The following is a summary of information relevant to the Northern Territory tourism industry including visitation results from Tourism Research Australia s International Visitor Survey, overseas and arrivals information from the Department of Immigration and Border Protection and airport traffic data from the Bureau of Infrastructure, Transport and Regional Economics. This report was been prepared by the Strategic Research team in September 217. Estimates in this report are based on survey data and therefore affected by sampling variation. The table below summarises the sample and Confidence Intervals (CI) for the Northern Territory. Summary of the International Market for the Northern Territory Total international visitation to the Northern Territory (NT) for year ending (YE) June 217 grew 8.2% on the previous year, to 32, with increases in visitors coming to holiday, visit friends and relatives or for business. International travel for education and employment declined, albeit off a low base. Key results: The NT received 32 international travellers for all purposes of travel (up +8.2%), spending $485 million (up +16%) and staying approximately 3.9 million visitor nights (up +2.9%). While fewer international visitors came to the NT for employment (down -29% to 12 ) and education (down -13% to 2 ), more international visitors visited the NT for a holiday (up +8.6% to 259 ), visiting friends or relatives (up +22% to 2 ) and business (up +51% to 13 ). The number of international visitors to Australia increased by +8.7%, with New South Wales, Western Australia, Tasmania and the ACT the strongest contributors to this growth. The NT growth rate was lower than the national average, so the Territory's visitor market share dropped by -.2 percentage points to 3.84% for YE June 217. The NT received 259 international holiday travellers (up +8.6%), spending $363 million (up +18%) and staying approximately 2. million visitor nights (up +9.9%). The key performing holiday markets for the NT for YE June 217 were Germany up +14% or an extra 4 holiday visitors, Greater China up +81% or an extra 7 visitors, and Scandinavia up +36% or an extra 2 visitors. New Zealand was also a strong performer increasing by +53% or an extra 4 2 visitors, Canada (up by +21% or an extra 1 5 visitors) and the United States of America (up +3.1% or an extra 1,3 visitors). Holiday markets to the NT which did not perform well year on year included the United Kingdom (-2.3%), Japan (-4.5%), France (-28%) and Italy (-1.7%). The greatest bulk of the growth in international visitor numbers for this reporting period was in the Top End (up 11%). Visitation to Central Australia increased more moderately (5.8%).
