The rich Heritage of Southern Italy & the Dalmatian Coast Aboard the Le Lyrial April 28 May 6, 2016

Dear Chrysler Museum Member, For thousands of years, wave after wave of civilizations have passed over the Mediterranean, leaving their mark on art, architecture, culture, and history. In fact, much of Italy, Croatia, and Montenegro, which we will explore on this beautiful cruise, can be considered a veritable museum, where cities and small towns house magnificent works of art not only in museums, but also around every corner in palaces, churches, cathedrals, houses, and municipal buildings which can also be considered art treasures in their own right. And while layers of civilizations confront us at every turn of this voyage, what is especially noticeable is the incredible beauty of the well-preserved medieval towns we will explore. In Ravello, home to medieval art and glorious gardens perched on a 350-foot cliff with panoramic views of the Amalfi coast. In Otranto, our gateway to the great architecture of Lecce, a jewel of a town dubbed the Florence of the South. In the UNESCO World Heritage site of the walled town of Kotor. Above all, in Dubrovnik the one-time Republic of Ragusa and worthy rival of Venice. In each of these towns we will discover castles and cathedrals, fortresses and great walls built by Normans or Aragonese, Byzantines, Venetians, or Ottomans, and we will learn from Professor Larry Wolff Silver Professor of History at New York University, and Director of the NYU Center for European and Mediterranean Studies about the ebb and flow and intermingling of these cultures as we walk among the monuments they have left behind. Your home for this voyage will be the elegant new Le Lyrial. At once large enough to offer all the amenities for a comfortable and enjoyable voyage, it is small enough to navigate seaways and enter harbors that are inaccessible to today s mega-cruise ships. The combination of a wonderful itinerary, a delightful season, a beautiful ship, and the companionship of fellow Chrysler Museum of Art members and friends guarantees an unforgettable cruise. Don t miss this opportunity to discover some of the Mediterranean s most enchanting artistic and cultural treasures. We look forward to welcoming you aboard. Sincerely, Kerry Martinolich Donor Stewardship Manager

guest lecturer Larry Wolff is the Silver Professor of History at New York University, and Director of the NYU Center for European and Mediterranean Studies. He received his Ph.D. from Stanford University. Professor Wolff s teaching and research range widely across the Mediterranean world, but he has always had a special interest in Eastern Europe and the Balkans. His books Inventing Eastern Europe: The Map of Civilization on the Mind of the Enlightenment (1994) and Venice and the Slavs: The Discovery of Dalmatia in the Age of Enlightenment (2001) are widely respected accounts of European perspectives of the East in the modern period. His most recent book is Paolina s Innocence: Child Abuse in Casanova s Venice (2012). Professor Wolff has received Fulbright, American Council of Learned Societies, and Guggenheim fellowships, and he is a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences.

THE PONANT SHIPs The only ships in their class certified as Clean Ships Care for the Environment Our concern for the health and well-being of the planet is demonstrated by our active involvement in organizations dedicated to the promotion of ecologically responsible tourism and to the sharing of best practices. We are a proud member of the International Association of Antarctica Tour Operators and a signatory of La Charte Bleue d Armateurs de France, both of which bind us to follow the most stringent rules and regulations governing safety and environmental protection. CLEAN SHIPS Above and beyond participation in these organizations, we have taken the additional step of having all four of our sister ships certified Clean Ship by the French classification society, Bureau Veritas, one of the world s major ship classification societies. This coveted and seldom-awarded certification recognizes that the PONANT fleet from initial design and construction to seagoing operations has adopted the most environmentally responsible materials, equipment, and management procedures possible.

Le Lyrial You will travel aboard the deluxe, five-star Le Lyrial, one of the most beautifully conceived and technologically sophisticated small ships afloat. Safety, Comfort & Convenience Le Lyrial is equipped with the latest communication, navigational, and safety equipment and meets or exceeds USPHS and U.S. Coast Guard rules. It is also outfitted with a technologically advanced stabilizing system to minimize the effects of rough conditions at sea. Three passenger elevators serve all six decks. And public amenities include an outdoor heated pool, lounges, two restaurants, a theater/lecture hall, a well-stocked library, and a full-service salon, steam, spa, and fitness center. Cuisine The quality of food, its preparation, and the social experience of a meal are the objects of special care aboard ship. Whether you are enjoying breakfast among friends, a sun-kissed lunch on one of the outside decks, or a delightful dinner in the elegant surroundings of the restaurants, the talented chefs showcase their expertise by bringing out the very best in local flavors. PONANT was selected as an Outstanding Culinary Cruise Line by Saveur magazine in 2014. Respect for the Environment The health of our planet, and especially its oceans, is a critical concern for us. We have taken care to certify all of our sister ships as Clean Ships, employing the most eco-friendly technology available today. As environmentally responsible ship operators, we not only comply with existing regulations; we anticipate new ones. We continually seek to share industry best practices on matters ranging from increasing energy efficiency and reducing greenhouse gas emissions to waste treatment and recycling.
