9/11/15 GEOGRAPHY & RISE OF ROME I can analyze the importance of the Roman Empire. 7.1 Analyze the legacy of the Roman Empire. 1. What sea is northeast of 2. What is Italy shaped like? 3. What is the elevahon like in 4. Where is Rome located in (Northern, central, or Southern) Based on the map of the Roman Empire above, and the map of Roman roads to the leq, what predichons can your group make about the Romans? Topics to think about: government, trade, religion, language, & culture The ancient Romans said "All roads lead to Rome." In ancient Rome, that was true. Rome was considered the center of the empire and every city and province had to be connected to the center. There was even a mile marker in the center of Rome that you were supposed to use to measure distance. Every Hme a new area was conquered or a new province was created, roads were built to connect that province to Rome. Roads were built in as straight a line as possible with stone bridges and tunnels if necessary. Along the side of road, the Romans placed signs called milestones. Milestones told how far it was back to Rome, and somehmes how far to the nearest town and even who was emperor when the road was built. The Romans built thousands of miles of roads and yes, all roads did eventually lead to Rome. Roman Roads for Kids by Mr. Donn s Social Studies Website 1

9/11/15 Roman Roads Video 1. What does the word legacy mean? 2. People who are famous or powerful are oqen called legends. Name a person who you consider to be a legend and explain why. hap://www.history.com/topics/ancient- history/ancient- rome/videos/mankind- the- story- of- all- of- us- roman- roads THE LEGACY OF ROMAN WORDS Do you know that the words doctor, animal, circus and family come from the LaIn language, which was spoken by the Romans. MAIN IDEA: Rome passed on many achievements in government, law, language and the arts to future generaions. 2

Much of the world s knowledge about construcion comes from the Romans. Early Romans borrowed architectural ideas from the Greeks, but they also developed their own style. Roman designs oren included vaults, columns, domes and arches. New architectural ideas meant that buildings could be constructed in brand new ways. Because of concrete and a new design, Roman theaters did not have to be built on natural slopes to have Iered seaing early Greek theaters are only found on slopes. ROMAN THEATER Columns, domes and arches sill appear in many modern buildings. Banks, homes and government buildings oren use a Roman style. Can you think of a building with columns? GREEK THEATER 3

ROMAN IDEAS & GOVERNMENT ROMAN IDEAS & GOVERNMENT Roman ideas about law, as first wriaen in the Twelve Tables, are with us today. We, like the Romans, believe that all people are equal under the law and should be treated fairly. Roman ideas about government and ciizenship are also important today in the United States. Like early Romans, Americans believe that a republic made up of equal ciizens is the best government. ROMAN INFLUENCE ON LANGUAGE ROMAN INFLUENCE ON CULTURE Today the alphabet of the LaIn language, which expanded from 22 to 26 leaers, and is used throughout the Western World. LaIn shaped the languages of Italy, France, Spain, Portugal and Romania. When you visit Washington D.C., or the capital city of any state, you will likely see buildings with domes and arches that are directly inspired by Roman architecture. 4

ROMANS & CHRISTIANITY ROMANS & CHRISTIANITY As you probably know, ChrisIanity is one of the major religions in the world today. ChrisIanity really began in the Roman Empire. When Rome's government adopted ChrisIanity in the 300 s C.E. it helped the new religion to grow and spread. ARer Rome s fall, many Roman ideas blended with those of ChrisIanity. THE LEGACY OF ROME Review your notes. Quiz on Monday on Lesson 1. THE LEGACY OF ROME Listening Check: Which aspects of the Roman Empire are Reflected in present day cultures? Discuss with your group. Each group member needs to create a wriaen list. 5
