is a great drawcard for all devotees of Briddish cars, so pop along and have a look. Our closing event for the year will be lunch at Springers Rest at Murrumbateman on Sunday 12 December. Costs are $42 a head and pre-payment into the club bank account is required by 30 November (BSB 062914, account 10717349). Alternatively, hand over the cash or a cheque made payable to Richard Calver. Canberra Driving Tests The Committee has approved our plan to host a Driving Tests event on 13 March 2011 at the Sutton Road Driver Training Complex. Because the track needs to be booked months in advance, we are seeking expressions of interest NOW. If you would like to attend, get in touch with one of our Canberra committee. There s no obligation to follow through but, the more expressions of support we receive, the better the chances of it going ahead. We need confirmations by the end of December in order to make a decision in early January. Lakeside Thursdays Thursdays are for catching up with your clubmates down by the lake over lunch. With the weather turning warm again, it can only get better so bring your folding chair and sandwiches to Yarralumla Bay. In case of rain, and there has been a bit of it lately, we ll be at the alternate venue of the Turner Bowling Club in McCaughey St. from 1130 til whenever. UBD map 58, ref M10. bucket hats are available at $25 each, post included, in M, L and XL. To order, leave your details with John Phillips. Payment will be requested once the minimum order numbers are reached. These items are not stocked and have to be made, hence the need for minimum orders. Regalia badges Richard Calver is holding a small supply of the VSCCA metal grille badges and cloth patches. The enamel badges will make a great addition to your badge bar while the patches will dress up any casual shirt or spray jacket. Costs are $60 and $6 respectively. Personal name badges The Canberra Trophy Centre, 12 Molonglo Mall, Fyshwick, makes the proper name badges for members. The order code is T-VSCCA-NB and you can have badges in magnetic form for $11.55 or with a pin for $8.80. You can order by phone and have it posted for a little extra, or collect direct from the store. Their number is 6280 6520. Members cars John Grant has taken over the maintenance of the club web site and asks that all members submit photos of their cars, together with a brief technical description. Money matters The Vegemite jar continues to give good service in attracting donations to support our activities and we now have a handy $705 in the kitty. Welcome to our latest members Our newest friends are Ross and Lorima Reid, owners of the striking 2-door Falcon XM hardtop pictured here. With the help of the club, Ross has put the car on historic plates and we look forward to seeing more of it at future events. Welcome to the club, Ross and Lorima! Breakfast at Delissios The club breakfast at Delissios in Curtin is held on the last Sunday in the month, 0830 for 0900. The price is $15 so have the exact money ready as you go in. Pull the wool, tip the bucket New club regalia is available from Sydney with a minimum order of six items. The all-wool navy pullovers are available in sizes 14 = S, 16 = M, 18 = L, 20 = XL, 22 = XXL, 24 = 3XL, 26 = 4XL and 28 = 5XL. These are $85 each including postage to Canberra. Matching navy

2010 Points Score The 2010 points tally has closed with the final run being the breakfast at Delissios last week. The way we worked out the tally this year was to award 1 point for attendance at the weekly lakeside lunch, 2 points for the monthly breakfast and 3 points for attending the specially organized runs. In each case, you got double points for showing up in a 30 year old car. There were 39 scheduled lake runs during the year (2 of which were canceled due to rain before we came up with our wet weather venue), 10 breakfasts and 9 special runs. You could have had 168 points if you went along to everything in a proper form of transport. John Phillips has emerged as the clear winner this year with a total score of 137. Even discounting the points awarded for lake runs, he still comes out on top, so it has been a significant showing from one of our oldest members. However, the actual score is less important than the fact that John managed to attend more events in both historic and non-historic cars than any of us. In recognition, we are going to award him a pot at the Christmas function, so make sure you come along and be part of the wind-up. As with any club, we ve had members come and go during the year, but the final tallies for all who attended Canberra Chapter events during 2010 are given below, for once without salutations. John Phillips 137 Richard Calver 131 Graham Moore 62 Geoff Venn 60 David Pearse 59 Andrew Riley 59 Peter Makeham 58 Brian Oxley 58 John Higham 54 Brian Lockwood 51 Geoff Nickols 51 Ian Phillips 46 John Clarke 39 Ian Kenny 37 Peter Dechaineux 36 Bryan Purcell 33 Rob Baker 32 John Prentice 26 Ray Gulson 22 Arne Schimmelfeder 22 Phill Coltman 16 Peter Hoskin 15 Chris Edwards 15 Paul Gugger 13 Jim Kennedy 12 David Venn 10 Col Dennett 9 Tim Friend 9 Ian Irwin 9 Wayne Smith 8 David Clarke 8 Chris Forsey 6 Alistair Kinloch 6 Helen Brown 6 Rod Warriner 6 Bev Bates 5 Alan Baker 5 Jim MacArthur 4 Roy Edgar 3 Brian Johnston 3 Murray McDonogh 3 Peter Jones 3 Doug Ward 2 Warwick & Vic Nicholson 2 Don Lewis 1 Ross Reid 1
