Its history is closely intertwined with that of Genoa, up to the fall of the Ligurian Republic. The town of La Spezia has undergone an extraordinary development since the second half of the 19th century, when the building of the great Naval Arsenal radically changed its destiny and appearance. La Spezia represents the ideal place to start discovering this wonderful part of Italy. The enchanting panorama and the mild climate of the Gulf of La Spezia, with Lerici and Portovenere at its farthest ends, and its
charming Riviera have captivated many poets and writers. Byron, Shelley, and Goethe were among them, and for this reason the Gulf is also known as the Gulf of the Poets. The province of La Spezia covers the Ligurian coastal region called Cinque Terre, five tiny villages in a man made landscape between sky and sea, which is part of the UNESCO world heritage and today also National Park and Marine Protected Area. Luni, an antique Roman village, and the historical town of Sarzana, famous for its forts dating from the middle ages and antique shops, are only eight kilometres away. The mediaeval castles and villages of Lunigiana, the Tuscan wonders of Carrara, Pisa, Lucca and Portofino are few kilometres away. La Spezia is 30 minutes by bus from Lerici (either L or S routes to Fossitermi depart every 15 minutes).
Transport By air The closest airport to La Spezia and Lerici is Pisa, Galileo Galilei Airport, which is 90 Kilometres away. Pisa Airport is connected to Milan and Rome by regular domestic flights. Genoa, Cristoforo Colombo Airport is 120 Kilometres away and Florence is 170 Kilometres away. Most transatlantic flights usually land in Milan Malpensa (250 Km) or Rome Fiumicino (450 Km). By rail For specific information, check the official Italian Railway website: http://www.trenitalia.com. Make sure to validate your ticket at a platform machine BEFORE boarding your train. Note that Lerici is not linked directly by train; the nearest railway stations are in La Spezia and Sarzana (both about 10 Kilometres away from Lerici). Florence Airport Trains - Take a shuttle bus to the main train station (Florence Santa Maria Novella), where there are frequent trains to La Spezia. The train ride is 1.5 to 2.5 hours. Genoa Airport Trains - Take a shuttle bus to the train station (Genova Principe), where there are frequent trains to La Spezia. The train ride is 1.5 to 2.5 hours. Milan Airports Trains There are three airports; Malpensa, Linate, Bergamo. Take a shuttle bus or train to Milan Central Station (Milano Centrale), where there are frequent trains to La Spezia. Shuttles from each airport are very frequent (every 30 minutes) and take about 30 minutes. The train to La Spezia takes is frequent and takes three (3) hours. Pisa Airport Trains - Pisa is a smaller airport but many European low budget airlines use it and it is the closest airport to La Spezia. To train travel from Pisa to La Spezia is convenient. Please check https://www.trainline.eu/train-times/pisa-centrale-to-la-spezia-centrale for train times and ticket prices. By Public Transportation or by taxi The bus from La Spezia railway station runs in direction Sarzana Ospedale (S route), or the bus direction Lerici (L route), every 15 minutes during the day. It takes about 45 minutes to get to Lerici. Bus tickets for zone 3 (around 2.50 ) can be purchased at the Tabacchi newsagent inside the railway station, or on the bus (more expensive). The bus website is located at: http://www.atcesercizio.it/index.php?lang=en The taxi ride from La Spezia central railway station, or from Sarzana railway station, to Lerici takes about 20 minutes and costs 30+ Euros. Tipping is not included and is discretional. By car Rental cars are available at all airports. La Spezia can be easily reached by motorway called Autostrade. You will have to pay the toll as you exit the motorway. Major credit cards are
accepted, however cash will always come in handy. We recommend you exit the Autostrade at Sarzana (not La Spezia), and follow the road signs to Lerici. More info from http://www.cmre.nato.int/index.php/about-cmre/visitor-information
