Galápagos November 13-22, 2015 Aboard National Geographic Endeavour

It s hard to comprehend until you experience it for yourself being eye-to-eye with waved albatross and Nazca boobies soaring along a cliff, sharing a moment with Sally Lightfoot crabs that don t run away, encountering blue-footed boobies nesting along the trail, and Galápagos sea lions calmly lounging on a white-sand beach. Ralph Lee Hopkins, National Geographic photographer 1

Dear Members and Friends, Galápagos is a life-list must. It is legendary for its unique wildlife that has never developed an instinctive flight response to humans, making for incredible up-close encounters and photos. The experience we offer in Galápagos is different. It is deeper, more immersive, and more holistic. We go aboard a genuine expedition ship with a team of top naturalists, an undersea specialist, and a photo instructor who share more of the wild wonders. Each day you ll explore a new island, getting close to the rare endemic wildlife. And nearly every day, you ll have the opportunity to discover the undersea by snorkeling at sites that teem with fish, sea lions, or sea turtles and all your snorkeling gear is provided so there s no need to tote your own. We ll go with a host of tools that let us explore deeper: video microscopes to see what makes the seas so rich, a Remotely Operated Vehicle (ROV) that dives deep to show us the benthic world far beyond the range of even scuba divers. We have kayaks for peaceful paddling outings in sunken calderas and calm coves, and a fleet of Zodiacs to venture to wild shorelines and secluded beaches. You will enjoy a great degree of choice in your exploration: join the Zodiac cruise with the birders or the photographers; take long walks or short ones; explore in a kayak or through your viewfinder; indulge in active days or skip an afternoon hike to unwind with a massage. There is no place else on Earth like Galápagos I hope you ll join us to explore the wonders of these islands. Plus we invite you on our optional extension to Peru, November 6-13, 2015, exploring the archaeological and cultural wonders in Machu Picchu, Cusco, and Lima. To make your reservation, please return the enclosed reservation form or call 800-252-4910. Sincerely, Margaret M. Betchart President, Betchart Expeditions, Inc., For AAAS Travels, ACS and Sigma Xi Expeditions Cover: Sea turtle swimming under water Jeff Litton. Opposite: Nazca booby in flight Ralph Lee Hopkins. It s Different in Galápagos A little world within itself, Darwin called it, an archipelago like no other on Earth, with strange, wonderful, endemic creatures. The encounters with wild animals that happen in Galápagos don t happen anywhere else on Earth, because there is simply no fear here. This is a marvelous thing to experience, this transfigured relationship with animals. And the magic works whether you are 8 or 80. Galápagos land iguana. Encounter blue-footed boobies nesting along a trail. Come eye-to-eye with the famous giant tortoises roaming in the wild. Marvel at courting, red-throated frigatebirds soaring overhead. Watch your footing to avoid disturbing a sea lion lounging on a white-sand beach. And swim with penguins, marine iguanas, and playful sea lions experiences that can transform lives. Experience the Undersea Differently The world beneath the sea in Galápagos is as spectacular and diverse as the world you ll find above. You ll see shimmering fish, sea turtles, sea lions, even a penguin or two. You ll have opportunities to snorkel nearly every day, and we ll provide you with a wetsuit, mask, snorkel, and fins. Or if certified, you can arrange for special scuba diving opportunities. Prefer to stay dry yet still see the Galápagos undersea? An onboard undersea specialist will dive with a video camera so you can view it all from the lounge. Our ship also carries a glass-bottom boat, hydrophone, and Remotely Operated Vehicle (ROV) to help reveal what other travelers seldom see or hear. Opposite page (clockwise from top): Sea turtle; diverse birdlife includes magnificent frigatebirds, brown pelicans, and blue-footed boobies; expedition team lowers the ROV to help reveal the world beneath the surface; marine iguana. 4

An Expedition Team That Makes the Difference The animal life and landscapes In Galápagos vary from island to island. Explore with our dedicated expedition team who will reveal each island s unique creatures and topography, providing the richest, most in-depth experience. Our naturalists are exceptional, each handpicked for their knowledge, and trained to genuinely enhance your experience. The wide diversity of specialties marine and evolutionary biology, ornithology and more and personalities on our team means you can gravitate to the naturalists whose interests and styles most appeal to you. And our generous staff to guest ratio of 12:1 ensures that you have plenty of choices every day. Exclusive Program: Expedition Photography Accompanying your expedition is a Lindblad Expeditions-National Geographic certified photo instructor, a naturalist who has undergone special training to help you better understand your camera settings, the basics of composition, and how to capture incredible wildlife behavior. So whether you use a smartphone, a point and shoot, or a sophisticated DSLR, count on returning home with improved skills and your best shots ever. Take advantage of Galápagos unique photo ops. A Typical Day in the Enchanted Galápagos Islands One of the most important aspects of our Galápagos expedition is flexibility. Travelers have many options to indulge their interests whether they be photography, birding, the undersea, geology, the islands human history, or much more. Typically, start your day with a 7 a.m. wake-up call from your expedition leader. Then choose from an array of exploration options. Hikes and wildlife walks are offered at varying lengths and paces, ensuring there s an ideal option for everyone. Choice of Activities: You can explore in a variety of ways: Naturalist-guided hikes, slowpaced walks for photographers, Zodiac rides, snorkeling, kayaking, or simply sitting on the beach next to a group of sea lions. You will enter the world of the strange and wonderful endemic creatures of Galápagos our guests often compare the experience to stepping into the best nature documentary they ve ever seen! You ll walk among marine iguanas resting on their lava perches, frigatebirds with their robust inflated pouches, Galápagos penguins searching for food, and giant tortoises stoically roaming the highlands. Every evening, you ll gather in the lounge for an informal briefing to talk about what the group saw and did during that day. When you re not out exploring, your casual expedition ship provides inspiring spaces a cozy lounge, gracious dining room, and well-stocked library. It also offers an array of daily spa and wellness options. Our shipboard chefs use fresh, local ingredients whenever possible, including locally grown produce, sustainably caught fish, and other local products. During the week together, new friendships and a lifelong love of this enchanting place will touch everyone. Opposite page (clockwise from top): Giant tortoise remains unfazed by human presence; kayaking is a great way to explore on your own; snorkeling reaps big rewards; expert naturalists help point out the wildlife; the chef presents Spanish-inspired paella using sustainable seafood; a deserted shoreline is the perfect place to rejuvenate. 8
